  • Re: Sceptre x22wg-Gamer 22" LCD

Well, I got my new caps in today and replaced them and my monitor now works perfectly. Another success story due to all the great help on this site. Thanks much to everyone, especially retiredcaps, and keep up the great work with the site.

Thanks very much for the link, but I'm neither an electrician nor a mathematician, so I have absolutely no clue what those pdfs are talking about. This is my first time messing with anything on a circuit board and the only reason I considered doing it at all is because it seems like a simple fix to desodder some caps and sodder new ones in.

Since the specs are fairly easy to find and compare online, I don't have nor need a full understanding of how it all works and the details of everything listed in those pdfs. Really I just need...

Yeah, I can't actually find the exact cap for capxon that I'm replacing. The one I'm looking at is 10mm wide rather than the 8mm mine is, but everything else seems the same so I went with that.

Also, what I was referring to about there being separate columns is when you actually use the search function on digi-key. Most of the ESR ratings are blank though in the listings as are many of the impedances. The ones that do show both ESR and impedance have different values in each column, so they aren't the same thing it seems.

Ok, so ESR and Impedance is the same thing then? When looking on digi-key and mouser it lists the ESR and Impedance in separate columns so I just assumed it wasn't the same thing. I did see the term used interchangeably on a few posts here on the forums, but when I googled it I couldn't find any information regarding what the difference was between the two terms, if any.

So now that raises another question (of course ). That post says only around 30% lower is normally acceptable and the change between the two I'm looking at is...

Ok, I was out of town for a week or so for the holidays. I'm back now and about to try to order the new caps I need. I found a near perfect match for the medium caps I listed earlier on the thread, but it has a lower impedance by quite a bit so I wanted to check first and make sure it would be okay to use. I browsed the threads that retiredcaps posted earlier but couldn't find anything about what acceptable amounts were for impedance differences between original and replacement caps.

My original cap is 1200 ripple and .076 impedance...

So since the smaller one has plenty of height to play with, a 2.5 or 3.5 LS would be okay to use as long as the uf and v and the other dimensions match?

I did assume that the Ebay sellers did that, but since I can't seem to find anything compatible in stock, if they have it ready to ship I would rather spend a few dollars more and go ahead and get it than to wait a month or more. I will definitely get detailed specs though before I go that route since they don't have it listed on the auction page. It just says it's...

    The 8 medium sized caps are 8mm wide, 16mm tall, 470uf, 25v, 3.5mm lead space, 105c temp.

    The 1 small cap is 5mm wide, 11mm tall, 33uf, 35v, 3mm lead, 105c temp.

I've looked on both sites you listed and can't seem to find either one that has exact matches for them. Digi key's closest height is 20mm on the medium sized equivalent and that will be cutting it way too close for my taste. They would practically be touching the case. I did find on Mouser one that's almost exact in the panasonic FR series, but 15mm height instead...

Does the height include the height of the leads that go through the board also or is it just the height of the actual capacitor itself? On digi-key there are none that match the dimensions and specs of my capacitors. The one I was looking at earlier is 4mm bigger in height than my capacitor measures but matches in every other way, so that's why I was wondering.

Wow, I can't believe I didn't think of that. I'll do that shortly and get it all typed out.

Well that poses a slight problem atm. I can't seem to find anything here that measures mm besides a protractor and the way it's shaped won't allow me to measure the height of them from the board. I'm going to have to remove them first to measure them, but I can tell just from the lead spacing that the small one I found isn't the right one and it's the only one they have at the right uf and voltage in the FC series.

Now that I know I can look in other series for that one though I should be good. Once I get them all out...

Yeah I did all that, I just wanted to be sure it's aluminum since there were so many capacitor categories to choose from. Is it okay to mix and max different series between the medium and small capacitors? It seems they don't have the FM for the medium sized ones but only FC, and the only FC one they have for the small doesn't match the size of mine...

As I'm rather new to this I'm not sure, but the page you linked said to choose aluminum. Is it assumed that's the category I will need as well?

Great, thanks again for all your help retiredcaps. The "repair kit" I found is something like $13 and has all 8 of the medium sized capacitors and the small one, but it also doesn't list the exact brand or series that I will be getting. I will check out the site you mentioned and price it out and if I do go with the ebay kit I will be sure to verify first with the seller the exact ones I will be getting. It does state that they don't use capxon, but only Panasonic, Nichicon and Rubycon which are all recommended on the link you gave...

The original ones are CapXon. Mainly what I'm asking though is that if bad capacitors alone could cause the problems I described in my first post, and if replacing them would fix it....

  • Re: Sceptre x22wg-Gamer 22" LCD

Ok, thanks much for the quick response. Would you be able to answer the question of whether or not bad capacitors could be the sole cause of the problem that I listed above? That is really my main concern as I am short on cash atm and I can't really afford to fix it and it end up being something else that caused them to have a problem. I have a multimeter but I don't have and can't afford an EST tester now either. I'm pretty sure though based on this post that the capacitors are bad due to the bulging, and the kit I'm looking to buy has all of...

Ok, I'm new to the forums and to repairing things like this so please bear with me. I found this thread which seems to cover my problem. My monitor is a x22wg-1080p and the power supply board is almost identical to the one shown in the pictures of the OP.

Every one of my capacitors besides one of the larger 8 and the one smaller one are bulged on the top as shown in the pictures of the OP. Also, the metal in the casing and the metal on the back of the actual LCD is discolored from what looks like overheating. I am thinking about...
