Interesting, I'll definitely check that out and see if it ever becomes a problem. Ironically I own the same retina and it works beautifully it was basically brand new internally (I probably should repaste it as it's likely never been repasted previously)
Do you know much about the NV41? According to techpowerup there was only "one" GPU under the NV42 number (6800 Ultra I believe) either they didn't find any others or that's the only chip. Gonna say it's as unreliable as the latter due to it basically being the architecture of "most" I'd the 6000 series. But as...

I've used my Windows 7 tower from 2016 until 2019 when the hard drive died, and then I upgraded to a Thinkpad Edge (0319-3tg) but even that's getting on with age a bit I've used It from 2019 to Now (typing on it as we speak)
However the fact I'm still using Windows 8.1 isn't good, but my New HP Probook 640 G3 should last me another 5 years easily. The ThinkPad will go into my Collection and I'm tempted to just part our the Win7 tower or just turn it into some sort of server.
Unfortunately my HP is currently chilling in a box in my dad's garage in Ireland, probably squished...

So today I decided to hit the GPU with my SMD rework station as a sort of "Last Ditch effort" set to 200°C I wafted it around the die for about 5 minutes... reassembled the machine aaaaaaaand
Nada.....still no POST
This is either brilliant news or really bad news, it could mean my motherboard is the fault (I mean the computer was dropped I'm not surprised) or the GPU is too far gone which isn't awful news since I've located a "new" Radeon X1800 chip.
I'll look into the motherboard and see if that changes anything. One of the Dell Techs...

To add on to your thesis about the iBook G3 I actually have an IBM Thinkpad T42 which the fault ended up being the solder balls under the MR7500 chip, it's interesting to note that the T4X series failed from the board being flexed a lot...same applies to some Sony Vaio's. And I believe a Reball with lead solder should (knock on wood) prevent any future issues I just make sure these machines aren't transported with the lids open, my T42 is running beautifully now.
In regards to the X1800 in my Dell i believe it's failure was down to multiple factor's, I don't think it's the VRAM solder...

Is there a list of known dodgy ATI Radeon chips?
Hello again! (People are likely going to get tired of seeing posts from me lol)
I'd like to try and compile a list of known bad AMD/ATI Chipsets and graphics processors.
While I do not possess the knowledge of some of the brilliant minds on this forum, I can at least mention a few chips I've encountered as being troublesome.
1. ATI 216-0752001 (RS880M/RX280M) found inside 2 HP laptops, one I've since deemed screwed, and swapped the board to an intel one, the other HP seems to be less hateful and runs fine.
2. ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 and the...

Aha it's all starting to make sense now,
I believe this machine's fate ultimately lies with what I want to do with it, I'm on the edge with if I want to restore it or not. I have some "more interesting" Machines to test myself with
I think I'll convert this machine and remove the AMD sticker for something else to wear as everyone wins then.
I can even steal the fan from the old heatsink for another project.
Not every AMD system is fatally flawed as I've discovered so there's definitely room for improvement.
I think we...

Bad news
I've taken apart the two and tried merging the cards together but there's just too much difference between both of them
I can pray and hope the GPU isn't bad but I really don't know what to do next with this thing... while the card from the 6400 fits in the slot it doesn't look like it's in fully due to a screw mount being underneath which looks like it could be shorting some pads..
I've decided not to test further but I'm struggling to test the board and GPU separately as I don't have another machine to swap parts with.

Not a bad idea, and it's certainly an option. However unlike the infamous DV6 I own, this wears stickers so a transfer will be "very different" but this is merely cosmetic.
Do the DGPU models have the ability to disable the onboard chip to just use GMA or is that only a luxury on some boards?...

Dell XPS M2010 with Black screen, looking to retrofit another video card.
Hello again!
Within my collection I own a Dell XPS M2010 it's been a computer I've Allways wanted in my collection and I was super happy to finally own one.
However it doesn't seem to POST. The light all come on....semi normally. And the lights only Pulse when there's No RAM inserted.

Without the GPU both fans spin up and run. However...

Don't tell me......it's yet another machine with Bumpgate that snuck into my collection.
Or maybe it's just a chip that's fine just the HP thermal pad isn't doing its job and the chip fries itself, I heard there's a similar issue with the G6000 which is based on the same chassis
I'll reflow the chip and get back with the results.
What I'm confused about is how it could prevent the system turning on at all and not just a black screen like many are....

Hi there!
I probably should have added my post here earlier but here I am.
I'm a 20 year old aspiring technician with a hobby in repairing older notebooks for my personal collection.
my least favourite thing to Discover are burned motherboards and dodgy BGA chips. (looking at you Nvidia!)
However sometimes I can get good luck with some older machines, while sometimes I replace boards for speediness and ease of repair I never throw away my old motherboards just in case it can help me in the future!
my favourite...

Compaq Presario F700 - DA0AT1MB8H0 -Not turning but charges the battery
Hello there!.
I've recently aqquired a lot of older computers I wish to learn and fault find with.
Among the machine there are 5 defective machines - 4 of which with motherboard issues.
This Presario doesn't turn on but the battery indicator and charging port light up, the port doesn't tell me anything as it lights up even without being attached to the motherboard.
The fact the battery charges proves at least 18v is getting to all the nessesities.
The laptop has an AMD Athlon 64 X2 and a small Nvidia chip with the...

215-0752007 Alternatives
Hello!
as part of my hobbies i like to practice and toy around with older equipment, as such i have two older notebooks with AMD 215-0752007 Chipsets, both units have died, with only one (a G62-a15SA) still working if "Baked" first.
i believe i had a discussion with somebody a while back elsewhere about something similar, while browsing the forum i discovered there are other chips which can work but require slight board/bios modification.
i also know that some chips from later years have better reliability but checking a certain online supplier...
