• Re: Samsung Syncmaster T220 - bad caps?

Howdy marlo

I'm keeping an eye on your progress, I am interesting in seeing this get fixed!

The connector looks like it got pretty mangled, does it feel like it would stay in place when getting the wires reattached? I'm thinking off all they ways that can be fixed and I'm interested in what others have to say as nothing I can think of will be very classy.

I finally posted the tutorial, I'm still adding more - Including some direct quotes and shout-outs to a few of you here that have helped me out. Word of warning though, I've embedded most of the pictures into the thread and I know that annoys some.

• Suggested rework station

As great as the little fire starters are from radio shack, I was looking at full rework stations. Anyone have any good experiences with these? I was looking for something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Aoyue-Digital-Station-Soldering-absorber/dp/B000HDG0AO

Thanks all

edit: I found a good review of the rework station I liked to

Thanks for the info, I didn't think I could get a good solder joint on there just because it was a big piece of metal. Great find on the TV, why would his grandkids fight over? Wouldn't he just use it? Or does he have too many awesome TVs from finding and fixing them ...

Sir you are correct, but why would this make it last longer? It does remove the heat sources from the other components, but this also places the heat sources in a small unventilated box.

I thought that diode in the picture was broken when I saw it. The break does look suspiciously clean and doesn't go through any of the print; is it a little ferret bead?

I did use the 'manage attachments' to upload, that is why there are thumbnails at the bottom and I didn't read anything about not putting pictures inline in the 'Forum Rules *ALL NEW MEMBERS, PLEASE READ!! UPDATED!!*' sticky. I didn't think it would be too bothersome as the pictures are a fairly small 800x535

I wasn't actually looking for help either- the fix worked and I was looking for others to either explain what that thing is or help others with a broken 7600GT card....

Nvidia 7600GT Repair

So after letting this thing sit in front of me for a bit, I noticed something...

OH MY!!

Dab of solder here... There we go

I can't believe it worked, I put it in my little brother's computer to test and the screen turned on. I might try to touch up the solder later, but I can't believe that even worked....

Although it's a little late, I found a thread on the exact monitor I've been working on. https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=7900&page=2 In it mouser and Toasty both recommend replacement caps... I don't think I order one in common with the two.

Moving on, here is what I've ordered for each replacement:

Originals:
All CapXon GL

47uF 50v 11x6.3mm Ripple: 240-250 ESR: 0.44-0.65
680uF 25v 16x10mm Ripple: 920 ESR: 0.074
330uF 25v 13x10mm Ripple: ~722 ESR: ~0.095 (My own...

animal0307 had also just suggested an oven reflow over at overclock.net but last thing he tried it on epic failure. It was ram and I believe it went from getting errors in memtest to not being detected at all.

Oh man do I want a nice reflow station and soldering iron. I needed a new tip for my rat shack fire starter and of course they didn't have anything close to the right one.

• Don't make them like they used to

I know it's not a troubleshooting question but I didn't know where else to put this, so anyway...

I'm recapping two screens right now and thought I would open my test/bench screen. It's been around for years and I thought it might be worth a look. So what do I find? Polys. That is why it has lasted so long.
I got a kick out of finding those and a DVI connector on such an old screen. It's an HP f50.

ps - It does 75hz refresh rate

• Re: EVGA 7600GT 256mb PCIe Poly Mod

Saw this thread when I first set up an account on badcaps and thought, "I have a dead 7600GT, maybe this will fix it!" But sadly looks like I have a very different revision, the factory beat me to the poly punch. Where fixing it is concerned, all the talk about these things dying isn't too inspiring either.

Sorry pcbonez, I was talking about the polys I used in my first monitor repair before I was a member of this board. The picture below is taken from my tutorial on overclock.net...

• Bi-polar capacitors

Haven't been able to find any discussion on these (although momaka has proven my searching skills are lacking).

Few years ago lightning struck real close to the house, the lights dimmed and the only casualty was the router (Linksys wrtsl54gs). Well, capacitors and soldering were scary and I had no clue how these things worked. So with a lot of time, but not a lot of knowledge, I learned about bi-polar or non polarized capacitors and soldered one of those in with the same farad value (I knew at least that much).

Pic related it is the router that has been working ...

• Re: What's *your* latest mess-up?

I needed a new cell phone and my little sister wanted the latest iphone 4, so she gave me the old one. The battery on the thing was terrible and I ordered a new battery off ebay. After letting the iron heat up a bit, it still wasn't melting the solder very well. Well I kept turning the temperature up and burned that solder point right off the iphone logic board.

Didn't even try to fix it from there and used an old motorola flip phone until I was due for an upgrade.

• Re: Half rule broken

I found another source for that same info sheet:

I've hit something of a wall however, the dimensions on these sheets do not match the dimensions of the caps I have.

Specs on my blown caps:
820uF
25v
10mmX20mm

Closest match on the spreadsheet is 8mmX20mm

Overkill doesn't sound like a bad thing, any reason I shouldn't just replace these with Rubycon 820uF 25v ZLK 10mmX20mm that are available in the badcaps store?

@momaka - I did get the other monitor back, looks...
