Beckman Industrial/(later Wavetek) Digital Multimeter DM27XT Repair
Was testing to see if a bug zapper grid voltage (=< 2800VDC) had discharged yet. Set meter to highest range (1000 VDC) and probed across the grid. Heard an audible arc so voltage must have discharged into something in the front end of the meter. Now all functions that use the V-Ohm/Com input just reads "OL" (over range). Even the continuity test with the probes shorted reads OL with no beep. Opened it up and found input resistor R31 47 ohms, completely open. Replaced with new resistor but meter still reads "OL". The low battery icon on the display is visible even...

What exactly is the circuit failure mechanism?
Hello All, first post here. Maybe it's because I never did much consumer electronics design, always commercial so if I needed a big power supply cap it would usually be tantalum or the larger value ceramics because they had superior filtering performance. And assuming these big electrolytics that fail are power supply filter caps, but from what I have read, the failed caps capacitance usually goes down while the ESR goes up. Now if it's a power supply, those caps are in parallel at the power supply output to reduce ripple voltage and supply local circulating currents to the load circuitry. So...

Re: New Members - please post your introductions here
Assuming this is the right place to post my introduction. Semi-retired electrical engineer for about 40 years. Mainly analog and DSP for communications and control. Started tinkering with flat screen TV's recently. Hope to learn more and eventually contribute.
Thanks,
Mark O.
