  • Re: SMPS Controller IC and Diodes

Hey Longbow. Ill do this in bullets, make it quicker.
[LIST][*]PSU was fine before I blew up three diodes to excessive soldering heat. I still measured the IC and VCC to GND is 2-3 megaohms.[*]Cool, even more info on the startup behavior.[*]I checked those resistors when I started examining the board. They're 33K each and in sereies.[*]Not messing around at all, only trying to find suitable replacement diodes.[*]Everything messed up is on the primary side.[*]Im guessing you didnt check the images. Theres no caps on the PSU at the moment.[*]When...

Alright cool. Thanks for the confirmation. Ordering some 15V and 5.1V zemers. For the regular diode, I'll try a 1N4148. Also, never thought of the light bulb in series, I'll try that.

Alright cool, I was guessing all along a good zener voltage for the VCC zener. According to datasheet 13.5V is the VCC turn-on threshold, so 15 volts sure as hell wouldnt hurt. It didnt hit me until you replied, that 10ohm resistor might be the R(start-up) resistor. The current sensing resistor is actually on pin 3, a grey through-hole. Now for the zener 5V1, is that 5.1V or part of the part number?...

  • SMPS Controller IC and Diodes

Hey folks, sorry for my lapse of attendance. I've been off computers because of my dead PSU on my main machine. Too much drama at home, and too many projects to build. This PSU has been on the backburner since mid-December, so yeah.....I need my PC gaming fix.

Last few days I've been pouring over the datasheet for the SMPS controller IC my PSU uses. Its an Infineon ICE2A0565Z. My last thread was about suitable replacement caps for my Corsair HX620, which is really a SeaSonic M12II 620. When I was re-capping my PSU, I had the iron at 400C, which I learned was up to 50C higher...

  • Re: Woo! Rework!

Good to hear you put a hot air tool to good use. Once I get the hang of it, I'll be fixing peoples consoles and phones. Hopefully this thing doesn't die on me. I have a feeling I will be voiding it's warranty very soon. I still have that damn buyer's remorse. It's probably because the hot air wand is just about a hundred bucks, and finding hoof and flathead tips for my velleman iron is a PITA.

  • Woo! Rework!

Hey folks, haven't been here for a while. Dead computers and crappy snow kept me off the keyboard. So I finally got to buy myself a rework station. I think its a rebadged Gordak, but it's supposedly called X-Tronics. Got some buyer's remorse because I was planning to get a hot air wand like the Aoyue 8032++. This one I managed to get for $130 comes with 9 extra solder tips for the iron, 4 nozzles, has a spare element for both iron and hot air, and a small fluorescent lamp. I already gutted some defective ram with it and it sure as hell works. Hopefully it will last as I've heard these cheap-o...

  • Re: Sceptre x22wg-Gamer 22" LCD

I'm going to have to check the logic board after the cap-swap on the lcd's psu. Really hoping this POS screen will work or I'll have to crush my associate's jaw for blaming me for it's death, even though it's been dead 3 years. Surrounded by tools I am (the human kind).

You know what....I have a slight buzzing from my Acer too. I may have to do this too.

  • Re: Corsair HX620

So I got off my ass and finally ordered all the caps I need off of Digi-Key. Now I just sit here fidgeting until I get my caps. I chose caps with the next highest voltage rating, but some I had to go two voltage ratings up to get the same capacitance.

  • Re: Corsair HX620

Wow I'm a real genius, I forgot to check the series datasheets themselves. Coffee, coffee, coffee, coffee........

Alright cool, I'm glad I was using impedance at 20C to pick the caps. Little by little my mind's getting back to electronics.

  • Re: Corsair HX620

I definitely compared ratings but unfortunately all 3 links I posted don't show ESR, but do show impedance and ripple. I'm not sure if there's a formula to find ESR or it can only be measured. I'm really hoping low impedance for these caps is good along with ESR.

  • Re: Corsair HX620

Thanks bones, I'll be grabbing a pair of the LXZ 50v-68uf. As for warranty, I broke it as soon as I got it because I absolutely despise fan grills. My cpu cooler and psu don't have grills. To me, they take away some air flow.

  • Re: Corsair HX620

OK folks, I'm browsing now for some exact replacments to all the Chemicons on my Corsair HX620. I'm tempted to replace the large input filter cap too. This psu was running every day for about 3.5 years, so it wouldn't hurt to change all of them. I understand completely where you are coming from PCBONEZ, I've always kept the mobo and cpu on my mind besides the psu. It will cost a few bucks but at least I get the "lytic" variable out of the equation, eh? I wish I had some extra cash for an ESR meter and hot air rework station. I'd test every cap on the...

  • Re: My new CPU Cooler

Speaking of coolers the TT Frio is very tempting to me. I got my friend a Cooler Master Hyper N620. Its a damn good cooler for the price of $40. Has two fans from CM with rifle bearings which make 'em quiet. Theres a whine coming from them, but its drowned out by all the fans of the 1200 case.

  • Re: Corsair HX620

Well RAM is ruled out since I have three pairs of sticks. I have an OCZ "vista upgrade" 1gb pair, a faulty pair of Corsair DHX 2gb, and a brand new pair of A-Data 2gb.

All of them passed Memtest86+ with no errors after several passes. None of the ram have been through overclocking. Somehow the Corsair DHX pair always crash my system stock or overclock. Their voltage is 2.1v on the label, and even then they cause bsods and crashes. The other two pairs of ram I would run at 1.8 or up to 2.1. They were pefectly fine at 1.8v.

    My...

  • Re: My new CPU Cooler

Hahaha zip ties. Yeah I'd use them only temporarilty with the system on its side. Maybe even have a 5 pound weight of some sort on top of the cooler. My buddy's recent custom rig has that case. Enormous beast but nice enough of room to work with. Routing of cables is paramount unless you like jungle vines. That cooler looks very useful, the base seems a bit too wide but other than that, looks very OC capable.

  • Re: Corsair HX620

Well I've been looking even more this time with a loupe. MKQ series is the input lytic while the output filters are KY series. I find it really annoying when there isn't some tiny logo or lettering to give away the maker.

PCBONEZ: Yeah I'm conflicted about my hardware, so I'm planning to use a PSU my buddy has for his 3-month old I built for him. If theres any powering down, yeah....I'm gonna be super pissed. I didn't go balls-out on the overclock.

  • Re: Corsair HX620

My overclock is simply going from 333 to 400mhz. For the life of me I can't figure out why going past 400mhz would prevent POST. Oh well, a 1:1 ratio made me go ^____^

I'm pouring over all the caps on the board. I'm coming to terms that they're Nippon Chemi-Con....possibily KY series? I'll update. Wish I had a camera I'd post my PSU on here.

Edit: I dig your response time, you must not get enough sleep, huh?

  • Corsair HX620

    Yay! Insomnia! *cough*

Simply put, if I should play a demanding game, or leave my pc to idle for hours....POOF system is down. The first time this ever happened, my system would power cycle with "ON" being less than one second. The system would power cycle reasonably fast, so I pulled the plug quick. Now the system would shut down suddenly, but I can power it back up. First three things come to mind: either thermistor is brainfarting, some components are actually breaking down, or the fan was too damn slow. What sucks is I already have this guy disassembled right in front...

  • Re: Reflecting on a cap-swap...

I guess I didn't screw up so badly eh? After reading about all the computer psus and capacitor details I guess I'm good. From what I gathered the psu in the lcd doesnt have wildly changing loads like a psu for a pc would.

As for the values of the caps....I think (keyword: think) all of them were available on Digi-Key. There wasnt any cap so far out of volt/cap range. My Corsair PSU is another story.
