Re: EMPREX LM1905 Screen Repair
Quick response before I retire for the night (why my days end between 3 and 4am is beyond me lol).
Shovenose - glad i'm not the only one :-)
Retiredcaps - Thanks for that information and quick response. And yes, i agree, if it was a repair for my own use i'd be replacing all parts I'd even suspect of misbehaving. But this is for another of my private customers with a middle man involved
I do prefer to fix things properly, but the screen was due back to its owner today so no time was left to order any further...

Re: EMPREX LM1905 Screen Repair
Those to the right of the photo are still on there way to me by post from a different supplier, hopefully they will appear tomorrow.
I've replaced the others in sequence of the larger caps (still faulty), then the 2 smaller ones (fixed, yippee), and was a bit eager to let others know.
Looks like that side of the board has a whole load of dodgy components?
Thanks for noting that though Shovenose, I should have mentioned it in my original message. I shouldn't type at 3am ...

EMPREX LM1905 Screen Repair
Hi, and I hope i'm putting this in the right part of the site, please shuffle it around if i've made a mistake
An EMPREX TFT screen came to me for repair, so I'm hoping this info will help somebody, it was a straight forward fix, but may help somebody with several models of the same design.
The screen was doing the usual thing, of switching on for a few seconds, then off again. The display never lit up at all, though the power light came on green for the 2 seconds, then back to yellow for Stand-By mode
On most of the screens I get to fix, I...

Re: Ffffffffffuuuuuuuuuu!
Another attempt by Microsoft to stay in the running and play games with societies pennies.
Unique has said it exactly as it is up there - if it can be coded, it can be hacked. Anybody who fully understands security, software languages and the logic of protection, will be chuckling away again at the suggestions of this protection.
Give it a month or 2 and there will Windows 8 portable copies floating about with patches for this, that, and the other
Such things are only a game to those who love to break codes,...

Re: New Members - please post your introductions here
Hi, my names Phil, from the middle of the UK.
I found this site by chance while searching for some details on a specific laptop I was fixing (Gateway MA7). Although i'm more versed with general electronic repairs rather than finding faulty caps, i'm glad I found this place, i've read a lot of useful messages here.
I'm a self employed computer engineer, and deal in any repairs, and software engineering sometimes. And i've just started to get into reflowing now, but that's all a bit trial and error...

Re: Gateway MA7 laptop won't charge or run off of A/C
As far as I am aware, the MA3 is just about the same as the MA7, but maybe the none-UK version ?
If you could take a close up clear photo of your own power/socket area of the board, somebody should be able to point out where you need to solder It's a main thing in trying to give any guide on this subject, any blurry or low resolution photo makes it risky trying to see where to solder as the boards have so many slight variations - just the manufacturers keeping us all runnin round in circles ...

Re: noisy power from Viewsonic LCD screen 12V SMPS
Hi. I'm not sure of the actual problem you're having on this one on this one, but i'm assuming that by saying you want to remove noise from the display itself? Possibly a very slight blurring or shimmering of the picture ?
If that's the case, it's possible that the fault is on the actual board at the rear of the screen, and no amount of other changes will affect it
As a wild stab in the dark, i'd say . . . .
Check the screens menu, and see if you can alter its phase settings from in there,

Re: Gateway MA7 laptop won't charge or run off of A/C
Wow, i'd lost my link to this posting/site, just found it again by chance and I see it's been busy here
I will leave a few answers, just in case it helps somebody again later. . .
And well done to everybody who's had success with it
Moneypit - you only need to replace your socket if it's actually broken, but while you have the board out, it's often best to replace it as a matter of course - if only to make sure.
I check my own sockets by attaching a meter to a power plug on...

Re: Gateway MA7 laptop won't charge or run off of A/C
Bnash01 - Can you clarify a little, How do you know that your battery is fully charged ? The best way is to test on a fully working 2nd laptop if possible.
Although a laptop may show the charging & fully charged lights, and may even take an hour or more to charge, the battery can still be faulty (broken circuit or dead or weak battery cells), and it may never be able to start the laptop up again.
From what I can see, it does sound as if your battery is at fault. There is also a very slight possibility...

Re: Gateway MA7 laptop won't charge or run off of A/C
Hi Chris (Comitatus1), glad the details helped a bit. There does seem to be quite a few slightly different types of these boards, so I think it's gonna be a bit of self-logic on the wiring eh? Good thing that mosfet is so big and easily findable. I've gone through 14 of them so far, all worked so far
Good point on that mentioning of the voltmeter - just for anybody trying this kind of thing for a first time, i'd suggest doing that too.
Grab 'any' voltmeter (digital or analogue type), and just check the...

Re: Gateway MA7 laptop won't charge or run off of A/C
Hello everybody, I was browsing the net to see about this MA7 problem, and found this forum. After seeing the original message left by BTMMIKE, it confirmed what i'd been wondering about - the silly design of POS pin on these sockets, added to a bad design where it goes thru the board, means it does indeed wear a bigger nasty hole in the contact.
The very small photo showed me just what i needed to see, and believe me this is a simple repair
I've attached 2 photos as clear as I...
