  • Re: The badcaps you hate hate hate most...

I would have, but the polls were limited to 10 options. So I picked the most visibly crappy ones.

For me, it's GSC. I swear, I see more exploded GSC caps than any other. Any board with GSC's on it is guaranteed to be a horrorshow within a year. Argh!

GSC - If you're reading this, then you!

The pic is a Jetway 830CF that I'm recapping for my brother - it's destined to be a playtoy for so his daughter can play all her little Disney games. ...

Well, that seals it. I'm recapping this router. Thanks for the replies!

Alright, here it is. I scaled the photo size down but you should still be able to see it. I can't determine whether these caps are a known bad brand or not. The router works, but it will periodically lock up and stop routing packets....

  • Anyone ever seen these caps?

I've got an older Asante FR1104G router cracked open as it's out of its warranty period. It was always flakey, even the ones sent back as in-warranty replacements. There are 16 identical 47uF 16v caps with a strange branding. They are black with white lettering and the brand logo is a lightening bolt with a stylized "SC" next to it. I've got some Nichicon HE's left for this project, but I was curious if anyone has come across this specific brand of capacitor before.

  • Re: Soyo Dragon Cannot Restart After Shutdown

I have this exact motherboard with this exact symptom. It *is* bad caps. The 3300uF 6.3v Sacon caps surrounding the processor have all failed - but only one is bulging slightly on top. Some of the Sacons will fail silently and not show any visible signs of leaking. I'm in the process of recapping this board with Nichicon HE's/Rubycon MBZ and I will update once it is completed.

  • Re: Are Sparkle power supplies good?

I seem to have 2 revisions of the same Sparkle Power unit. The FSP300-60ATV has 2 large Rubycon 680uF 200v caps. The rest of the caps are OST, Teapo, and Jamicon. While not great, they're not as bad as some others I've seen. The other one is an FSP300-60BTV which is full of Teapo, Tayeh, and split Fuhjyyu's. Of the two units, try to get the "A" revision. I think it was created before the beancounters got a hold of the design at final manufacture.

    Re: Mallory?

I'm going to recap it *again* with Nichicon HE's when my order from Mouser comes through. They're backordered on the 1000uF 10v and 100uF 25v until the end of January! Ugh. I just have to be patient and just recap with the pieces that I have right now. I'll have to wait on the rest of the caps when they come in. I think the problem is that I used some IC CKE series caps where I shouldn't have. I don't think they're low-esr, or at least not low enough.

Is UCC LXY series ok for the large 3300uF caps near the processor? Any experience with the IC KXM's?

    Re: Mallory?

Well, the Albatron board I have *is* a POS. It's a KX400-8x which has given me no end of grief. Try downloading a BIOS for this board from Albatron's website. The version numbers are so screwed up I have no idea which one is correct. I've tried them all, the board rejects all of them.

Being the first board I've recapped I'm bound to have done something wrong. The 3 large caps are now United Chemi-Con LXY series. The rest I replaced with Illinois Capacitor KXM series low-ESR though I *may* have used a couple which weren't of a low-ESR series. Maybe...

Thanks, I'll break out my soldering iron now!

Sort of related - I have an old POS Albatron motherboard I've been using as a test piece for recapping. If some of the caps aren't low ESR types, what kind of problems might I expect? Just general flakiness?

    Mallory?

I have a bag full of Mallory SEK series caps in 4.7uF and 10uF, both 50v rated. Would these be ok to repopulate a pair of currently non-functional soundcards? Are these of low enough ESR?

  • Re: Are Sparkle power supplies good?

Just tossed my Sparkle Power 300w unit today. I noticed that my system was randomly rebooting, then failing to post unless I unplugged the PSU and plugged it back in. Well, I've migrated to a faster system and decided to crack that bad boy open. Lo and behold, it was littered with swollen Tayeh's and Fuhjyyu's. Normally I'd just recap it but some of the caps failed in such a way that one of the large resistors overheated to the point of splitting. The heat jacket was peeled back like a bannana. I figured if it could be heat damaged there must...
