  • Good news on your successful repair. You are lucky your Chinese chip works because they are mostly fakes. Did you buy the D revision or B revision one? Can you upload a photo of it?

I stopped buying them from Aliexpress and eBay because none of them worked and the markings on the chip had clearly been altered so there was no way to know which version you had bought.

I've not worked on the VSX-1021 but if it uses the same DSP chip it may be possible to patch your firmware with part of the LX55 one. I found that the area that gets erased is 0h to 10,000h. If this is blank, cut and paste that area from my file into yours. It should get it running and then you can do a full update from USB.
If the DSP is the BGA variant it should be warm to touch after a few minutes running. If it's cold then it has probably failed. Reflowing it sometimes works but reballing or replacing is better.
    The other thing to check...

  • Re: pioneer vsx 2021 no sound

As far as I'm aware, the D830 is the same chip as the D810 but it has network and USB functions built in. I don't however know if it can be used in place of the D810 without checking a schematic for a receiver that uses each device to be sure the connections are the same.

The problem with these Chinese supplied chips is you don't know how many hours they've logged before being salvaged and reballed. The extra heat cycles involved in removing, reballing and refitting can't help longevity either.

    The Onkyo TX-NR636 is the...

I assume that was a Chinese supplier since they seem to be the only ones selling these now?

Most claim to be selling 100% brand new, blah blah blah for both B and D versions but these parts are subject to Dolby licencing and only available new to OE manufacturers, so it's unlikely to be true.

The D version is the upgraded part so should be more reliable. I've seen B chips last as long as 30k hours though and start working again after a light reflow with some liquid flux.

    I bought a faulty VSX-53 last year...

That's good news... glad to hear it worked for you too.

I am curious... where did you source your replacement DSP chip? All the ones I've bought from Aliexpress have clearly been fakes or simply didn't work when fitted. The eBay ones I have bought have had about a 50% success rate but were obviously not new as claimed and I'm not sure if they were reballed 'D' variants or just remarked 'B' variants.

The only reliable source seems to be salvaged parts from later model Onkyo receivers but these tend to be worth more than...

Here's a Dropbox link to the file I modified and used to update my receiver.

You can use this over and over because the receiver thinks it's getting a new update but it just reloads the same version.

I'm pleased to hear this file helped with your repair. This is exactly how my first attempt went until I loaded the file from a working unit.

After replacing the DSP you may find Apple Air Play no longer works. This can be fixed with a full firmware update via USB. If you have the latest firmware already loaded, then this is a problem. There is a way round it though by editing the update file to fool the receiver into reloading the same version. Let me know if you need to do this and I'll assist or Dropbox a copy of the modified file...

  • Re: Onkyo TX-NR609 New DSP chip fitted

I've repaired a few Pioneer AVRs with both BGA and QFP DSP chips. Replacing the BGAs is hard to do by hand and sometimes they don't work, even with claimed 'new' chips. Some units have taken 2 or 3 attempts before they work again. The DSP firmware is almost always corrupted from upgrade attempts after DSP failure.

I bought a reballing kit as too but despite carefully placing 256 balls on tacky flux with the stencil I have not managed to complete the process successfully. Either the balls move when heated if the stencil is removed...

    started a topic Pioneer SC-LX56 & 86

    Pioneer SC-LX56 & 86

I recently acquired 2 x faulty Pioneer AVRs, a SC-LX56 and SC-LX86. The 56 was UE22 no audio and the 86 was in DC protect flashing the MCACC LED.

I've fixed both these issues and they both work but after a few days use, both exhibit the same fault which can only be cured by a factory reset. They become slow to respond to front panel and remote controls and eventually freeze up altogether.

After a full reset, both work fine again. I've installed the latest firmware from Pioneer with no improvement. I'm starting to think there may be a problem with one or more of the...

    Re: Pioneer VSX-531

Pioneer AVRs after 2015 are made by Onkyo and have equivalent models.

The service manual for TX-SR373 has references to the VSX-531 so I think the schematic for the amp is likely to be the same.

The TX-SR373 manual is available from ElektroTanya

  • Re: Panasonic 15th Gen 2012/13, intermittent not powering on or standy LED - power ou

Hit a wall with this now...

SUB5V, 3.3V, 1.8V, 1.5V and 1.2V are all present on the A-Board, so all the regulators on there are good. Panel_Main_On is not on, which isn't good.

On the PSS board, STBY5V and F15V are up and the Power Micom U207 has +5V.

The only anomaly is STB5V_SW_ON to the A-Board is at 0V, just like +15Vc_ON and Vsus Vda, which all originate from U207.

I assume Panel_Main_On from the main CPU won't go high unless it sees...

  • Re: Panasonic 15th Gen 2012/13, intermittent not powering on or standy LED - power ou

Looking at this more closely... Vsus, Vda, +15Vc/+15Vs aren't powering up. These all get their signal to start from U207, the PSU micom. This in turn is given the signal to start from the A board CPU via Panel_Main_ON, which is not going high when the set is switched on. STB5V and F15V are both good, so I'm starting to think this isn't a PSU issue.

    Next checks will be on the A Board for IC8704 - SUB5V, IC8705 - SUB3.3V, IC8101 - SUB1.5V and IC8100 - SUB1.2V. I don't think the main...

+15Vc_ON isn't switching at power up at U207 pin 13, which it should be.

The SOS to shut down and flash the led red with an error code also isn't happening, so there has to be something else causing U207 not to switch its output.

I've just been looking at the schematic and Q316 gets the signal to switch on from U207 pin 13, which is also on the back of the board. I'll need to pull the board back out and attach a wire to monitor this.

U207, HT66F30 is a flash memory device, so if it's not switching Q316 there must a problem causing this.

    Found the schematic on ElektroTanya

So far I have +STB5V and +F15V but +15Vc and +15Vs are down at 1.5V when I attempt to switch it on. More investigation required but most of the circuitry is SMT and on the back of the board, so not easy to fault find in situ.

Someone must have seen this fault before on an older model like this?

  • Re: Panasonic 15th Gen 2012/13, intermittent not powering on or standy LED - power ou

I just acquired a TX-P42X50B that wouldn't power on. After reading this thread I decided to just go straight for replacing U203 after doing a few cold checks for fuses, caps etc, as it appears to be the only documented common issue.

U203 didn't fix it and when I attempt to power it up, the front panel led flashes green for a few seconds and then turns to a solid green. Normally this would be a good thing for a Panasonic but in this case the screen stays blank and no sound.

  • Re: pioneer vsx 2021 no sound

The corrupted flash memory occurs when the DSP chip fails or develops bad solder contacts while the unit is in operation or if a firmware update is attempted once UE22 has been displayed.

It sounds to me that you still have a problem with the main DSP, IC9002. I would put some liquid flux under it and reflow it. I've done this by preheating the board underside using a mobile phone heater and then using a temperature controlled heat gun from above for 50 to 60 seconds.

You may also need to perform a full firmware update after...

  • Re: Plasma TVs repair:Panasonic 50"ST50,Samsung 64"F8500

30 series Panasonic plasmas had issues with screws coming loose on the SC boards, causing them to fail prematurely. Later models like yours didn't suffer this due to a return to split locking washers on the screw. It's worth checking they are all done up tight though as loud buzzing was a typical symptom before the SC board failed.

  • Re: Onkyo TX-NR807 no sound problem

I recently acquired one of these TX-NR807 with no audio and the main digital board has not had any of the usual mods... cap changes, daughter board voltage reg or DSP chip replaced.

I started by flowing some liquid flux under Q3001 (DSP, D830K013BZKB300) and reflowing it as I have done with other units that use this chip.

It now works fine, audio out, network etc. This chip was on the TI 'premature failure' list, so it remains to be seen how long it lasts.
