• Re: ASUS GL552VW shutting down randomly.

@cha0swaver133, you have done a good job of eliminating all the common problems.

If you have more time to work on this, some things that you can try are:

1) voltage glitches - that cause any of the power-good (PG) signals to go low. This is usually hard to diagnose, especially when all the different PGs are tied together (open drain) and fed to EC/PCH. You could monitor the signal (at EC/PCH) and see if it transitions low. Although the problem is to find out if the PG transition is the cause or the symptom

• Re: Dell Precision 5530/XPS 9570 no reaction

Before you change the PCH. Do you have a pin pwrbtn on the PCH ? How does that measure ? Driving that low momentarily should transition from S5 to S0(fully on) Also after a wake up event, if you keep driving the PWRBTN to ground, the system should go to S5 and restart. Doing this exercise should show if PCH is still alive or at least some part of it . Also can you check for clock pulses on the spi clk pin ? The PWRBTN should be handled by SIO, did you check the firmware for that ?

Good luck

• Re: Acer Aspire 4830t, help with diagnostics PLTRST impedance

[The rabbit hole deepens]

Hi All,
Apologies for getting back late. Thanks to Piernov and Sephir0th, I have removed the ethernet controller but the behaviour is the same. I went back and updated with a couple of different BIOSes available on the Acer website. But the behavior is the same, - ` no screen (no backlight) and no beeps.

I went a little deeper and looked at the spiflash transactions. I can see that the CPU is executing the ME code and then follows the reset vector and executes...

• Re: Acer Aspire 4830t, help with diagnostics PLTRST impedance

HI,
Thanks, I did try and removed the controllers one by one from the PLT_RST rail and of course, it is always the last one that was bad. In my case, it was the ethernet controller which was given PLT_RST, but luckily there was a jumper (0-ohm resistor) that I could remove, and bang PLT_RST is high impedance. So after soldering back Super I/O (yes I could have removed it last, but I didn't), I could see the board booting, PLT_RST going high, and DDR3_RST also going high, but not a whole lot of progress after that....

Thanks Sephir0th. I just wanted some confirmation, before I start removing more ICs on that net. I can see an ethernet controller, USB3 controller on the net which I have still not removed. I will do that now and see if that helps. Thanks a lot for sharing your experience, gives me more reason to remove the components

• Re: Dell Inspiron 5570 / LA-F115P AC Adapter not detected

Thanks for the measurement. So it checks out that the UT7 works for discharging - charging a device. Did you try plugging a usb-c fast charger (not device) to the laptop to see the other way around ? In that case does the BIOS report anything different ?

• Acer Aspire 4830t, help with diagnostics PLTRST impedance

Hi All,
I have interesting diagnostics experience, with Aspire 4830t motherboard. All the voltage rails are up (except for integrated graphics, which I think happens later in the boot sequence). The PCH_PWROK and DRAM_PWROK are asserted. I can also see PCH reading the BIOS and fetching (and executing) the ME_Firmware. But I don't see PLT_RST# being deasserted (I always see it driven logic low). All conditions seems to be correct for platform reset but that signal is never driven high. Out of desperation, I changed the CPU and still see the same issue.

Out of curiosity, I...

• Re: Dell Laptop - over 14V between Chassis Ground and Circuit Ground?

Not sure, looks like the ground is floating. Could you check the negative terminal at the board for dry joints ? Also try attaching the negative terminal to the USB metal housing or similar. Given that it boots fine, I don't think the motherboard is faulty. There are lots of other negative terminals like the copper on the board surrounding screen holes etc.

• Re: Dell Inspiron 5570 / LA-F115P AC Adapter not detected

Sorry I could have made it clearer. I was trying to reply to your question on whether UT1 (CYPD4125) is faulty. You might already know this, but for the sake of clarity - The main function of UT1 is that it does power delivery (PD). The chip itself is an ARM-based microcontroller with flash and ROM. So to check if this chip is working, the best way I think is to exercise PD, like charging through a USB C or charging a fast-charging capable phone, and see if the chip (UT1) can do fast charging.

Hi, With laptop booted up, can you exercise any PD bits to see if UT7 is working ? (like charging the laptop using the USB c cable or charging a device like phone through the USB c port). The OVP_TRIP_P1 is active low so in normal case this should be driven high but I understand you have seen this signal low ?.

• Need boardview for Acer Aspire 4830t

Hi All,
I am debugging a motherboard that turns on but fails to boot. I believe the CPU is not getting out of reset and I can see ME firmware getting executed (Cougar point PCH). The platform reset (PLT_RST#) is asserted and I don't see it going high (out of reset). From the PCH data sheet I can also see SUS_STAT# signal and the motherboard diagram shows a test point but unable to locate it as there is virtually no silkscreen. More details can be found here, https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=110647

The schematic says it is compal la7231P. If anyone...

• Re: BIOS request for Acer Aspire 4830t

Thanks @Mazorca. That makes sense.

@Peste. Thanks for the BIOS. Unfortunately, I have tried this flash ROM and it is the same as the one I have downloaded from the Acer website (the latest BIOS from this list https://www.acer.com/ac/en/ID/content/support-product/3635;-;). With this BIOS flashed, I can see only the power LED coming on and the boot does not seem to progress as far as the original BIOS.

Thinking about the next steps:
Maybe I should choose the oldest BIOS from that list and give...

Thanks, I will try with the attached BIOS. Regarding the DMI, do you reckon I should replace the contents of this bios (starting at 0x18_1000, size 8K) with the original BIOS ?

BIOS request for Acer Aspire 4830t

Hi All,
I am troubleshooting a laptop booting issue. The motherboard in question is Aspire 4830T-2313G32Mnbb. When I press the power button, two blue LEDs light up and the fan spins for a few seconds. There is no beep or backlight seen. I can see that the BIOS is accessed. I tried with different RAM slots and different modules but no change. The board does not have a graphics chip or VRAM populated so it should be using the integrated graphics (Intel i3). Also, I have tried plugging in an external monitor and nothing is on the screen.

I have tried flashing another bios from...

@OP did you see Vcore or not, sorry got a bit confused. What about other rails for PCH or AMD hub? Details of the processor, PCH (chipset) would help.

The super I/O chip (or called Embedded controller) is the one named ITE in the diagram above. I cannot figure out the number there, but you should be able to get the pinout of the chip (even from a different motherboard circuit diagram which uses this chip) and find out the VCC pins. Good luck.

• Re: Asus z87 pro back USB ports not working suddenly

Hi,
Can you please post the number of the isolator ICs ?

If you are adventurous, you can switch the same IC from a working USB port to the non-working one and see if it works. Another option is to take the D+ D- (for USB2) before the chip, connect to a USB connector and see if there is any communication.
