• MacBook Pro 16" (2019) A2141: power consumption? Dead GPU? MacOS not installing

A friend brought his fresh-from-ebay macbook pro A2141 after he failed replacement keyboard plugging.
I fixed all the little problems he introduced.

I am unable to install macOS to this device. Both Sequoia and Catalina (from Internet Recovery) start to install, but after ~2-5 minutes into the installation the macbook does a hard restart (max fan spin for a split second, then reboot without chime).

I noticed what I think is a very high power consumption, like 20V/1.7A when activating WiFi for internet recovery, and more like 20V/3.7-4.1A while downloading the recovery...

• After thinking a bit longer, i think both GATE_Q1 and GATE_Q2 should oscillate. Will find another donor tomorrow to transplant the third ISL on that board. Didn't find any shorts, and diode readings around the isl are ok, too.

• Macbook Air A2337 not turning on - ISL or CD issue?

Have an A2337 here, which suffered some serious coffee damage. After cleaning C5220 fell from the board, so I replaced it and after lifting the ISL I found pad C5 was also partially corroded, first reballed the original ISL (no power), and then replaced it from a donor.
I now get 5V / ~10mA stable on the charger, and found the CHGR_GATE_Q2 (GATE_Q2 on the ISL) doesn't get activated (Q1 does).

Is this an ISL or a communication issue (perhaps with the CD3217s)?

• seifaldennseifaldenn Thank you! Unfortunately, that produces the same result as with my cleaning tries: Fans spin, but only 20v/250mA (without battery), and cpu stays cool. With the original bios, cpu and fans turn on, "normal"...

• Serial number C02TW15MHTDF (as was visible in the dump file); board number is 820-00928 (as for all A1707).

Thank you!

• Hi,
have this a1707 MacBook Pro, bought from Kleinanzeigen (like Craigs List). PCH had the glass blown away; replaced the PCH and the power switch before that, and have booting current (like 1-1.6 A as usual), but no chime and screen stays black.
Figured I need to clean ME, but failed to do that using MuertoGB's tool.

May some soul be so kind and clean the me region on the attached SPI-ROM image?...

• Macbook Pro A1707/A1990 tcon

Hi,
I bought an A1707 2017 Macbook Pro for repair.
One of the high side mosfets for the GPU shorted, and killed the GPU, and, I think, the tcon - display backlight is working with a known good mainboard, but no image.
I do have a number of physically broken displays, so I have some donor parts.
I did not find schematic or boardview for the tcon.

Which chip(s) does eDP signal decoding and needs to be swapped?

Are there any good repair guides for that tcon out there?

Best
Thomas

• A1990 20v/ 0.04-0.08a

Hi,
I got myself an A1990, 2018, board #820-01041A off of ebay (i know -.-).
Seller mentioned liquid damage.
First inspection showed only few (sugary) drops, but under the microscope I spotted some areas with degraded solder and smd contacts. I replaced around 10-12 etched caps and replaced solder in these areas.

The board now switches to 20v, takes 40-80mA. I found no shorts on any power rail.

I'm a complete n00b when it comes to those T2 machines - where should I look next?
Are the A1990s even supposed to power up without battery? I've...

• Re: New Members - please post your introductions here

Hi all,
I'm Thomas, 53, from Germany (near Hamburg). I've had a vocational training as an electronics technician back when 74xx TTLs were a thing (mid 1980s), and did a few hardware mods on my c64 back in the day.
I'm doing macbook repairs for a year now, inspired by Louis Rossmann, Paul Daniels and TCRS-Tim - mostly 2012-2017 MBA and 2011-2015 MBP.
