  • Re: Faking CCFL inverter

It is hard for me to tell from the picture but if I was going to solder directly to the inverter I would make sure it is the two solder pads that are soldered to the two output pins that the lamps plug into. Both of my lamps were bad on the bottom of my HSD190MEN3. The lamps were both broke in half close to the solder points of the input wires. But what I am doing is using the wires from the bad lamps to put my resitors to and then just plug that into the inverter. If I can get this to work and work safely I will post pictures. The Capacitor thing is interesting...

  • Re: Faking CCFL inverter

Hey Bill thanks for the reply. I had a typo, that was actually 130k 2watt resistors, not 160k, sorry. Just had them lying around and since two in series was close to the 200K you had mentioned earlyer I thought I would give em a try. So I think I will try adding the other two for a total of 4 in series to see the result, more like seeing if the heat dissapation is better. I will let you guys know later. I then should have 8 watts in series if I read your answer correctly.

I tried soldering some new lamps in place of the old ones, but when...

  • Faking CCFL inverter

Hey guys I was reading an earlyer thread on substituting a risitor for a ccfl lamp in a computer display.

Here was Plain Bill's example:" Ohms law. At a rough guess a CCFL runs at 650 - 1000 Volts and draws 3-5 mA.

    E / I = R or 800/.004 = 200Kohms

    I X E = P or .004 X 800 = 3.2 watts

So a 200K ohm, 5 watt resistor hooked to an appropriate connector should do it."

Ok so my measurements were somewhat different. One lamp leg was 260 Volts and the current draw was 7.5 mA.

    E / I = R or 260/.0075 =...

Hey I think. What a good deal on the monitor Th3 and to be able to turn around and double your money real easy. Sounds good to me.

I understand what you are saying. Testing the new caps they show .25 esr but appear to want to go to .10 so some whare in between. In other words, solid led lit up at .25 and some flickering at .10 the Cap Analyzer does not have reading lower than .10 esr. If you know what I am trying to say. I don't know if that is considered low esr. Maybe they will do in a pinch but I will probablly be replaceing them as soon as I can get them.

Hello, not sure japlytic how to read the old caps. Elite ES(M)105* C (c)0720 PET printed on the side of cap.

The new Panasonic caps. 85*C M. Butt 35v instead of 25v. Oh wow I did not even realize when I bought them that they were lower temp caps. Maybe they will hold up.

jetadm123 the esr tester is Cap Analyzer 88A. Not sure about modifying but when purchased just about 1 month ago assumed that they would come with fresh batts. They use 4 AAA.

    I-inc cy199d

    Hello, to all.

I have finally repaired one of the displays that I was working on.
I had low batteries in the Cap Analyzer and did not know the results I was getting was miss-leading. The low battery warning finally sounded. So I replaced the batts. Next checking some previoully removed caps I reallized that the Cap Analyzer batts had been low for a while. The caps that had previously had tested near good were now testing bad with high esr.
Wow how long had it been that way. What a difference the new batts made.

The display had three bad bulging caps...

  • Re: Elo TouchSystems ET1915L - how to open?

Hey thanks for the help offer tmcw if I come across something that im not sure of output voltages etc. I will ask and I will be specific as I can. I have yet to scrounge up the camera to take some shots. Maybe this week end. It's hard to do some of this stuff with work and all. Any way I wish I was snowed in and could concentrate more on this stuff. Take care and stay warm.

Amen to all that. I had repaired 4 Dell monitors that work was throwing away. Sold those to someone who had some friends that use tons of monitors in thier business. They had had theese lying around for sometime and asked if I wanted to take them on.
    So. Here we go!!!

Thanks so much Retiredcaps for posting the link to (2 second to black) I will definately use theese guidlines as I attempt to repair the displays. I do have the Blue Ring meter and if I am using it correctly I feel that the transformers are indeed bad. I am not a professional service repair tech. I do not have a business repairing electronics. I am just a hobbyst learning as I go. With my learning curve it takes many many hours of repetitive do over and over again tasks untill concepts and understanding starts to take shape. But recently...

  • Re: Elo TouchSystems ET1915L - how to open?

I have a few of the ELO touch screens to repair model ET1915L. have managed to open a few and have come to the conclusion that the inverter board is bad on some. But are haveing a hard time locating the board. I also found one with bad transformers just before the plugins for the ccfl lamps. Could not locate a suitabel replacement for the transformers. The inverter boards are Sampo by make and are arranged with duplicate circuits on both sides. I have my 12 volts and 5 volts comeing in from the smps but the transformers do not seam to...

  • Re: CapAnalyzer 88A EDS review?

I also have the CapAnalyzer 88a. I like it alot. I am no expert and have only owned it for about 2 months. Have tested hundreds of caps and so far I think it is doing a good job. I like the fact that it discharges the cap before it tests it. I have tested a lot of caps that were 220uf and above that did not peg all the way to the top of the graph. Usally just 1 led below the top. Some times if I do not have a replacement I will go ahead and leave that cap in and usally the device will still work like it should.Maybe that cap is starting a decline...

  • Re: Cos6100m oscilloscope

I own a Kikusui COS6100M 100Mhz scope. Paid $160 at a local Ham radio fest. I probablly paid to much. I really like the scope worked good when Nutralizeing the tubes in my old Kenwood hybrid rig. I made some probes for it. But eventally decided to buy a cheap set for $20 bucks on ebay. The factory made probes work much better. I have'nt really learned to do a lot with the scope yet, but enjoyed using a teroid core wraped with wire to wave over the transformers and see them oscillate on the scope. You can really see nice oscilatting pattern if the transformer...

  • Re: cy199 i-inc showing blue and yellow led only when connected

I have sucessfully used Chip Quick to unsolder SMD components. It is a solder with a much lower melt temp and mixes with the solder on the smd. Once it is mixed in it stays molten for a long time and alows the chip to be removed and cleans up easy with paste flux and isopropal alchohal.

  • Re: Hitachi 37" Plasma TV

Hello, I also have a Hitachi Plasma TV that is dead. What internet site had the replacement kits for the power supply board. My board is also a Murata, but MPF7404 for 42" plasma. I have removed 2 HV Mosfets that I believe to be bad. I hope that is all that is bad but there will probably be more.

  • Re: New Members - please post your introductions here

    Hello everyone on the Forum.

I would just like to say that I am in my mid 40s have not too long ago got into electronics thru a love for Ham radio repairing a 70's ventage Kenwood Hybrid Tranciever. And various other things. Now recentlly I have started repairing LCD monitors mostly bad caps on the SMPS of those monitors and got my confidence up and took on about 20 touch screen LCD monitors for a couple of friends that use a lot of monitors. Maybe byting off more than I can chew but are finding that most of the...
