Hi,
I've recently been trying to get a Dell Latitude 3420 to come out of Manufacturing Mode but for some strange reason it simple won't do it (the key combo of Alt + F does takes it out of the mode temporarily but the laptop doesn't seem to hold this configuration change). The fan spins very fast throughout, indicating that no change to the BIOS is being made permanently, which would be expected for this operation.
I've attached the BIOS image dump, the Service Tag is D2WDS93.
If someone could take a look and see if it can be rebuilt, that would be great....

I managed to fix my own issue.
Turns out that the error is produced if using segments (derived from PFS tool) of a BIOS package, within FIT tools decomp folder, that is newer than the image taken from the board itself. For example, if your laptop has bios v1.5 installed, you download and use a stock v1.6 bios image, and build your new one from parts of both. Simply using the same stock version as the one on your board (v1.5) or an older bios version (v1.0) image seems to make things work as expected.

CSE/Layout Project Error Message - FIT Tool
Hi,
Has anyone come across the attached error message whilst using CSME System Tools v16.0 r3.
I've just loaded up an XML generated from the same application, and the error appears with no real clue as to how to fix it:
Exception: Error occurred whilst trying to create container CseRegion. Reason Mismatch between CSE version and layout project version
Layout Accepts: 16.0.x.y
CseVersion: 16.1.25.2128

Patience is key here.....
Try and keep the temperature of the hot air staton around 340-360degress (the hotter it is the more likely it'll burn the chip and melt the casing if the motherboard hasn't been removed from the outer case).
My advise would be to clean the area of the chip with isopropyl alcohol, apply some flux and heat the pins (or as near to the pads where the pins should be with it being a WSON package) with a soldering iron, with a small tip. Once fresh solder has been applied, use the hot air...

Sourcing Replacement BIOS Chip within UK - GigaDevice 25R256DYIG
Hi,
I'm trying to source a replacement BIOS chip for a Dell laptop, the current one being a GigaDevice (AJ2144) 25R256DYIG. Its a WSON8 8x6 package.
I'm struggling to find this chip within the UK.
Does anyone know where I can source one from? If not this model, a possible alternative is a Winbond 25R256JVEN but again I'm struggling to find this one within the UK,
Any help would be great.

Yes that's right you won't be able to use a clamp to get the data from this chip. You'll have to desolder the chip using a soldering iron or the safer option of a hot-air gun for electronics components. To be on the safe side, I'd disassemble the laptop to reveal the motherboard fully, as you'll risk melting the laptops casing otherwise.
I use a RT809F programmer - you could try a CH341A programmer but it's not worth the risk of damaging your chip - invest in a decent programmer and it pays off...

I've been doing alot of research recently into the world of BIOS editing and building of images, out of curiosity mainly.
Lots of Youtube videos as well as threads in this forum (as well as others) mention the term 'unlocked' bios which generally means the removal of BIOS passwords from a dumped image to allow full access to the BIOS/UEFI menu. However, a handful mention that a prompt for the Service Tag will...

I've tried both BIN file images but still the laptop isn't working.
Hoaca388, your image makes the laptop turn on, but with a black screen (no power to the screen) and the keyboard backlight illuminates. The CPU gets a bit warm and then after around 10-15 secs the laptop turns off. This repeats itself continously.
Lapfix, your simply makes the LED status light turn amber then gradually fades, but there's no activity on the laptop other than this.
Any help would...

Can someone please help to generate a 'health' BIOS image for a Latitude 5420.
Chip is a Winbond 25R256JVEN wson8 - image dumped using RT809F with W25Q256FV settings as this chip isn't listed in the software (works apparently, have tried other recommended model settings, all with the same results).
Service Tag noted in file name.

Why Can I Flash Some BIOS Chips a Clip and Others Desoldered?
Hi,
I'm trying to find if there's a logical answer or reason why some BIOS chips can be flashed/programmed whilst still attached to the board (CMOS battery and main battery disconnected) via a clip/pogo probe, and other chips require them to be desoldered and mounted onto some other platform, whether it be a specific PCB or a clamping mechanism. This is regarding laptop and desktop computers.
Any explanations would be handy to know.

The RTC/CMOS battery has been disconnected as well as the battery whilst performing flashes.
