Re: NPN transistor good or bad
Thats why i just tend to shotgun replace them if they are fairly old . As you say they can test good sometimes and still be knackered . If I`m working on audio gear especially I will just go ahead and replace the lot ....

Thanks for that I`ll get one ordered. Should be a fairly simple conversion too by the looks .
Thanks again !
Here`s a new link to them if anyone is interested !

Re: Hakko desoldering gun help
I would think you are right yes . I might just bite the bullet and get a new unit. FInding a gun to work on here is going to be like finding hens teeth I think . Such a shame . I really dont want to get rid of the iron because its by far the best Iron I`ve ever owned and i have a lot . I always think "i`ll upgrade my iron" and always end going back to my trusty 700 . Its just such a great iron . If you have any tips on maybe getting , or making , a controller for it , I would be all ears , you may have to speak slowly and in "idiot"...

Re: Hakko desoldering gun help
So there is no temp sensing on the desoldering gun at all is there .. must be as i suspected and its coeffecient sensing but its clearly not working on this gun

Re: Hakko desoldering gun help
Damn how the hell did you find that , I`ve been looking for that for sooo long ..haha .
Thanks man thats awesome . Looks like I`m going to have to put this to bed for a while and try and get a new controller in there . Thanks brother your assistance has been first class !

Re: Hakko desoldering gun help
No i dont have an old gun , That went a long time ago . I`ve had this unit getting on 25 years . So i wired the new gun to H and H on the board it heats up ok , problem is it doesnt stop heating up . to the point it glows , at which point a "oh shit" popped out and I shut it down . So its no sensing the temp for sure .

Re: Hakko desoldering gun help
OK so , here`s what we have , (see images)
There are 3 active wires + earth at the plug do I ASSUME that there is heater + heater - and a pump - which connects to the - side of the heater when you pull the trigger . Does that sound plausable to you guys ?
The wires are - black - +v/H on the board
- Red - -v on the board (believed to be pump -)
- White - H On the board

Re: NPN transistor good or bad
With the price of transistors these days , my rule is usually "if in doubt change it out" Normally I dont used a transistor tester i just used a multimeter and if is passes there I call it good , I certainly wouldnt use 2 or more different testers because it can muddy the waters as you are seeing . My personal opinion is that there is a diode in it between collector and emitter . This would give you the results you are seeing ....Last edited by RepairNewbie47; 06-22-2018, 11:23 PM.

Re: Hakko desoldering gun help
cheers thanks for that , i dont think the hakko had a temp sensor at the element , i think it used the difference in resistance at the coil its self to determine the temp (coefficient temperature resistance) so i think i can just ignore the temp sensing wires and use the heating element . Should know tomorrow , thanks for your help.

Transistor issue sony TC-280
I`m currently working on a Sony TC-280 Reel to Reel and I`m looking to swap out the noisy transistors.
They are , 2sc631a , 2sc632a and 2sc634a .
I know I would have to rotate them clockwise one hole but could I use BC107b`s in there ? I have a load of them here so would be easier .
Hope this isnt a daft question , I`m still learning .
Thanks for any help .

Re: Hakko desoldering gun help
Having had a look inside the Hakko now , it seems that it uses only 4 of the pins out of the 5 in the socket , so I can only assume that this is 2 for the element and 2 for the switch (send and return to the pump) , and the temp is controlled but the co-efficiency of the heater itself (as some of them were back then). This is good it means I dont need to worry about the 2 wires on the heating element for the temp sensing I can just go ahead wire the element , and the switch and hopefully we should have a working gun . The gun isnt here yet should arrive...Last edited by RepairNewbie47; 06-22-2018, 07:32 AM.

Hakko desoldering gun help
Hi all new here great forum !
Ok so my issue is slightly different to the norm probably .
I have a Hakko 900c soldering station with a iron and a desoldering gun , the gun is completely destroyed which is a shame , however someone gave me a gun from a duratool ZD-915 and ZD-917 machine which is very similar looking , not as durable I dont think as the old Hakko but my question is , would it work and how should I go about wiring it ? I no longer have the Hakko one for a reference which I`m kicking myself about so thats a pain . The Cheapo one has 6 pins and the hakko...Last edited by RepairNewbie47; 06-22-2018, 05:01 AM.
