Thanks. I have replaced the cable and the issue remains. I made sure the cable was the exact same so it's not the cables fault. I counted the number of contacts too. Any other suggestions?...

Hey mate. Sorry if I didn't make it clear but I have already replaced the trackpad + cable and it has the same issue. What are the chances I bought a faulty new touchpad?
The short still occurs without the keyboard disconnected so I'm hesitant to replace it....

Hi guys.
Details about device:
RAM: 8gb 1600 MHz DDR3
Processor:1.6 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5

The machine was water damaged. Corrosion was cleaned and it boots up fine.
The keyboard and the trackpad don't work. When booting up, the chip shown in the image below is shorted (?) and gets very hot to the touch.

The keyboard gets power, as the caps lock light flickers. It does not turn off/on when pressed though.
The trackpad was replaced but the exact same thing happens.
The trackpad was tested with the keyboard disconnected...

Hi! I'm a student that hopes to learn more about fixing SMD electronics. I have a little bit of knowledge on this sort of thing, but only with through hole stuff. SMD boards are very intimidating!
