• Re: Source for screw kits?

It's not similar enough, unfortunately.

I /did/ look around ebay as stated in the first post, and I didn't find anything close enough. For the specific unit you posted about it's (at least) the different GPU, bottom hatches, etc. That's at least 8 screws right there. There's two different GPU heatsinks for the g50v depending on the options you picked during purchase, so there may be a difference even within that general model number. Hence the search for a schematic of some sort as well. =P

Thanks though.

Source for screw kits?

I have a laptop that I just finished repairing (after five months..), and now I'm having issues locating a screw kit for it. Previous owner / friend had taken it apart and lost a great number of them.

Asus wasn't much help- They told me they don't have any contact with their repair centers, and do not sell the screw kit / have a part number for it. A schematic would also help, but I was simply told 'good luck.'

Anyone know of a place that does all of the above? I've come up with nothing so...

Finally got the parts and the time.

Installed the new parts and bam, laptop will now POST.

Problem is, there's still a bunch of missing screws from the previous work done to it. Now I have to track those down.

Right. I know updates exist- Just wondering if anyone has had experience with them making the unit a bit less noisy.

I didn't see anything specific to that in the update release notes, unless I totally missed something.

• Re: Your Best Dumpster Finds

Just acquired a Dell PowerEdge 2650 from the side of the road.

Sounds like a jet engine, but works perfectly.

2x Xeon 2.4ghz (400fsb)
6gb ECC DDR
2x 36gb SCSI 160 HDD's
Dual-ethernet add-in card (making it a total of four ports)
CD-Rom, floppy, etc
Windows 2000 Advanced Server (25 CAL)

Heard it may be possible to lower fan noise with a firmware update. Anyone know if that's true? Won't be able to work on it for another week or so.
Good times. :3

After a long vacation (sorta), I've installed the parts. Bam, working perfectly for the last two days! Thanks for your help all!

The SI4392 on ebay have a different number set on the top than the ones installed on my motherboard. Honestly I don't know the difference, otherwise I'd make a decision about that now.

The 8170's are $15 for two, so I can grab those I guess. I'm trying to get this out of the way quick-like, so was avoiding Hong Kong. I've had this thing laying around too long.

Guess I was just hoping for a miracle. lol

Friend came by and dropped off a piece of plastic that was on the motherboard before we started working on it.

Fun stuff. Looks like they were both heated to hell and back.

Think that it's just that one / both were bad? I'm starting to wonder if that's the root of it all or not.Re: ASUS G50V - Fried? Yeah, probabl...HTff.jpg

Well, it shouldn't work. That's assuming you pulled the cmos battery during the recap, which means this step was already redone.

Did you disconnect the PSU from the motherboard while the CMOS battery was out?

Give it 60 seconds or more just to be safe. Just trying to rule out the simple things. It fits the symptoms for a few different problems. This being the easiest one to fix.

I just realized how old this post is. Sorry, didn't see that it was already recap'd. Hrm.

Wow, I haven't seen one of those in a while.

H&R Block used those in their training rooms around here. (or at least they did when I worked there) They're notorious for doing exactly what happened here- Caps go bad, blow out or the thing just won't POST one day. "Desktop" and "Tower" models.

I've only ever worked on two with good caps. 4 training rooms x30 PC's + spare parts closet with ~50+ units. Even when everything looked alright, they still wouldn't POST.

Not sure if that's...

Parts ordered. I'll let you know how it works out. :oRe: Sceptre x20g-NagaIII (x20wc-game... works out. :oRe: Sceptre x20g-NagaIII

Awesome- Thanks for the information. Gave me exactly what I needed.

Though, now that I'm looking around- I can't even find the parts. They're either no-stock, or you have to order 800+ of them.

Is there anywhere I can look aside from digi-key / mouser?

Specifically: Si4392 and TPC8107

Apparently they're EOL. =/ eBay has them, but at a cost of ~$15 each. That's a lot for a repair -attempt-, when I may need more than one of each.

Alright, finally checked for that part, and took photos. (last few days been busy)

From what I can tell, there is only one other instance of a TPC8107. Below is a photo I took showing where on the board it is located, and the few components immediately around it.

Thanks for all your help so far!

Please ignore the numbering. I was going to edit a few photos with more closeups, but ran out of time. Maybe...

• Re: whta's the best life time of a graphic chip reflow?

From what I understand, the power going to the fans isn't regulated by software. It's hardlined at 5v, with 12v rated fans.

The reason most people opt for the voltage mod, is so they can add a fan speed controller. That way you don't have all that fan noise playing in the winter. (my basement is a cool 65F in the winter without the stove running)

Also, solder paste? You mean thermal paste or flux right? Buying solder paste will 100% ruin your board / gpu. Just a heads up. ;x

• Re: whta's the best life time of a graphic chip reflow?

Yeah, apparently reballing can fix the yellow light on a PS3. You're right about the 360 repairs though. $150 is too much, and most places won't do the CPU. 99% of the time it's not needed.

Maybe you won't say it, but I will. The 360's were poorly designed for extended use. (my definition: longer than 3 hours per session, in summer conditions) The newer models are much better, from what I can tell.

Anyhow, back to the point: Reballing is considered permanent. You should seek that out for a real fix....

Reball kits are available through eBay (Hong Kong sellers), along with stencils for more common devices like xbox360 GPU's, and random PS3 components to fix RROD / Yellow light.

The (right) tools to do so make it cost-prohibitive for the average user. That's the killer....

Aha, alright then. Thanks for the additional information.

I'll double check to see if the TCP8107 is used/paired some time tomorrow, then post my results.

Once that's cleared up, I'll place a new order for the parts. (i get giddy when ordering new parts. dunno why. :x)

Thanks!

• Re: Login Problem Win 7 Home Premium - Locked Out

You mentioned blanking, but not the software / version you used. Also note that in the FAQ for this software, there are a few things that could cause it to not work properly. Improper shutdown, random code glitches (poor NTFS support), etc.

There is also an option to lock / unlock accounts. Have you tried that on the administrator account?

There are a few different software sets out there that do the same thing. Was asking to be thorough.

And yes, it seems that you are able to create an account,...
