Re: HP BIOS unlock tool

The end of the story: I bought a pre-programmed BIOS chip on e**y, the seller sent me 2 pre-programmed chips (main and spare) and also as an alternative, the main chip with the unlocked file from my last post. I tried at first this one and it worked!

So no idea, what was exactly my problem, maybe there were more than one, but finally it worked

Thank you for all support and for the unlock tool!

Re: HP BIOS unlock tool

Hello all,

sorry to bother you again.

Yesterday I tried it again:
- soldered the original chip back: laptop worked, I could boot W10 from the SSD
- desoltered again and connected again to CH341A I could finally read out the content without any problems, so now I have a dump
- created an unlocked bin file, programmed it to the new chip and soldered onto the mainboard: same problem, the LEDs of the caps lock and num lk buttons blink several times, the fan goes on, then the laptop "restarts" again...

Aren't there any suggestions? Is the mainboard finally bricked or is there any possibility to recover?

The blink code says "BIOS corrupt". I tried to do a BIOS recovery using an USB drive as described here https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c02693833, no chance Re: HP BIOS unlock tool

Re: HP BIOS unlock tool

Hello all,

I'm back and try to remove the BIOS password from my EliteBook 840 G2. Here is a short summary of my previous activities:
- I tried first to read out the BIOS chip using a clip, no success
- I desoldered the chip from the mainboard and tried to read the content using different tools with a CH341A programmer and using flashrom with a Raspberry Pi 4. I've never got the same content, there where always differences, in the area between 00EB6000 and 00EB6FF0
- I've been adviced to buy a new chip and to flash this...

Could you please tell what you did exactly?...

OK, thank you, I'll try it! Now I must only figure out, where to buy the new one.

Re: HP BIOS unlock tool

But the chip worked well with the laptop, the only problem was the password.
Let's say I would buy a new chip, which data I should flash, as I'm not able to get an appropriate dump? Simply the latest BIOS version from the HP web site?

Something new: as mentioned somewhere in web I added a decoupling capacitor between VCC and GND. I used 2.2uF or 10uF. There are still differences in the same range but lesser than without capacitors. A hardware issue?

So, I did it again... Using Raspberry Pi 4 and flashrom, same problem, differences at 00EB6000. Any other suggestions?...

Re: HP BIOS unlock tool

I did it, more than one time, using different versions of the SW listed in one of my previous posts. See the screenshot for AsProgrammer v 2.0 mentioned in the topic 188....

No wires at all since I've soldered the chip directly to the programmer PCB which is connected directly to a USB port....

Re: HP BIOS unlock tool

One thing I've recognized is: last dumps, created using desoldered chip and SW except CH341A Programmer 1.29 which is suspected to be buggy, differ only in the area between 00EB6000 and 00EB6FF0. Is it possibly intended to be different for some special purpose like encryption or something else?...

Thank you for your advice! I've tried it using AsProgrammer v 2.0 and found by the way many threads in different forums about the same problem as in my case:

Re: HP BIOS unlock tool

Hello again,

I desoldered the chip (is a winbond W25Q128FV) and try to read it using am CH341A Programmer and a test clip (https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32716202129.html)

I have read the content of the chip 4 times and got 4 different bin files. Under these circumstances I don't want to risk the total destruction and to try to flash the file generated by the removal tool. Can you possibly recognize my problem? The files are partly the same but some areas...

Soldering is not my favorite activity, but desoldering is even a nightmare for me. No chance to get it working in place?

I do not have any other copy. But the HP still works, so maybe this is only an issue with the programmer? How do you recognize, whether a copy is OK?

Re: HP BIOS unlock tool

Hello all,

I'm new to this forum. Before I've registered I've read many instructions how to recover the BIOS password on my HP EliteBook 840 G2. I bought a CH341A programmer, connected it to my PC and set up the SW. I was also able to back up the HP BIOS (I hope at least so) and to run the HP remover tool from the top post. But after I flashed it back the password still remains. I'm not sure, which step fails, maybe you could have a look at the attached files or provide me a password free version.

Thank you in advance!...
