• Re: Hanns-G HG281D, LCD Monitor no power

    Status update:
I went above and beyond and decided that I may want to make fixing hardware my hobby as time permits. I purchased items >$600 with Digi-Key - a multi-meter with capacitance testing capability and some more bells and whistles (knowing it would not solve hardware issues, but maybe make it more motivating working with it), a work center with vise (this really makes all the difference when soldering!), and basics (!), such as soldering braid, flux and tin.

So, on the intermittent power-on monitor issue:...

I think I answered my question with 493-1767-ND - correct?

Thanks again for all your help and assistance!...

So, if I may ask, what would be the proper replacement for
    CapXon, 16V, 10μF, 105°C, P733, 4.2mm dia, 5.75mm h, 1.5mm lead spacing, 6mm dia surface space, 2mm spaced holes?

P11212-ND or P14482-ND or is there even a better one?

I assume P11212-ND, but your input will greatly help me making the right choices down the road. Thank you!...

I have followed these instructions and think to have gotten quite comfortable except that in some cases so many results pull up that I don't know the difference from one to another, e.g. what does the "Ripple Current" rating have to say, or the "Impedance" ... that's where I get lost. I kinda know what it means in theory, but don't know which is better or worse.

I just realized that I made one obvious listing error. The 3rd line on the logic board should be:

    CapXon KM, 16V, 470μF,...

True. I have not found a resolution to this particular issue either.

Good idea. I might as well get them all in one shipment, but test them out by sections hopefully helping isolating the issue and potentially helping somebody down the road pinpointing the issue a bit faster.

I went online @ Digi-Key and dang, this is a bit over my head. I see there are many additional parameters besids V, uF, with, hight. A couple I think I found, but some others (like the 470uF) I cannot find. Your help...

You confirmed my suspicion. What a pain in the rear fany!

    Will do - Thanks!

Good point. I think I will attempt the logic board first and see where that goes. Hopefully not Mount Trashmore. If it fixes the issue, I won't touch the power board....

    Thank you for the infos!

Now, I thought I would attempt the soldering part but honestly, I have embarrassed myself simply removing the capacitors in question. I really thought this to be much more easier than it really is.

First of, I am using the Wall-Lenk LSP-110 soldering iron.
The specs list the heat output to be between 30-125W,
    reaching temps between 410-750 deg...

    Hi momaka,

I have tried my best at taking a soldering iron and reworking some of the dark gray and not so shiny soldering points. The result is that it really did not change anything.

However, I read through your post a couple times and it seems (correct me if I am wrong) that the power supply board may be OK despite the darker area that I could see on that as well. You clearly point out IMG_3871 and IMG_3872, which is the logic board, am I correct?

    I now carefully inspected that...

Now that the screen was on for 3 hours non-stop and got nice and warm/hot, I have turned it off. Came back on right-a-way after turning it back on and I performed the turn-off-on cycle with 2-3sec wait periods about 5 times. After about 5 times, it would not come on. I had to hit the power button another 5 times or so. Then the power light would briefly flicker 3 times for a split second at each subsequent attempt turning the screen on. Finally, it remained on again.
So that's the symptom it's showing. Hence I think...

Would you be able to point me to some of the locations so I could possibly visually inspect the areas in question?

The screen has been on now for about 3 hours without a problem. Perfect picture and everything. I anticipate that it won't come on again after I turn it off now. I will atempt soon and take it apart again.

Since this trouble-shooting may be well over my head, I am thinking about sending it out to somebody for a reasonable repair price, if that's possible. With inexperience I am more...

With the ESR tester, can capacitors remain on the PCB?

What's a realistic price range for replacement capacitors for the power supply I posted?

Hmmm... not so sure, because after it was on for a lengthy time, I could not turn it back on immediately after turning it off. I had to disconnect the monitor from the A/C for a couple of hours, and when I hit the power button after that long "cooling off" period, I had to go through the same process as in my test this morning: Hit the...

Latest update: After responding here on the forum, I got back to the screen, and the picture was perfectly fine, clear, no issues. Even the computer could restart and everything came back up perfectly fine. I almost wanted to think that I love self-healing monitors, but I knew I would put it to the test when turning the monitor off and back on.
In fact, I did. I hit the power switch. Monitor off. Hit power switch, monitor remains off - no power light at all, not even a flicker as earlier. Multiple repeats, monitor remains...

That is the minimum I can do on my side since you are providing such excellent help.

That sounds truly motivating ... I will get this monitor back up and running.

AC/DC, power and voltage is pretty clear, but checking resistors, capacitors, that I have no clue of. Thanks' for the link, I will keep studying.

After disassembling the entire screen to the last screen I thought I will post my response without putting it back together. Glad I did not do that, but truly...

Yes, perfectly understand. Attached please find the images and I hope they will be good enough to get you the info you will need.

Thanks for responding - I really would love to have more electronics background. I hope we can get this puzzle solved....

I believe I have a dead power supply as well but simply have no idea where to start with the multimeter, since I have little to no electronics experience.

When I turn on the monitor, the power light comes on for a split second, then goes off. It will remain off then. I have taken the monitor apart and doubt that it is the inverter board. With a dead inverter board, I would expect the power light still remain on.

I shall dare to ask... but will attempt anyways: You got such great images and I...
