Re: Are some components spot-welded to the MBs?
250ºC is too low while 500ºC is too high. You need to find the sweet spot.
~400ºC + lvl 7 air flow is enough for laptop and desktop boards most of the times but the ideal temperature depends on your location weather, air humidity, etc.
Also, the oxidation level of the board and components can influence the desoldering process.
The best way to find out the right temperature for your rework station+location weather combo is to test soldering on a scrap board. Never on a good one!!

Re: Toshiba C50D-A133 - one problem after another
It's possible to recover those pads or jump the IC with some patience and skills (and a microscope, OFC)
What temperature do you use on the rework station? Are you using good flux? Some PCB may require lower temperatures and using good flux is mandatory to avoid such "accidents".

Re: ASUS ROG G751JY randomly shuts down
Are you able to run and complete full load tests without shutdown? If so, then overvolting may not be the issue.

Re: ASUS ROG G751JY randomly shuts down
ROGs are well known for being shipped with voltages set extremely high in BIOS factory defaults and undervolting VCORE may solve auto shutdown issues most of the time. Not sure if this is the case here but it is one of the fixes you could try.

Re: X550CC no PWM for +VGFX_CORE
+NVVDD 0.9V is OK. Technically, the range is 0.6v~1.2v.
The absence of +VCCGT (VGFX_CORE) may be normal on boards with discrete graphics.
If all voltages are OK then can be really a BIOS issue or a bad EEPROM. You can try flashing a known good BIOS to a new IC to see if it makes a difference.

Re: Asus Gl553VW turn on no windows boot
Ordering the full rail is kinda overkill...as we are not sure yet of the issue, but no problems with that, as the parts can be useful for other repairs in the future.
5v and 3v seem ok in the board. Try cleaning the TPS51225 with IPA and ESD brush and re-do the measures.
Also, I don't think the board would be able to run and complete memtest from USB in a faulty 5v rail (TPS51225). But repairs can be tricky sometimes and I could be wrong.
You have not answered yet if you tried to boot from...

Re: Asus Gl553VW turn on no windows boot
For 19v rail the cap needs to be above that voltage, otherwise it won't handle. The same applies for all other rails.
If you know the rails of the spare board then you could pull a capacitor out from the 19v, test with MM and then replace. Otherwise, better order a batch of that specific cap online.
But before start making orders, make sure you tested everything according to boardview. Double check if needed.

+AC_BAT_SYS
Do you replaced the cap with 10uf/25v as specified in the boardview or with a random one?

Check that capacitor nets in boardview... maybe there are other damaged components.

Re: Asus Gl553VW turn on no windows boot
If you are able to boot OS then you can try undervolt CPU via software to check if it's related to CPU throttling.
Here's a guide:

Flash this one and check if there is CPU Configuration in Advanced Settings....

Ok. I'll look into it.
Is this BIOS text mode or it has graphical interface as the picture attached?...

Ok. If you have a full BIOS dump I can take a look in the advanced settings.

Re: Asus Gl553VW turn on no windows boot
Yes. You need to flash a full BIOS image... and no, I don't think CPU is broken.
I did some research and I found that auto shutdown is a common issue for ROG laptops due to CPU throttling.
Do you have voltage settings in BIOS?

Re: Asus Gl553VW turn on no windows boot
I forgot 1 step for the basic checks. Power up the laptop with the keyboard disconnected from MB (short pins 25+26 on keyboard connector to power on). I know it may sound silly but a faulty keyboard can also cause shutdown issues.
Other than that, all voltages seem ok and as pointed out by @piernov, +VCCGT behaviour may be normal in this case and it will kick in only when demanded.
What I would try now is to backup the ROM and flash another known good BIOS. Try flashing the original BIOS IC first and in case it doesn't...

Re: Asus Gl553VW turn on no windows boot
+VCCGT should be 0.55v~1.55v
I found a boardview for GL553VD, wich looks very similar, or maybe they are even the same board.
Open it with boardviewer and check L8004 and L8003 rails. Check if there is 19v on pin 8 of U8004 + U8006 and if there is voltage on pins 16 to 26....Last edited by Smoxx; 02-19-2021, 11:48 AM.

Re: Asus Gl553VW turn on no windows boot
.
+VCORE - coils 2+3+4 on boot its 0.97. as soon windows loads it jumps between 1.1 and lowest 0.3 (voltage is OK and that's normal, it will vary according to CPU demand)
+VCCGT (Intel GFX core) - coil 1+5 is 0.01v (missing or disabled by GPU?)
+VCCSA -coil 6 is 1.05v - OK
+BAT_R - coil 7 is 14.2v - OK
+1.35VO_VGA - coil 8 is 1.37v - OK
+VCCIO_O - coil 9 is 0.96 - OK
+1.2VO_DDR...

Re: Asus Gl553VW turn on no windows boot
Good!
There are 3 coils missing (those near the GPU. They seem to be covered with thermal compound, maybe glue...)
Also check the voltages in the 560uf polymers and the 470uf tantalum in that rail.
Please also check the voltage of the two 470uf tantalum in the +Vcore rail (coils 2+3+4)

Re: Asus Gl553VW turn on no windows boot
Let's try re-check some basics first.
1)What is the exact laptop model and hardware specs (board revision, CPU, RAM, etc)
2)Does the shutdown occur regardless of whether the device is powered by PSU or battery?
3)Is the PSU original? Have you tried with another one?
3)What about the battery? Is it original? Is visual inspection OK? Have you checked the voltages?
4)Has the device been repaired before? Has the BIOS been reflashed?
In what condition...
