    Re: New Server

So what is the new server built around (motherboard etc.)?

oh awesome. With the vents they seem like lytics. I have a fujitsu scsi drive that is 8 years old that still works after almost 24/7 operation(no there is no important data on it just some mp3s. I only have it for nostalgia and to see how long it will last). they build good stuff. My confidence in this motherboard just went up 1000%. thanks guys.

  • Mystery caps on intel se7501cw2 xeon board

hey guys. Anybody know what these are. there is no name. The photo isn't the clearest but there is a little symbol that looks like an F with a a little line above and belove it. Its that fuzzy thing above the temperature rating. Has a sanyo style vent. This one has me stumped. Very curious. since there is no name its impossible to search. haven't seen it in the badcaps list.

forgot to attached the nameplate photo. this is a 700 watt powersupply and is the server version as opposed to the workstation version which is psl-6701p....

  • Naked Zippy psl-6700p. You'll wanna see this. Efficiency numbers too.

Because it is exceedingly difficult to find good pictures of zippy power supplies, and because the build quality is so breathtakingly beautiful, I decided to disrobe this Zippy and take sexy shots of all its glorious internals. Things to note. I won it new on ebay for 80 dollars shipped (nobody else bid, WTF). All UCC caps and the largest rubycon primary I have ever seen. Picture doesn't quite do it justice. Its a full inch in diameter. It is powering a single xeon 2000 on an intel se7501br2 and it is consuming just 2 watts more than a seasonic unit (even though the name plate says its a full...

  • Re: ATX Connector Pins

agreed. I have been searching for this info for awhile too. though not very seriously. I bet you have to order like 10000 at a time too. Which shouldn't be that expensive. I'll start looking again and see what I turn up.

  • topcat, what kind of caps on intel shg2?

I am interested in buying an intel shg2 for a new server project and I see from one of your posts that you have two of these in faithful production for years. I'm very curious what kind of capacitors are on these motherboards. Are they tantalum (which have apparently been banned by sun microsys)? Site doesn't want to let me post a picture now it seems, but a yahoo picture search turns up some good shots (as well as a current ebay auction) if anyone else wants to chime in. I like the board specs but I have never seen square caps before that look kinda like small black scrabble pieces. Thanks for...

  • Re: is less or more 12v rails better.

each rail is rated at 15 amps except one which is 18 i think(going off my memory right now). I figured the overload issue was the only downside. the way the cables are cut it forces you to send 1/3 to the 5.25 bay and 2/3 to the 3.5 bays so as to distribute the load right.

I will definately post pics of the case and the dissassembled power supply. I just need to get some damn sata drives to make a raid 5 with the 3ware card I have and this year long quest for a fat file and dns server will be done. (it helped that I finally landed...

  • is less or more 12v rails better.

can someone (where are you willawake), give me the quick and the dirty on single rail vs multi rail power supplies. I see many high end supplies like zippy's have a single 40+ amp 12v rail. the 600w delta that came with my new server case is built like a beast with all chemi-con and ruby's but it has 4 12v rails. I know this is an intel spec that many manufacturers don't like because it adds expense and complexity but is it actually "BAD"?

ps. I will throw up some pics of this delta when I can. I was really impressed by the engineering and build. considering the case is...

  • Re: 80 plus rubycon's on one board!

ive seen supermicro boards that say designed in usa made in taiwan(not in person mind you, only in pictures). thats what this tyan board says too. all the intel boards I have had have been made in taiwan (only two).

are sanyo ca's ok. sanyo of course has a good reputation but the ca's on this board seem a little lower quality than the wx's on one of my old dual p3 tyans. I still cant believe all the blue and gold on this board. cant wait to get it up and running and get some good pics. trodas will probably warn me that my poor...

thanks gonzo, That was what I was thinking. its interesting to note that ultra low esr caps are not always good for motherboards :-)

  • Re: 80 plus rubycon's on one board!

yeah. tried out vista release through work. it was the full enterprise version which is basically the "ultimate" package. I've already switched back to xp. vista is gonna be big trouble for microsoft. of course big trouble for microsoft isn't really that big a deal. they will get over it. it definately looks pretty, but I don't like much else. the registration is so invasive and stupid. I should start another thread.

linux is gonna make strides now that they are trying to put together a standard platform. biggest issue...

  • Re: 80 plus rubycon's on one board!

thanks willawake. I knew you'd have the answer. I suspected it was a "good" practice. It's actually only a 533fsb e7501 chipset. no noconas for me. I'm going to put a single 2.0 xeon (55watts) and 1gig of registered pc2100 in it for my home file server. mobo, chip, and ram will come out to 155.00 all together, off of ebay. a real deal. of course I already had the server case and Zippy ps. Oh yeah, I still have to get some drives to go with my 3ware 9500s sataraid. I'm a poor ass college graduate looking for my first real job (anyone...

  • Re: 80 plus rubycon's on one board!

most are mbz. I'll check to see if the others are zl. board will be going into a 4u case so heat/ventilation will not be a problem.

what about the fact that they used so many small capacitors? is that a good or bad practice? that was my main question. board has twice as many caps as a similar intel board.

also are the ZL's officially on the bad list or just this isolated instance. thanks again.

  • 80 plus rubycon's on one board!

    hi all,

I just purchased a tyan i7501 s2721-533 new off of ebay really cheap. It is a dual 604 xeon board. I had come across this site awhile back while looking at power supplies so I know what to look out for in general when purchasing stuff. Anyway I was really reassured when I could see from pictures that this board had tons of rubycon's. OK so I get it in the mail yesterday and there are over 70 mbz's and about 20 others that are another rubycon line(can't remember name) and some sanyo's. this is all good. I'm starting to wonder though, you can see from the picture that there...
