Do yourself and your vision a huge favor and don't treat lasers lightly, I would never recommend powering on a blu ray drive wtihout its case unless you were wearing frequency-deleting eyeware designed around that laser.
It's unlikely to blind yourself with a reflection from something as low powered, but you can never be too careful....
