  • Re: Need to make the internal PC speaker louder...

Fan headers used to be considered safe only to 500mA, (circa mid/late socket A era) dunno if they've beefed that rating on newer boards.

Some soundcards had a header you could connect the speaker output to, can't remember seeing it on anything recent though. Wouldn't hook up too large a speaker directly to the board though, back EMF might kill it.

I had one out of an old 60s or 70s radio, paper cone 4 inch, that was still rated under half a watt, but that was a lot louder and crisper than the regular sized ones. Had that hooked up on my 486 before I could afford a soundcard lol.

Maybe just using some PCV plumbing parts jammed on top...

  • Re: MB won't even attempt POST

I've seen that. Boards that won't POST with a bad or absent CMOS battery....

  • Re: Pencil Tip or Chisel Tip

I look for cheap tips on sale, whatever shape, buy a bunch and just carve them to shapes I like. Even bought copper rod before and tapped an end on it and then carved the tip to shape. (Bust that iron tho')

My favourite own-rolled tip shape at the moment is hard to describe, it's a kinda "lopsided pyramid" kinda manages to roll in the benefits of a pencil tip, chisel tip and a hmmm whaddaya call-um.. sliced cylinder type effort, spade tip??? You've got a point, a flat edge each side and a broader flat on top for best heat transfer....

  • Re: Well I never...

I blew the caps in quite a few 386 era "230" or "250" Watt supplies when I was trying to get a K6-2 system clocked over 500. Put it on an early AT era "200W" supply and all was good. Cheapness started creeping in pretty early on really.

Come to think if it, I've blown a couple of Max Power "250W" ATXes on boards that they shouldn't have had any trouble with.
