  • Re: HP pavilion dv9000

I HAD a dv9000. My problem is that I went to HP update. they told me my BIOS needed an update. OK I said. I did that and the BIOS update said it had updated successfully.
That is the problem with mine. with that new BIOS, it never worked again. spoiled a perfectly good laptop. I joined the literally thousands of laptops that were made crippled by this update. there is no fix. What pisses me off is that they are still serving that file, crippling more dv9000's each day. It's not right but you see if they stopped serving the file, that would be saying...

  • Re: HP dv1000 not responding

After looking a bit harder, I think I see that little guy. He's right behind the power jack. If it's just a tiny bit larger than a resistor but has no markings except maybe a 6A on it and it is cylindrical. That's your dude to check out. Ones I have usually seen are 6 amps. Could be +/- a few though. What's a dv at? 19 or 19.5? something like that. Let us know if that's the culprit please.

I believe dv series is late enough to have an on board fuse. It's a tiny mother and looks like the size of an on board resistor except for the fact that it is (usually) cylindrical.
A common open for these units. You can bet it will happen if the wrong PS is applied. It's located just before the first diode, inbound. not enough magnification. macro mag needed to determine exact area. ( sorry, me eyes aren't as good as they once were LOL)

  • Re: Li-Ion revival? What happened here?

    Read: 1:25

Of course we know that with Li technology, a battery charging management system MUST be incorporated into the battery itself. If the Batt falls below a certain voltage (this amount varies among compounds used with Lithium), the management system will open the Vo feed exiting to preserve the remaining voltage in order that it might still then be capable to ramp upward again if voltage is applied. If an insufficient amount of power is applied to the battery at first when it is in this state, the management nor the battery...

  • Re: Viewsonic VX1940w Turns on / makes noise / turns off

Post is a little bit long. Sorry about that chief. Read: 2:50

The noise that you hear is oscillation most likely. This means don't do that. R & R the bad caps first. Remove and replace ANY caps that are bulged, even a little. It indicates a chemical process has begun inside the component to where it will eventually self destruct.

Plain Bill spells it out clear. Do you know how many boards I have seen in my lifetime? I don't LOL wish I had a nickel....

    I have lots of drawers...

  • Re: Mounting caps slightly off the board

Note that there is an ESR increase, absolutely. However, this amount would bear no difference to the performance of the referenced circuitry. In fact, the ESR differential between the first exit point of an average cap of this nature (electrolytic 105's typical) and the end of lead in probably not measurable at the voltages this equipment runs at nor would it be measured with typical equipment of the same nature. I'd say it would begin in the nano's somewhere above 20,000 which is way out of the league of this type of equipment since the...

  • Re: New Members - please post your introductions here

Hello my name is Pete (obvious, yet not so much these days)

I repair electronics for friends usually, just for fun mostly. I will always refer to them as clients or customers though to keep the professional image of the board.

This is a long intro, but I am somewhat complicated; not self willed mind you.
Forgive the eccentric portions please but it will help understand who I am.

  • Re: Acer AL2416 AL2416W 24" 1920x1280 LCD Monitor

Excellent tech work. I have replaced the four caps on the upper half of the inverter board previously and my customer said she was swapping a computer and when she plugged in the monitor there was no screen image.

Checking on this, I noticed that the problem is not the backlighting which is working fine. This time there is a problem on the video board. No startup logo or any imaging at all.

C159, C135, and C154 as you mention above checked out OK as well as the remaining caps.

    I'm...
