  • Re: hp 8760w wont turn on blinking led after replacing bios

Attached is a picture of the BIOS chip on a different laptop (exact same model). That cap looks the same on both motherboards. The BIOS on both laptops were affected by the same virus....

It doesn't appear to me that anything is touching the chip but I have attached a picture....

I should add that when I am occasionally able to try to boot into Windows 10 (which fails due to the sudden shutoff), I see a message that says "ME state is in recovery mode" in case this is important to know.

  • Re: hp 8760w wont turn on blinking led after replacing bios

I recently had a virus that corrupted my BIOS on an HP EliteBook 8760w laptop. I bought a ch341a programmer and flashed the BIOS numerous times. I did not have a clean dump from this machine so I have tried pretty much every dump shared in this forum for this laptop. Some dumps don't allow the laptop to power on at all (charging light just blinks). The last two shared in this thread have "occasionally" allowed me to get into the BIOS setup. Once in the BIOS setup, the laptop soon shuts off on its own and tries...

  • Re: HP EliteBook 8760w Disassembly Question

Thanks for the link. The video shows the removal of the bottom metal access cover but does not show the bottom of the laptop case being removed. Unless there are some kind of special hidden tabs that need released, I'm thinking that the motherboard will need to be removed through the top keyboard side....

  • HP EliteBook 8760w Disassembly Question

I have the service manual for the HP EliteBook 8760w laptop. I don't see anything that mentions that the bottom plastic case of the laptop can be removed by itself. After taking all of the screws out of the bottom of the case, the bottom doesn't appear to come off. I am trying to get more clearance around the visible BIOS chip to flash it using a ch341a programmer clip without having to remove the entire motherboard. I'm thinking that (unless plastic is removed around the chip possibly using a nibbler) that the motherboard may need to be removed from the top of the laptop. I don't need a lot of...

  • Re: HP ELITEBOOK 8760w bios needed please

Attached is an image of the model of my 8760w motherboard if this is important to know. I am not certain which exact build my motherboard is:

    652509-001
    SYS BD 4 DIMM

I don't have a full dump of the good BIOS because it is corrupted. I am deeply grateful for your help and have hope that I can get my computer running again.

    Thanks again....

  • Re: HP EliteBook 8760w BIOS Chip Location?

When requesting a full BIOS dump (in the BIOS Requests thread) for the 8760w, is it necessary for me to specify the exact series build of my motherboard?

My motherboard has a label on it near the DIMM slots that shows this model number:

    652509-001 SYS BD 4 DIMM

When looking for schematics for the 8760w, I have seen that there appears to be at least two version builds of the 4 DIMM board (there could be more I suppose):

    AEROSMITH_6050A2438301_PVR-Build_A01_20110311_4-DIMM_MB...

  • Re: HP ELITEBOOK 8760w bios needed please

Hello all. Could someone please assist me with a BIN file of the very latest full BIOS for the EliteBook 8760w? The most recent revision (F.66 Rev. A) was released on Feb 22, 2018 by HP here (but I think this may be just a BIOS update and not necessarily the full BIOS in itself):

    I am still waiting...

  • Re: HP EliteBook 8760w BIOS Chip Location?

Thanks for the advice. When the battery or power supply is connected, the fan kicks on for a few seconds along with all of the LEDs (with nothing on the display) then shuts off and continues in this loop until power is removed. The BIOS on a second identical 8760w was affected by the same virus and exhibits this exact same behavior.

So you are saying that if pin 8 doesn't have 3V VCC available then the BIOS chip is dead and should be replaced?

Thank you very much for the confirmation. I am aware of the tool needed to flash the BIOS and have already ordered it.

  • HP EliteBook 8760w BIOS Chip Location?

Greetings to you all. I need to replace or re-flash the corrupted BIOS chip on an HP EliteBook 8760w (Quad Core version). The BIOS was corrupted or erased by a nasty virus and the laptop will not power on at all so the Win+B key combination doesn't work to do the emergency restore of the BIOS. Where is the BIOS chip specifically located on the motherboard? I think that it may be the 8-pin chip located near the external battery port and memory slots on the bottom of the laptop (as seen in the picture) but I am not certain. I apologize that I am not yet very experienced with reading motherboard...

Hello all. I am an amateur computer enthusiast who is self taught in general computer repair. I am interested in delving deeper into more technical aspects of repair, namely troubleshooting and fixing issues related to computer motherboards. I came across this great forum and see that it is really a great resource with lots of helpful folks participating. I'm looking forward to participating and contributing!
