Re: First Successful Recap
I also would like to wholeheartedly second this statement. I just did my vcore capacitors on 2 shuttle xpc's. Little scary working with the heat & soldering (i havent done any soldering in like 20 years, lol), but I got it all done and effectively too.
Both machines booted right up and have been stable since. They've actually both been running apps for the last 11 hours now. I plan to burn em in for another day and a half. But so far fantastic.
They were such awesome looking boxes that I was heart sick thinking...

Cap Height ?
Caps I pulled from the board are 8mmx24mm, 3.5mm spacing, 3.6v 1800uF.
Caps I'd like to put in are identical except they are 8mmx20mm, so basically 4mm shorter in height.
Will the shorter height be an issue ?
Thanks.

Re: Recomend a Solder/Desolder Station around $200?
Okay cool. I just did a MB removal earlier with some 45 and 50w irons. It seemed to go fairly smooth. Everything looks good, the holes are clear enough place new leads into. The only thing of note is just a slight marring of the clear coating around the leads. Just slightly yellow brownish and only a little / barely noticeable unless I look closely.
Would this be considered normal or did I apply too much heat ? One picture I saw showed the board where leads were removed appeared as if there was no discoloration at...

Re: Tools & Caps - Worthwhile ?
Thanks for the replies. I went and ordered a couple of those Nichicon just to be consistent with what I have. Hopefully I haven't mangled my board too bad with the removal earlierWe'll see next week.

Re: Recomend a Solder/Desolder Station around $200?
If this post is in the wrong spot let me know - but question regarding irons and removing caps on MB's :
From point of iron contact with solder / lead on the board - how long should it take to melt ? Is there a time frame you should wait and if theres no melting remove the heat for fear of damage ?
I understand it needs to be quick - but how quick, etc ?
Thanks.

Re: Tools & Caps - Worthwhile ?
Bummer - that 40w station is under 1/2 the price of the 50w. But I'd rather go into this with good equipment than not.
Okay so dont mess with those eBay ones then ? Is there a way to spot fakes reliably ? By specs and pictures those sounded like they'd be the ones
Last since the rubycon 6.3v 1800uF 8x20mm are out of stock on this site - are the samxon caps of the same value just as good to use ?
Thanks.

Tools & Caps - Worthwhile ?
Done a bunch of reading and based on what I've read and what available to me locally I'm considering this iron for doing the caps on my Shuttle MB's :
Weller WLC100 Station (40w ~900F)
Two other options are the:
WP35 Iron (grounded 35w)
WES51 Station
I'm guessing that the 40w station will get the job done well. But I'm new to caps and MB's. Let me know what you think.
Also since I notice the Rubycon caps are out of stock here are the Samxon ones a good alternative ?
I need the 6.3v 1800uF 8x20mm caps....
