Yeah I was wondering if it was something like that, but it seems odd to have two general purpose cap series in use at the same time.
Unfortunately Chemi Con doesn't make the SM or SL datasheets available so it's hard to find out what the difference is.

Chemi Con SM series?
Hi,
I've got a turntable from the late 1970s that was acting up. It uses a mix of SM and SL series Nippon Chemi Con capacitors.
The Chemi Con website says that both series are replaced by SMG, so that's what I've used in recapping. The turntable is humming along fine now.
I was wondering, what's the difference between SM and SL series capacitors? -
