  • Re: Your Best Dumpster Finds

This is very hard to believe but someone seriously threw out a Q6600 system with an aluminum case, some sort of Nvidia graphics card, and a high end Asus motherboard with heatpipes on the heatsink. I only took the Q6600 since someone else wanted the rest, but that's an awesome find. Why anyone would seriously throw that away beats me.

In a school ewaste event people threw out numerous working iPods and Gameboys. Unfortunately they won't let me take any.

  • Re: Your Best Dumpster Finds

Just got a pretty decent scanner. Guy down the road threw out an Epson 3490 Photo, so I asked him if it works and he said it did, so I took it.

I have some film I want to scan so I'm pretty thankful for this.

The metal thing is the stabilizer and it basically allows for you to hit longer keys off center with ease.

  • Re: Wireless Router only works 'Wired'

I rolled the drivers back a few generations and now it works fine, though I now lose WPA2. No big deal, WPA and a long password is good enough. Thanks!

The thing has Lelons though, though I'm not particularly intent on pumping any money into this old thing. Also the general capacitors area is very cool so not worried at all.

  • Re: Wireless Router only works 'Wired'

I flashed my router's firmware (D-Link Di-624, sort of old but works) yesterday and now I'm getting this problem. Ethernet works fine, but internet on wireless drops on a regular basis - my wireless card talks to the router just fine but after about 10 minutes I get no Internet. I usually have to disconnect from the router and then reconnect, in which case it then works for another 10 minutes before Internet again gets dropped. This was not an issue before the firmware flash.

FYI it is not overheating. I've already rigged a heatsink...

    Interesting.

Somewhat unrelated but I know that the IBM M2 keyboard often had issues due to poor capacitors. They're actually supposedly really nice clicky keyboards so worth a repair.

  • Re: Topuchpad vs trackpoint

3-button trackpoint > touchpad IMO. Though a mouse is better than both.

3-button trackpoint can do almost anything a multitouch trackpad can do with some keyboard shortcuts (which works because the trackpoint keeps your fingers on the keyboard). Middle-button for scroll, Ctrl + scroll for zoom, Alt-Left and Alt-Right for browser forward and back (or just use the forward/back dedicated buttons next to the arrow keys on Thinkpads), etc. Much less finger swiping, and your fingers stay on the keyboard.

    Also, in addition to Thinkpads,...

-Pair of Altec Lansing ACS 40 computer speakers. Missing subwoofer, but decent sound quality.
-6 pin -> 4 pin Firewire cable. Only literal dumpster find. I was photographing near the school dumpsters when some C++ books caught my eye, and I saw that there were also a bunch of these cables. These appeared brand new. So well, I reached in and grabbed one.
-IBM 5291-2 keyboard. Old school clicky keyboard, except it won't interface with a PC. Cool to have lying around though.
-Bottom half of an IBM Thinkpad T41p - missing a ton of parts...

  • Re: The Hall of Shame - Badcaps Photo Montage

Sorry, new here, but I presume you're saying I should replace them with polymers?

I'm definitely going to upgrade to Core 2 if I resuscitate this thing. An E6300 is $30 used and is faster, uses less power, and runs cooler.

Smithfield (90nm) Pentium D's in an SFF case can apparently kill a Rubycon:

    Also some swelled up KZJ's.

It's an SFF Dell Optiplex 745....
