Re: Dimension 8400 with bad HN(M)'s
I ordered from Mouser which is about 70 miles from me. Much to my surprise, I got them today and got them all replaced. However, upon reassembling the computer some strange things happened.
First thing as soon as I plugged it in was a loud high pitch noise that tapered off. Sounded like a camera flash charging only it was louder. The case was open so they may be why it was so loud but I bet this isn't normal.
2nd thing to happen was the fan went into jet mode. None of the new caps are puffed up and I replaced all...

Re: Dimension 8400 with bad HN(M)'s
Ok, got an update. I found a guy online who had the exact same caps I took off only newer versions. I believe you guys call it "good dates". I ordered exactly what I took off the board. Same series and all except one.
One change I did make is one of the 6.3V was upgraded to a 10v. It was really swollen and the 10v had a higher mA rating. The caps I took off have the bad pre-2006 codes on them. I will check the new ones when they come in. I doubled my order since the owner told me they have a 2nd identical machine that...

Re: Dimension 8400 with bad HN(M)'s
I appreciate all your effort and information. I have one problem though. I can solder and I have done several GX series dells for some friends as well as 3 of my own and they are all still running with no problem. I have always used cap "kits" to replace the ones I took off. Unfortunately, none of what you said makes any sense to me. I am looking more for a link to a cap on this forums store to a good substitution for these caps I have listed. I hope that makes sense.
As for your question on the size; 8MM will certainly...

Re: Dimension 8400 with bad HN(M)'s
Ok guys, here is what I need. These are the bigger ones that have any kind of bulge at all. The rest are perfectly flat with no buldge at all. What can I replace these with? Also, do you need to know the measurements of these?
220uf 6.3v VP(M)
470uf 16v VR(M)
470uf 10v VR(M)
220uf 6.3 HC(M)
1000uf 10v HN(M)
2200uf 10v HM(M)
2200uf 6.3v HN(M)

Re: Dimension 8400 with bad HN(M)'s
Ok guys, I talked to the owner of this 8400 and told them what the problem is. They want me to replace all the known bad caps. This thing is full of these Nichicon caps, is there a kit that will get me all I need to replace all the caps or do I need to write them down myself?
If I write them down will you guys tell me what to replace them with? I don't want to buy the wrong caps.

Re: Dimension 8400 with bad HN(M)'s
All the smaller cap tops are in tact and not raised at all. These I have listed are all Nichicon. More details below:
5 x 1000 uf 10v HN(M)
1 x 2200 uf 10v HM(M)
1 x 2200 uf 6.3v HN(M)
I had a couple of GX 280's awhile back with this crappy brand on and had to replace all them too. I am ordering 2 x 1800 uf 6.3 MCZ to finish a leftover board I had that Dell let me keep. So, if these above will work I will be ordering tonight. Thanks.
As for the 85C caps, it has a bunch...

Re: dell Optiplex gx280
Hey guys, I called up Dell and it turns out that my warranty was some business gold package so they sent me a new motherboard to replace the one I messed up with the screwdriver. Lol. Oh and guess what, they have different caps already on them! No nichicon. The tech guy told me it was a huge problem with that cap manufacturer but that they got it under control now. Anyway, I don't need the caps now. I am happy.

Re: dell Optiplex gx280
Ok guys, I am apparently too stupid to be allowed to live. Lol. I am not a cap expert but I am A+, N+ and MCSE certified. However no amount of education prevents me from screwing things up from time to time. I need another GX280 Motherbaord. Any ideas of where I can get one and cheap? I had just soldered the last cap onto the board. I dropped a Philips screwdriver into the LGA 775 socket and destroyed a bunch of the little pins. Why they took them of the CPU and integrated them into the board is beyond me but never the less, I still need a new board. I am...

Re: dell Optiplex gx280
So if I have a couple of 1000uF6.3v then I can use them in place of the 820uF6.3's? Even if they are bigger or smaller than the originals? As long as they don't get in the way of course.

Re: dell Optiplex gx280
Yeah but the kit doesn't come with enough 8MM to replace those other caps. So, if the voltage is the same and the uF is higher I can use it in place of any smaller uf cap? I am no expert by any means. as you can probably tell. lol

Re: dell Optiplex gx280
Just so that you guys know the cap kits sold here for the GX270 will not fix the GX280's. I know the kits don't say they will, but I was hopefull as I had not seen the full damage prior to recieving the kits. I had ordered two kits and they are each short 6 caps of replacing them all that are bad. This is what the GX280 has:
10 - nichicon 1800uF6.3v - All bad 8MM wide and about 20MM tall
5 - nichicon 1500uF6.3v - All bad 10MM wide and about 12MM tall
3 - nichicon 820uF6.3v - All bad 8MM wide and about 12MM tall
...

Re: dell Optiplex gx280
Hey guys, I just joined here after my two desktop GX280's crapped out on me and both on the same day. Am I correct in understanding (after reading this) that the caps on the board are all that is wrong here? What if I got two new cases with PSU's and new MB's and moved everything to it. Should it work or is there anything else you guys are having to replace?
I have the bad caps and the screaming fans like you guys all mentioned.
