Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1
My current machine is a mix of killer deals and free stuff. I've got an asus rampage iii formula for free, and I bought a 1070 from a coworker for 200 CAD. I'm running a 980X with 24gb ddr3, and it's booting off of a samsung 950 pro nvme drive.

Re: Help me find a replacement power supply!
I dont have a roku, I enjoy recycling stuff. Buying new is the last option.
I'll clarify; I'm going to use it for torrents, watching movies off the HDD, and all manner of seedy streaming websites, as well as legal ones....

Here's a pic of the blown cap. There's also two with slight bulge at the top...

Re: Help me find a replacement power supply!
I opened the Macron PSU because it was making noise, and found some leaky/swollen caps. If I dont get it recapped, I'll probably cut the rear facing panel and drill some holes so I can mount a modern PSU.
Oh really? That's pretty cool, I just got this case and psu from my local computer shop when they were scrapping a bunch of hardware
As for use; Playing/streaming 720p video. Maybe fightcade as well for arcade emulation. that's it.
You have valid concerns...

Re: Help me find a replacement power supply!
Ah yes, I have run into that as well. I would absolutely buy that if I had an on board video solution that was compatible with windows 10. Unfortunately theres no support for an onboard radeon x1200, and if there was it's 720p performance is lackluster
Yeah, I'll probably have to use the psu that fits as a donor bracket, as converting a regular psu backplate to fit will be a hassle. I can also cut an old side panel of a case I dont care about, I've got lots of those to spare.

Re: Help me find a replacement power supply!
Yeah it's an oddball form factor from days long past. I saw an image in google with a graph showing psu dimensions, and I thought it was "slim atx", though I cant find that anywhere now.
Looks like I'm gonna have to fab an adapter plate for a more modern cpu, as I'd like something in the 500+ watt range

Re: Help me find a replacement power supply!
AM2+ Phenom X4 9950. I was going to use 4x4 ddr2 sticks, but for some reason they stopped working after a bios update
it's not, it's skinnier and longer, and an ATX PSU does not fit into the case, see attached pics...Last edited by Skunch; 09-22-2020, 05:58 PM.

Help me find a replacement power supply!
Hey everyone, I'm trying to find a suitable replacement for this old "slim ATX" power supply. I have an old case in the slim ATX form factor that I want to turn into a home theater PC with "new" (not that new) parts, however the power supply is quite under powered, only about 300w. The make and model is a Macron Power MPT-301
the dimensions for the PSU are as follows:
155mm x 120mm x 85mm
Does anyone know of any compatible power supplies that would fit?
I've attached some photos so y'all can see...

Re: Tool Recommendation: soldering iron and hot air station
Wow, this is really helpful! Looks like I'll invest in a hot air station down the road, but for now I'm probably going to grab the KSGER T12, though it's going to be a while before I buy it, money is quite tight right now.
Thanks for all the information everyone, I'm not buying for about a month or so, if anyone wants to add any suggestions, please feel free to do so!

Re: Tool Recommendation: soldering iron and hot air station
Thanks for the replies everyone, I recycle and refurbish computers as a side gig and hobby, and I'm looking to expand my skill set beyond playing with the adult lego.
I'm looking for a something simple, with serviceable parts. The two features I am looking for are soldering iron/hot air and temperature control.
I'm pretty sure it's a paint stripper. I mostly use it for removing stickers and decals, I have warmed up some boards with it, and tried to cook some bad gpus with it, but...Last edited by Skunch; 09-12-2020, 01:34 PM.

Tool Recommendation: soldering iron and hot air station
Please let me know if I'm posting in the wrong sub forum, but I am looking for any recommendations for a soldering iron and hot air gun station for my workshop. I've been using a garbage plug in wand i found years ago to do quick patch jobs, but I'm finally done with it.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

Re: YDD Light Saber repair
C5 now consistantly reads 15 and then drops 14.5, and C6 is always 60, and then drops down to 59.5, both are measured on the 200 ohm scale
I plugged it in to charge over night, but it still doesn't work, no excessive heat or anything. I had all the parts in a box with foam I'd be surprised if I damaged anything, so this is likely something I did wrong? or maybe the cable is finally broken? it still reads 5V at the barrel plug, which is wierd, but I can't get a read on amps. I'm gonna try and patch the cable and see if I can get...Last edited by Skunch; 08-05-2020, 12:05 PM.

Re: YDD Light Saber repair
So I took it to my local electronics repair guys, and they treated me really well. he looked over the whole board and probed everything on it, fluxed and reflowed all the components and he replaced the resistor an equivalent part. you can see the finished work in the photo attached.
He also deduced that the repeating button static noise is due to low battery, when he hooked it up to his power supply and provided 3.7 volts, it would never glitch out. he lowered the voltage and it started making the noises again.
The U5 component...

Re: YDD Light Saber repair
Yes, C5 and C6 are on the 200-Ohm scale
I've attached a pic of U5 and U4, it's hard to read, but some characters are stamped into the top. it appears to read "LTH7"
U4 reads "8002B" and "CJCJ1V 1"...
