Re: Bathing PCB's in Ethanol
Ethanol is a great solvent. As long as you let it dry out proper. Ethanol chemically LOVES water and will suck water out of the air and into every nook and cranny of the PCB. just keep that in mind.

Re: Repairing a snapped pcb
To add strength. Perhaps use some epoxy like JB weld to glue the component side with some plastic to help prevent flexing.

Re: Calculating resistor values in parallel with Caps
I'd suggest you post a picture. Best to try to see if you can read the burnt resistor value. One use of a resistor across a cap is for bleed off the voltage. It would normally be a higher ohmage value. Seeing the component and what is NEAR might help too.

A picture os what you described might help if Harp's answer is not enough for you.

Re: MOV question
Hey fellas thanks feor the replies! And Redwire thanks for the link. I will def. go higher rating. The reason this MOV blew is the power company has a tree fall and mst have shorted distribution lines and ZAP. loss of power to an entire area then they reset and this device ia like from the 1980's or 1990's at the latest. So I will go with a good a TMOV as I can find. I amlooking mouser since they have another component I needed for this same device. Its a MAINS filter like this: (spec wise)
KEMET
FAHAV3100ZB000

I am thinking this is a good fit:
MOV14V130Y

MOV question
I have a blown MOV (its RED about the size of a dime) its directly across 120V AC mains. I would think this is a "standard" surge supressor. What is a reasonable component to repalces this? the inline FUSE is 4 amps fast blow. I'd like to still provide some future protection. Any suggestion are appreciated.

WOW! They say lighning never strikes the same place twice, I guess that is NOT true!...

Re: AC / DC ADAPTER upgrade?
Start with checking the rating of those MOSFETs that have heatsinks. Then check the transformer rating. Check the DIODEs for their ratings as well. Those are the man components of concern. I am sure Redwire will have some good feedback too! But this should get you started!

Re: Help identify a Zener?
Jopat, According to Redwire prior post..."The parts are vanilla switching transistors, anything would work"...I just used parts I had on had or on other unused circuit boards

Re: ECH81/6AJ8 Vacuum Tube Question
So did AM get better? My thought was that you needed a nie LONG antenna for AM on those old radios! I am curious.

Re: ID and Sourcing a Microswitch
or go grab one off an old router or modem or any similar electronics that you might have in the junk box. the reset buttons are same.... its likely SPST momentary contact NO.

Re: Video receiver
the LM1889 is used to create an RF that can be input to an antenna of a TV. If you are sending the video from the TDA2549 to RCA and wangt to modulate the video again ( like change the RF frequency to channel 3/4) or the like then you would use the lM2889.
