  • Re: The beast is dying, heart or brain-which is it

Yes that is generally true for contacts run right up against max spec.
And in the cost-cutting world of PC component mfg there's little wiggle room.

When I've "repaired" failed contacts I've either had to re-plate them, or run them at, say perhaps, 90% max rating. In many cases the dielectric compound worked wonders provided the contact didn't fail from overstress.

It's interesting to note that over-bending and over re-tensioning the contact creates little ripples or waves in the surface...

Well once it's stabilized, KEEP it stabilized with dielectric grease.

Otherwise. Then. I guess one fix is to increase the contact and surface area. Multiple contact points in parallel would work. Increase the surface area till the connection(s) no longer get warm. If you need to hack it then hack it!

Or, If after a few days, like you say, they are warming up, dielectric grease may help. This forms a seal against the normal oxygen in the air from reacting with the metals. It helps curb the electrolysis/corrosion...

There's a "big science" behind the physics of connectors. It becomes important when they're run right to the limit mostly.

And simply put, here, the surface area of the contact points is/was not enough for the load.

Perhaps the connector was faulty in the first place. OR you blew it up with too much overclocking.

I don't know the answer, I only considered the connector aspect of the problem.
Power-on & Power-off surges (normal day to day use) may have overcome the connector...

Once a connector has burned like this, it will never be able to carry the same amount of current again: no matter what you do with it with regards to cleaning and re-tensioning and crap like that.

The connector needs to be upgraded or jumpered with wires that are soldered. Just don't run it out of spec and you won't have these issues. Have fun!

why would you want to smash them with a hammer?

If you need that level of protection, then you buy a steel safe and put the media in there....

I typically throw out a lot of slot one and pentium pro setups. It's just so difficult to find good homes for these things. This and a lot of vintage computing stuff.

  • Re: WD Caviar Green HDD failed. Any way to recover files?

I have an old 10Meg Xebec drive, from the Apple II days of the 70's and 80's. I just powered it up and read all the data just fine after 33 years of it sitting around. No stiction or anything. It made all same banging noises and squeaks as when it was new back in the day! Very nice. I didn't refresh the data, with the intent of checking it again much later.

I am also running a long term test on a WD Caviar 2200 212MB drive from 1992. And a 1TB 2.5" Elements drive from 2009-2010. So we shall see how long...

If 1 drive is holding all your plans to an SSTO engine, and it goes bad.. Well, I promise you you'll be quite happy to pay $50,000 for whatever equipment is necessary to retrieve your data. You'll also be quite enthusiastic enough to give the tech a bonus.

I lurk all over the place. Seeing some of the advice about swapping the platters without a care in the world.. boy does that irk me but good and really riled me up today. Do the folks giving advice to swap heads and platters straight...

Perhaps he put it in a box and stuffed it under the bed. Awaiting a time when it may be more cost effective.

Spam? Please.. Ultimately if I can't do anything with a disk, then my recommendation would be a pro service, any pro service. Not any. But you get the idea. I offer my expertise to the little guy for free, a hobby if you will, been doing it for years.

If I can't do anything for free, then the cost would be ~ $1,000 of a professional operation. I leave it to the drive's owner to pick where...

Platter swapping is not something you can do without a specialized tool and a clean room. Data recovery labs would prefer to never remove platters, many like to swap in other components. Or if they change platters, then its done as a whole assembly, removing them from the drive in one unit, then oftentimes putting them on a spin table. To the layman, this would be a big-ass open-air hard disk and motor.

Freezing the drive can cause frost on the platters and crash the heads. This is last resort option. Sometimes...
