Re: Toshiba Satellite - Locks up when plugged in
To continue, the problem is software related the latest antivirus program update was causing the freezing, I feel so silly now lol.
I didn't have to open the laptop and resolder new caps but since the symptom made me think it was related to the caps I only reinstalled the VGA driver and then went straight for the board ,the key thing to remember with this motherboard and NEC problem is that it hangs + shutsdown.
I'm glad it's working now and I wont be replacing the new caps I added it will have to stay...

Re: Toshiba Satellite - Locks up when plugged in
I tried 5 caps and then 6 caps but still hanged in windows at a random interval and sometimes when full reboot I get a thin blue horizontal line just before a black screen before the cursor appears.I found it weird why for 3 years 4 caps would work and now I needed 6 caps so I tried and no result, in meantime I changed HDD 500GB to an older one of 200GB and so far its working for a day or so , so maybe it's the drive or a windows problem but the freeze seemed like a hard-ware issue , I will report what I find.

Re: Toshiba Satellite - Locks up when plugged in
I replaced the capacitors after 3 years of working well but it still hangs at random intervals ,so I'm trying to troubleshoot (these were caps that were sealed in my drawer for 3 years, so I don't think they are bad), maybe it's some other capacitor , intel vga chip etc...

Physically bypass dedicated PCI-X vga and use Gm965 graphics on Toshiba.
Silly question but this is what has happened to me.
I have Toshiba satellite A200 with a Radeon HD card that is connected via a Toshiba Pci-express propitiatory slot, the motherboard uses the Intel GM965 chipset.
The graphics card seems to have died since the laptop would switch on and nothing would appear on screen internal nor external.
I then tried to reflow the Radeon but I think I used too much heat as when I booted the computer up the next time a 3 pin transistor burned up and smoke came from it.
now since the VGA card was already dead and it seems expensive to...

Re: Acer Aspire 5050 series no post ,vga
Thanks for your reply.
I will measure when I can but I think I need to heat it with a higher temperature as I don't think the temperature was high enough that I used.

Acer Aspire 5050 series no post ,vga
Have this Acer Aspire 5050 laptop that when you switch it on the power leds stay on and fans spin and no post nor VGA image on screen and then it switches off.
Thinking it's a graphics problem I did a quick re-flow on the ATI x1100 chip and now when switching it on the power leds switch on and off in a second while before it would switch off after about 30seconds.
Something else seems to be wrong here and anyone with experience with this model or graphics chips would be helpful.

Re: Toshiba Satellite L300 overheating ,bad heatsink?
Try the finger test by switching on the laptop and blocking the fan from moving with a screwdriver ,the grill should get hot in less than 30seconds ,mine doesnt get hot but warm but I manged to get a similar laptop model and it does get hot .
In my case heatsink is at fault.

Re: Toshiba Satellite L300 overheating ,bad heatsink?
QUOTE=joric;270607]I have the same problem with overheating, nothing helps (tried a few thermal pads and compounds). Had to buy a new heatsink and a new cpu (core 2 duo) on ebay, will report later. Does anyone know what are those (1) and (2)? I don't have those on my L300-11q. (1) looks like USB bluetooth (I don't have bluetooth), (2) looks like some kind of a light sensor (I don't have it either).

Re: Toshiba Satellite L300 overheating ,bad heatsink?
(1) I think is the webcam cable since my board is the same.
(2) Is speakers.
Or the other way round i have to check.
I will also report if my problem has been solved as soon as I get heatsink, the new ones are expensive so will ask sellers that sell used if they can test them with the water method.

Re: Toshiba Satellite L300 overheating ,bad heatsink?
I tried without the fan connected, the CPU and VGA section gets hot but the fins by the fan stays cool even without fan .I then switched off the laptop, removed heatsink and quickly poured cold water over fins but the CPU and VGA plates stayed hot.
It took long to cool down and I suspect it's not doing it's job correctly because I assume that when it works properly the fan starts to blow on the fins then the VGA and CPU plates should cool down instantly.
The sticker on the heatsink says that it's four years old....
