Re: DV6500, no, it is not the video chip.
What I do is take off all the plastic sheeting and actually rinse the board in pure boiling water (Aquafina works well) and let it soak for 5 min, rinse again, then with an air compressor remove as much as possible, sun dry on warm days. If not sunny. Rinse with Acetone (pure, not nail polish remover) The acetone will dry additional alcohol as well as evaporate quickly. But a heatgun on low will also help.

The address for MAXIM is http://www.maxim-ic.com
Usually they will send you one or two for free, or just get the 'evaluation kit/sample part'Re: DV6500, no, it is not the video ...t/sample part'Re: DV6500, no, it is not the video chip.

Re: Back to the Gateway MA6 M465-E again
Check for voltage on the diode Anode and Cathode. The jacks in Gateway can have a broken post right at the elbow bend that leads into the mobo. These are tricky finds, looks good but still broken. Usually the lead into the motherboard looks good, but no power there. Not a big difference between MA1-2-3-6-7 series DC IN.

Re: Acer Extensa 4620-4605 laptop bad cap
Good Find Severach.
A shortcut I use to find parts that are over heating is to get a simple Crayola crayon and stick it on the part. The crayon melts at a low temp but hot enough to find the short. Another way is an ohm meter in Resistor mode or Diode, will show very low resistance 0-10 ohms when caps should be ~500 ohms one way and infinity the other if it is a bypass cap on a MOSFET circuit.

Re: Dell Latitude D830 - No power
In that model it is common for the DC jack to have bad contacts, cold/bad solder joints, and generally on the positive side because of insufficient solder wicking during the wave solder in manufacturing. And cannot draw up enough current before the contacts lose connection. Another thing is that the inside contacts that connects the barrel of the power supply to NEG often have metal fatigue and not a tight fit, so as soon as the current rises (turning on peripherals).
When things went Pb-Free, no one considered the additional...

Re: New Members - please post your introductions here
Well not exactly sure of how to introduce myself. But I call myself "The Laptop Doctor" since I have been doing things that no one wants to touch. Having been in Electronics since age 9 (yes 9!) starting back on Tube type TVs and advancing to RF and micro electronics. Degree in digital electronics, languages, graphic arts and other things that I no longer do. Working on anything from Enterprise/Challenger shuttle electronics, MX missles, Aegis class navy cruisers. Even hybrid IC's. Additional details on my blog (that...

Re: Gateway MA7 laptop won't charge or run off of A/C
Thanks for the props- The bypass usually works when you either take a thin small gauge wire directly from the post to the diode legs (both legs are common) and then attempt power on. Otherwise the most common problem on them are broken post directly behind the jack, and not really visible to naked eye....

Re: vcc-core shorted
The DV6000 series is a generic number. Please provide accurate information on the model. There may be an answer. It is on the bottom on the white sticker. DV6500 series is a lot different than DV61xx, DV62xx etc Some times the problem is not even in the power section or DC in.
