replied to abit vp6 poly mod
    Re: abit vp6 poly mod

I don't know about where you're from, but here, Electrical and Electronic engineers are very different and Electrical engineers wouldn't know a bloody scrap about capacitors or the operations of compared to an Electronic engineer. Even a lot of Electronic engineers are ignorant about the realities of cap selection and operation. They know how it all works on paper (1/2piFC, sin(wt+O) etc) but not why a solid polymer capacitor will last longer in the heat compared to a wet electrolytic. The closest we get to studying component failure is covering Transients....

  • Re: Do you find this mod report credible?

Considering how shitty the original heatsinks were, it wouldn't surprise me. He's just about doubled the heat dissipation capacity there. I'd still want to see it on a CRO for proof though.

  • Re: Another Antec TP 2.0 500W Recap

I still haven't got that supply working by the way. It's living under my desk, haven't got much time these days with uni(electronic engineering yay)

maybe i'll get a chance to bring it in to one of the labs and stick it on a CRO. I know it's not worth the effort for a broken psu i bought for $20 but it has become a matter of personal pride. I'm sure you've all been there ...

  • Re: When to Choose ZL vs. MCZ

I am aware there are more appropriate cap choice available, people seem to be ignoring that I'm using the MBZ caps because that is what I have here, on my desk, pulled from another motherboard. I'm not ordering these in, if I were to order any I'd call on Big Pope and match the current caps with Samxon GCs.

    1500uF 6.3v 10mm 0.014Ω 2280mA
    1000uF 16v 8mm 0.012Ω 2220mA

Which is what I will do if the MBZ cause problems. I understand entirely that I'm increasing capacitance by at least 50% but...

1000uF 16V KZG will be replaced with 1800uF 16V MBZ
1500uF 6.3V KZG will be replaced with 2200uF 6.3V MBZ

The only reason I'm going up a step in capacitance is because that's what I've got laying around reclaimed them from a working gigabyte board that wasn't needed any more. Increasing total capacitance isn't what I was going for, I'd actually be happier if they were the same size or smaller but I'm working with what I have.

I agree that it's a stupid place for a heatpipe cooler. Can't believe they thought this...

Forgot to say the MBZs I have are slightly hugher capacitance than the KZGs i'll be replacing 1500uF 6.3v and 1000uF 16v KZGs with 2200uF and 1800uF MBZs. Stupid forum software edit time limit.

    Speaking of which;

See the unpopulated spots? Any suggestions on what I should put in them? For reference it is an A8N-SLI Premium (socket 939). The heatpipes will be going pretty soon (having a waterblock made for the VRMs) and I figure since I'm going to have a few spare MBZs I might as well populate...

  • Re: When to Choose ZL vs. MCZ

So if i use a bunch of MBZs to replace some stressed out KZGs (undercooled VRM, they are too hot to touch, running 24/7) I'm going in the right direction? Would it be worth sourcing some MCZs, or is the difference not worth it?

Lets assume for a minute that the transformers are fine since most likely they are.

    agreed

Check the input capacitors and rectifier.

all caps have been replaced with new ones except primary caps, which i have little reason to suspect beyond being FUs. I could replace them but would rather not unless absolutely necessary.

Is voltage present at the primary switching MOSFET?

I'm trying to avoid live testing at the moment. I'm game only if you can tell me exactly...

  • Re: Would just recapping solve my problem - desoldered MOSFETs

edit: never mind, worked it out . Quick question. Are these two components interchangeable and am i right in deducting that the Infineon 06N03LA is superior to the Advanced Power 9918H? (data sheet attached)

I'm pretty sure my ASUS board is fitted with the Advanced Power FETs, while i have a good deal of the Infineon units available from a Foxconn board (that also carried some nice juicy Rubycon MBZs that i'll be using to replace the UCC KZGs...

Anyone got any tips for safely removing and replacing FETs? I'm having serious trouble getting them off.

what i'm actually looking for is confirmation that the diode effect between the pins is as i've described. All the other VR modules i've tested are different. Trying to get my hands on another TPII atm so i can compare.

OK Quick update, (C) is positive VRM L7812CV

Here's a quick diagram I did that illustrates the results of the continuity tests I did. Can someone tell me if this is right? I can't really glean from the datasheet what the results should look like.Re: Truepower 2.0 recap and repair

    (B) is closed circuit on in->out pins, no connection from COM to in or out.
    (C) doesn't have continuity between any pins.

Resistor (S) reads as 2.2ohm (too color blind to read the code in place, removed and tested with multi)

    Transformer winding QR reads 1.8ohm

Neither MOVs are closed circuit. Here's hoping they aren't polarized, I can't be sure I put them back in the same way I took em out. Had to remove a primary cap to get at the little buggers too.

47uF 35V if i'm reading it correctly. Replaced Koshin with a Rubycon YXF.

In hindsight i should've only replaced the bulged cap and blown diode, then tested the psu instead of going the whole hog before testing. oh well. Serious lack of motivation on this atm....

  • Re: Fluctuating voltage on A8N-SLI Premium

    Quick update.

I now run at 2.6ghz stable with a ram divider that puts my ram at about ddr440. Attached is a screenshot of Speedfan. I just happened to switch over and have a look at the Vcore graph when my cpu finished a Folding@Home work unit. So what you're seeing is the difference between the CPU under load (left of the graph) and the CPU at idle (right of the graph)

pretty dramatic eh? I actually had the system booting at 2.75ghz but it was unstable. 2.8ghz posted but wouldn't boot regardless of the voltage....

  • Re: Truepower 2.0 recap and repair

i was having real trouble with solder wick until i bought a slightly bigger tip (2mm chisel from a 1mm needle) which helped a lot. then i bought a better brand wick (goot) which was a big improvement. Finally i added a flux pen to my kit and now i can suck that solder off no problems at all. at 400C i can move solder very quickly without heating up components barely at all (only just warm to the touch). It makes heavy PCB work so much less frustrating.

you can see here where the two probe points contacted the PCB. the tips of both my probes look like abused soldering iron tips I've cleaned them up with some flux and removed the solder that was baked on.

You can see there the ends of the power cable I butchered to run a nice long ~1m length from the input circuitry to the actual PSU PCB, so i don't have to keep the board in the case if i want to do live testing (which i really don't). I'll get stuck back into it tonight i think, first order of business is to replace the solder...

thanks for the hasty reply 9s.

I'll probably take your advice on insulating my probes that little bit more. They've taken only superficial damage this time but i think i'll grab another set all the same.

I tried taking readings on both AC and DC settings and got nothing. I was fully expecting to blow the fuse in my meter at the very least. I had the power-on pin shorted and all. Beginning to think the input circuit may need a look at. It's pretty simple but i have to de-solder it from the power socket to get a good...
