  • Re: Random Power Shutdowns

    Thanks again.

Should not my anti-surge protector have taken care of any over voltage spike or could this be failing?

The Shark case comes with dual 12cm front and back cooling fans. The front of the inner case, the Shark case has a door, has a grill and there are vents and a grill of sort on the door itself presumably to allow air to flow in when closed.

Point taken about the hdd coolers but as I say they are cheap so worth a try to see what happens, assuming I can fit them that is.

    In the longer...

  • Re: Random Power Shutdowns

Just wanted to update everyone on the current situation. Since the inital power shutdown with the fsp PSU I have had my system running 24/7 since last Wednesday, in excess of 260 hours continuous running under load, without failing.

This would seem to prove that the QTEC was the cause of the problem. To date there has been no indication that the fsp isn't coping with the demands of my system, contrary to the comments on the ASUS forum saying 500 watts is pretty slim for this board. I'm using a 550 Antec and I consider that a minimum

Just a quick reply. I am still running the system 24/7 to see whether the last shutdown was for some inexplicable reason caused by the thunderstorm we had at that time even though nothing else seems to have been.

As regards the BIOS I have checked the ASUS CD that came with the motherboard and the file list shows the chipset driver is v6.65 and this is confirmed by Everest Home Edition that shows CK8-04. From this I take it that the BIOS came at that level from the factory so no point in going back to an earlier version.

Not heard of this but looking at the knoppix site it says it's a bootable Live system on CD or DVD. Does this mean that I can boot my system from the CD/DVD much as I would have in the old days with a Windows ME floppy and just run it from the disc with no installation?...

Forgot to say I have tapped out all over the motherboard, including ICs, capacitors etc and not been able to produce fault.

  • Re: Random Power Shutdowns

Not good, just had shutdown after about 30 hours running. However, did happen in the midst of a severe thunderstorm although no other electrical devices were affected i.e needed resetting.

Suppose the next step is to push and poke on the board to see if I can reproduce the fault. After that not sure what to do next as I'm not too keen in chasing money in the hope I will find the problem. Also not sure now if it's possible to buy the A8N_SLI now so I don't have to do a complete reinstall.

Could turn out to be cheaper to ditch...

    Thanks willawake

I have a pci-express card (256MB RADEON x700 tV/dvi PCI-Express) but can't see any connector on it to match the plug.

System is certainly a lot quieter with the new psu, can hardly tell that it's running.

Since getting the new psu been trying to read up on the new ATX 12V 2.0 format. I think it's something to do with a clean supply to the cpu and video card but not sure.

If you can post a link to something I'd be grateful.

Thanks, have connected the additional 4 wire plug to the ATCX power connector. Can't see anything on my board that looks like it would take the PCI-Express plug.

Should I expect to see any differences now I am using the 24 pin connector, or is it all transparent.

As regards the old PSU, just want to check that all fans were/are working not to actually test the unit.

Sorry, don't understand the first part of your reply, which additional plug are you talking about? Can you explain a bit more please?

Thanks for info about the QTEC psu, though that might be the case but wanted to make sure. Can I could fit it to any PC to test? I have an old one, possibly P2/P3 (but would need to check) I could fit it to temporarily>

  • Re: Random Power Shutdowns

Hi, sorry to come back so soon. have got the fsp installed and the system running. First thing is that there is an additional 4 pin plug where the main (22 pin) power plug is. My motherboard has a 24 pins power socke but the QTEC only had 22 pins. I have not connected the additional plug and all seems well so what are the extra four pins for? Also there is an additional six pin plug with yellow/black leads. What is that for please?

May be my imagination but the drives are running cooler than I quoted before. At the moment after 33 mins running...

  • Re: Random Power Shutdowns

    Thanks.

New PSU will be with me on Monday. Perhaps before I fit I could gently (& nervously) push down on the board, wearing suitable anti-static protection of course, to see if anything happens.

I suppose it's always possible that when the replacement board was fitted it wasn't done 100% although I would hope a "professional" would be wary of such a thing.

I probably won't post again until after the psu is installed (unless pushing down causes it to collapse) and I've had the chance to run the...

Thanks again for an informative reply.

Are the Nichicons HM (N) the capacitors used on my board and if so what makes them good? If it's not could you explain a bit more, I like to learn from people like you so I can help others if the need arises.

As for the HDD temp, is the 46°c you mention a standard even for a SATA drive, I was trying to find out what this should be. From when I first got the system I found the SATA drives in particular seemed to run a lot hotter (the other Maxtor is one I've had for some time). Could...

Should have said that I took the opportunity to look at the motherboard and although I'm no expert, without taking it completly out of the case, there didn't seem to be any evidence of caps leaking or blowing

    Hi again

Sorry don't understand that. Took a look at the BIOS but couldn't see anything like it.

Been trawling through a lot of web pages and they do seem to confirm that QTEC are poorly thought off, that's being polite. Lots of threads about restarts, failing to boot up, and general power problems etc. Even a couple similar to my own problem where there have been random shutdowns but these seem to have happened whilst playing a demanding game or such like, which I don't do.

    Also lots of info...

Just a quick reply to say that I was aware of the ASUS site. Have to say that ASUS Support isn't a patch on Soltek, they seem to make it hard to get what you want and even getting a job number doesn't guarantee a reply. By comparison Soltek Support are available via email and reply usually within 48 hours.
My BIOS is already at 1014 which is the latest.
Had another power shutdown about four hours after the one this morning.

  • Re: Random Power Shutdowns

Thanks for the latest inputs. Thought I would take the time to read through all the posts again as I think I am the situation in which I have to accept the need to buy another PSU and to then decide which one, more of that later.

Thinking things through uit does strike me as strange that prior to sending the system back the power shutdowns were quite frequent, but at the moment they seem more widely dispersed. However as soon as I wrote that the system shutdown, this after about 124 hours of running. My wife's system remained on so I have...

  • Re: Random Power Shutdowns

    Thanks for the update.

You anticipated a question going through my mind as to what the logical order would be for changing things out. Was trying to get my head around how far I would be prepared to go, money wise, before I give it up as a lost cause and either live with it or dump it and start over again.

It really is strange, or at least to me, that it can run for days at a time, well at the moment at least, then suddenly fail, or is this what would be expected with bad caps in the PSU or motherboard?

    What's...

Just a quick update to say the local firm have replied and suggested the antec smartpower 400W PSU that retails for £39(GBP)-€58 including VAT. Any thoughts?

They also charge £35(GBP)-€52 including VAT for fault diagnosis.

Could be worth speculating if they can give it a good check over, especially if they find the fault.

Are you talking about capacitor failure on the motherboard or within the PSU.

If I have to check the motheboard I will have to wait until it switches off and then hope that my eyes can detect anything amiss. Not s easy to see small components as you get older!!

I did consider trying the PSU from my wife's PC but didn't think it would be up to the job. Details are:

    ATLAS FP-300WE(P4)
    +3.3V 20A
    +5V 30A
    +12V 16A
    -5V 0.5A
