Re: Lenovo Laptop will not boot
Thanks again to everyone who gave me their two cents about this issue! Just to let you all know I'm still working on it, kinda. I ended up starting to learn more about laptop repairs, especially from a repair shop guy who made a YT channel called Electronics Repair School. It's not just educational though, that dude is really pleasant and funny. If you check it out, enjoy!

Re: Lenovo Laptop will not boot
I do see your point, I'm kinda taking things in the wrong order here huh. Symptoms are still the same as two weeks ago afaik. I'll try to get my hands on the schematics as my very next step.
in other news, I put a new coin cell in this morning; no change, but I got a small stash now ^^

Re: Lenovo Laptop will not boot
By the way, I got a SATA to USB adapter through the mail today, plugged the dead laptop's HDD into an older laptop I have kicking about... all the data is still there. My backup was a bit old, so that's cool.
What's puzzling is, I initially tried to mount that HDD into that old laptop, and it couldn't find an OS to boot from, so I assumed the HDD was broken or wiped blank. Now I'm thinking it might have been some compatibility issue, since the laptop rejected a Win10 HDD and accepted a Win7 HDD. Not a great data sample, I need to research...

Re: Lenovo Laptop will not boot
" really it's in the Atom series"
aah, gotcha
My attempt at a reflow (8 min in an oven at 195°C, 1h to cool down, reassembly) was not fruitful, though it was quite the experience to stick a mobo in the oven. On the coin cell front, I ordered a dozen new CR2032 yesterday, to see if that'll help in any way.
I wanna thank mcplslg123 and piernov again for all the input, I'm learning a lot and may even remember some ^^ anyway you guys may explain how I could go about fixing the PCH not initializing?...

Re: Lenovo Laptop will not boot
I tested the CR2032, the voltage was around 1V! So I changed it with one that showed 3V (not new though). Unfortunately, the laptop still doesn't boot. The 'on' LED is on for about 2 or 3 secs, as before, then turns off. The HDD doesn't make a spinning sound, nothing. I'll keep researching

Re: Lenovo Laptop will not boot
btw, the CPU is actually an Intel Celeron CPU N2840 running @ 2.16GHz (2 CPUs). Still not worth my time, I know ^^

Re: Lenovo Laptop will not boot
Hey, thanks Piernov! Yeah, It's probably not worth saving, but I really want to be able to save my baby. Then I'll chop it up and sell the parts. I already got some PC parts in the mail, I'll be cooking with gas in a week ^^ Thanks for the advice btw, I'll try that right away

Thanks! Sounds reasonable, I'll start with that as soon as I get my hands on the gear I need for that.

Lenovo Laptop will not boot
Disaster struck, in the night between 15 and 16 SeptemberIt struck my laptop. Its screen, to be specific. If that doesn't sound too bad, just wait; it gets worse. I don't quite understand what happened actually, so maybe laying it down in text will help me discover the truth.
Any feedback or suggestions are welcome, obviously. For those who want to speed read this, I got you covered. I'll be using bold font to help y'all map out this wall of text.
I attempted to diagnose the laptop visually, and figured that the backlight was out of order. I could...Last edited by ribBit; 09-26-2018, 01:43 PM.

Re: New Members - please post your introductions here
Hi all, Alex here,
But please, just call me Froggy. This is my first time posting on a forum. I'll try and not get sucked in too hard, gotta stay busy ^^ but if there was ever a forum to subscribe to, I might actually have found it here.
I live in a well-off area of the greater Paris, where every week people throw away their "old" electronics on the pavement. I've recently taken to picking some of it up, messing with it, and even diagnosing machines and components, especially computers, in...
