That was the problem I encountered; trying to obtain caps that could actually fit on the PCB of my Antec. RS (australia) at the time had nothing that could physically fit. Even the Samxon were a tight squeeze.

The Caps I was supplied by BigPope (I think it was) are still going strong in another PC since 2006 - thats 5 years later.

All volts are still better than they were from factory with the Samxon caps.

Would it have been possibly quicker to obtain results by recapping a few PSU's with the above caps?

Only once have I had caps let go on a mainboard which was around 3years old.
When it comes to PSU's alot more appears to go wrong a lot quicker.

I thought I'd update on how the Samxon caps have gone in my Antec 380w I recapped back in ~Dec 2006.

Its been around 1year 3months and its still going strong; still the same solid rails.

On that note I've recently had a separately purchased 6month old Antec 380w pop a motherboard; no caps were leaking and no visible damage inside the psu. It simply decided to over volt on the 12 and 5v rail of which blew holes in a few chips of the motherboard and killed a hard drive.

How old is the Antec PSU?

While your there crack that open and ensure there's no leaky caps.
I've recently recapped my Antec Truepower 380w that came with my Antec Sonata case bought many years ago.

Incase you haven't recapped before I've found the easiest and cheapest method is to use desolder wick, a flux pen and the usual soldering iron and flux core solder.

Remove the old cap, shove the desolder wick over the hole and poke the tip of the iron through the wick and in to the hole. It should suck all...

Not sure how the 2 drivers reflect in the real world but I recently bought a Seagate II NCQ drive that in HD Tach performed just as well. :S

Why careful on the -5 and -12v caps?

I was concerned with those big arsed nasty 200v caps sitting inside the psu giving me a boot.

I left the computer disconnected from the mains for 24hrs.

Pulled apart the psu and got the multimeter on those caps. They had almost no charge.

Throw a multimeter on your PSU to rule that out.

two tone siren.. My NF7 has done that before when changing voltages in the bios and when it had a stick of DOA corsair ram.

As others have mentioned..

1. Check the psu under 100% load with a multimeter. (google there's plenty of good diy guides)
2. Memtest - Check that ram out. Loop test 5 over night and then test 8 the following.

If all checks out. Well, I'm stumped. :P

I recently had the odd stability and cold boot issue (it would revert back to fail safe cpu speed with a 100mhz bus), it was my trusty antec psu.

Recapped the psu *thanks to Joe for the caps* and now its all 100% solid.

I've checked with a multimeter... All rails are slightly over what they should be apart from the 12v which sits around 11.96-11.98 at 100% load.

I received the caps last Tuesday from Bigpope.

Recapped the psu only minutes ago and its all looking good. No more cold boot issue, the 5v and 12v rails are back up.

Excellent.

I have an 8RDA3+ that I recapped due to fluctuations of the VDD and then finally the VMEM. The video also started to show funny colours. :P

Looking at the center of the board around the AGP slot. All those large caps were replaced as mine where slightly buldging with some leaking, the large caps around the mem were also buldging slightly so they too were replaced.

I didn't bother replacing the caps around the cpu as they appeared to be ok.

I'm just about to recap my Antec 380w thats only a couple of years old.

So seeing its swollen leaking caps I thought I'd rip the 250w psu out of my linux box thats been sitting there working away for many years. I bought a cheap case/psu back in 2000. So its 6yrs old.

Its a Deer PSU, ripped it open and wow, it looks bare compared to my antec.

I expected to see leaking swollen caps everywhere but was dissapointed. It looks to be in pretty damn good shape considering it sits in a non-aircon room that can get up to 40degree's during summer. All voltages...

Those 200v 820uF capacitors..

What size resistor do you all suggest to drain the cap? I've been doing a little reading and don't really want sparks flying. :S

Playing with the PSU is actually pretty darn dangerous. :P

I'm not well versed when it comes to capacitors or any electronics to be honest. The Antec PSU I have runs 2 x 200v 820uF caps. The power here is 240volts, I'm assuming Antec runs 2 x 200v caps instead of 1 more expensive 400v cap?

I just had another quick look.

It appears they are HP3 Hitachi AIC / Boston AIC caps.

820uF 200vdc.
