• Dlink DNS-321 NAS - No power

Hey everyone, I picked up a older D-Link DNS-321 NAS unit without a power adapter last winter and I finally ordered a replacement Jentec JTA0512 power adapter.

The adapter just arrived recently so in some form of excitement I plugged it in and to my dissapointment, the DNS-321 unit doesn't power on.

I brought the adapter and NAS box to work for my 12 hour shift and started to strip it down and try to observe what could be wrong.

After doing a successful capacitor replacement on an iMac using this great forum, I feel that I can identify a blown/faulty...

  • Re: Repairing old iMac G5...a few chunky caps

I trust the opinions here obviously, I was just curious. The kit on badcaps is there and I'm sure if it didn't work, it wouldn't be sold.

I did place an order and now the wait begins :-)...

    Topcat, thanks so much!

But I am curious, is the ESR and rated ripple current rating the same as the old ones?

I'm not doubting you or who put that kit together, but I was emailing with Chad from digikey and he couldn't get capacitors that matched the MCZ ESR, Ripple rating and volts....

Thank you Stefan for the clarity,

I at first didn't see how you knew the ESR and ripple of both capacitors, but using google to search them, both caps that I identified are the same with that information:

    http://www.thecapking.com/1000168.html

    http://www.thecapking.com/631800.html

    Rated Ripple Current: 2350
    ESR: 12

So back I go on digikey to figure out the capacitors.

    Initially when I...

Thank you both. Bear with me as I am a bit new to this.

Using Digikey, they don't have any capacitors when I select:

    16v 1000uF

Am I doing something wrong? I don't see what I would be, I just select the capacitance and voltage-rated and I get 0 results :-(

In regards to the 6.3v 1800uF capacitor, Digikey only shows 1500uF and 3900uF...nothing for 1800uF.

I am guessing that since its a capacitor and it just hold the electric charge, that a larger uF would still be fine?

  • Repairing old iMac G5...a few chunky caps

Hello everyone, i'll do my best to explain my quandary.

I am trying to repair my wife's older 20" iMac G5 (powerpc) unit as she tends to use it sometimes as a desktop for light browsing and such.

I did end up buying another identical iMac as her's for parts as I broke a cable and it was cheaper to buy a whole system than just the cable.

I took both units apart as I am aware that these units tend to overheat, have PSU issues and capacitor swelling.

The original iMac we have, it was made in the USA back in 2006. The spare unit I purchased...

  • Re: Dell Powerconnect 2716 - PSU issue?

    Thank you Redwire.

I searched and found kits online that people sell to fix this PSU but they don't list the detailed specs on the capacitors. Would it be safe to look at the ones I have and would they identify what voltage or size I would need?

I would understand heat causing it, but sometimes the switch will be unplugged for days/weeks and it still won't power on. I don't even use it in a full out network or production network. This is a toy for my home since I am in working on my certificat...

  • Dell Powerconnect 2716 - PSU issue?

Hey everybody, I am not certain if this is the correct place to ask but I have a Dell PowerConnect 2716 gigabit switch that I received from an employer that works and dies every so often.

When I got it, the switch didn't work so it sat on my shelf. I did open it and inspect the capacitors and they looked fine. Nothing seems out of place inside.
I eventually hooked it back up and it worked. It worked for a while then one day we unplugged the power and it didn't come back on.

Just today I hooked it up to try to test it and it powered on as if it doesn't have...

  • Re: Gateway FPD2185W - what caps to use?

I've done the homework as far as I can, I was just wondering why he was using two different specs for the main big caps then mine, but then again I didn't think of the manufacturer changing things around in certain revisions.

I'll have to order the replacements for what I see inside of mine

    edit: just placed order for:

    P10247-ND CAP 470UF 16V ELECT FC RADIAL
    P10271-ND CAP 220UF 25V ELECT FC RADIAL
    P10275-ND CAP 470UF 25V ELECT FC RADIAL

    I've ordered...

I have a question, I've been told above not to replace the 2 larger 68uf450v capacitors, but while browsing this thread I came across this post:

  • Gateway FPD2185W - what caps to use?

Hey everybody, I have a FPD2185W that my friend gave for me to fix and I've seen the link Digikey.ca come up a few times to order replacement capacitors.

Now I am far from technical when it goes with electronic components so I'm not sure what I have to order from them.

The main power board as you guys know has 8 medium capacitors, and 2 big ones.

All seem to be labelled as SAMXON, which has had a past history of bad caps.
There are also 3 smaller capacitors on the display board.

Now, the 8 on the power board, 7 feel bad by touching...
