  • Re: MacBook Pro 13 2009 A1278

Try a keyboard bypass by shorting out two pads on a certain point of the board. Should be able to google it with images. Maybe the power button is shot?

  • Re: Macbook Pro 13 2010 A1278 EMC:2351 wont power up

I had a MacBook Pro that wouldn't show any charging led or power on. I used a light prober on the board to see how far power was flowing through to the end of the board. Turned out power would stop at the charge board at a very specific small doohickey. Cleaned the thing very carefully and it now the laptop works perfectly.

So, my advise is to use a light prober and see which areas on the board are receiving power and go from there.

  • Re: New Gigabyte motherboard PC won't post

reminds me of when I was deployed overseas for 3 months in 2003 and my room mate left my computer on. During this time a major virus infected a ton of computers causing windows xp to constantly reboot. My computer rebooted 24/7 until finally the hard drive failed.... Sadly I came back and had to order 74GB Western Digital Raptor.

  • Re: PS3 Gpu problem

Here are some pictures. The first picture is of the bluray cable and the next is the aftermath of the heatgun. I bought some liquid solder flux from microcenter... but it looks messy as hell... I'm hoping I got the right type. I blasted the gpu at around 220 and 240 C for 10 minutes. I noticed the board was kinda warping so I used some bolts and washers to try to keep it in palace. This is the 3rd time I've done this. The other two unsuccessful attempts I blasted it for around 5 minutes. If this doesn't work I'm probably going to sell it for parts....

  • PS3 Gpu problem

I just bought a used PS3 for 50 bucks that for the most part refuses to display any video. When I do get it to display the video it's mostly garbled and then the system freezes. I'll have to turn it upside down to temporary fix it. I'm tempted to attempt a heatgun reflow, or try baking the motherboard in the oven at 390 C. Anyone have any success stories or any tips they'd like to share on this repair?

  • Re: Blown cap on video card, help me location a replament?

Those caps were left overs from a G5 Imac kit I ordered from some web vendor called iFix Mac Computers.

I double checked the whole board and don't see any spots where there would be any solder shorts. On my first attempted I only replaced the original blown cap and tried the card out. It appeared to work correctly, but when I had to restart the computer the card started to freak out. I then noticed the replacement cap becoming extremely hot.

After this I started monkeying around by replacing caps...

Here are some pics of the area. I removed the replacement cap to see what the card would do.

Before I put in the replacement cap, I removed the old cap and the card at least would show 2d. Now with or without the replacement cap it gives garbage at the post screen. I think I might have ruined the gpu core. This was happening with the nicked cap and the one I replaced it with. The capacity rating and voltage rating were the same....

  • Re: Blown cap on video card, help me location a replament?

I'll have to post some pictures when I get home. I'm kinda afraid to show off my butchered first attempt to solder a surface mount cap. Wasn't as easy for me as some would say. But I guess that's the learning process, screw-up a bunch of stuff so I can perfect my skills.

When I got the board the top part near the shorted cap had this sticky brown film around the board. Almost as if some cola was dumped on it. I've since then cleaned it off with alcohol. I suppose I'll need to learn how to test mosfet switches...

It's a XFX 7900GS AGP card. The I'm pretty sure the cap is installed the correct way. It's a surface mount cap and there are white lines on the pcb board that indicate how it should be aligned. When I first got the board it wouldn't show video until I took off the bad cap. Without the cap it would not do any 3d acceleration.

I'm thinking what ever blew the first cap is causing this replacement to go bad as well. I'll probably remove the cap and see if it displays video. Wish I knew how to diagnose it. Guess...

I replaced the blown cap on and the card started right away but the cap got seriously hot. Turned it off and checked my solder job and it looked okay. Put the card back in and it started to artifact and now doesn't show any picture. So what ever caused the cap to blow has probably cause damage to the gpu chipset.

If you look at the picture of the blown cap you'll see it's a surface mount cap that sits on a black plastic base. I've never re-soldered on of those before so I don't know how the new part is going to look, or if the leads will be long to where I cut them off. When I desoldered the old cap it appeared like the leads were underneath the black plastic base and not very long.

  • Re: Gigabyte 8I865GME-775-RH stuck at post screen

don't think I can get it to reload the bois. It gets stuck right before it's supposed to detect the ide/sata drives and won't get any further. I can't even get into the built in bois recovery/flash utility.

  • Gigabyte 8I865GME-775-RH stuck at post screen

I have a gigabyte 8I865GME-775-RH that will power on, but sticks at the post screen. If I press del to enter the bois setup, it will show "entering setup" but then stick there. Same thing happens if I try to go into the built in flash utility.

I have tested my cpu and ram on another motherboard and they appear to work correctly. I have also cleared the cmos and pulled it's battery. So I'm pretty sure the problem is with the board.

This motherboard was working fine until a Antec 350 watt power supply that was being used with it failed. I opened the PSU...

  • Re: Blown cap on video card, help me location a replament?

I got the card in the mail and decided to put it into my machine to test it. Results: No video output and the video card. Took the bad cap off and the video card works, still all other caps get very hot and it appears to be in gimp mode as nvidia demos run at like 1 fps.

I ordered the bad cap but I have no idea how I'm going to solder this sucker on as the leads seem to be covered by the plastic base and I won't be able to stick a solder tip underneath it. I'm thinking of buying some solder past and heat it...

I don't have the card on me right now as I'm going to be purchasing it from a friend. From his description it sounds like the gpu fan stopped working and the video card heated up and popped the capacitor. I'm hoping all I need to do is change the cap and gpu fan.

I search Digikey's website and this is the only surface mount cap I could find that fits your best guess. It's made by Nichicon.

BTW how do I tell the Ripple Current and Impedance from just looking at the cap?Re: Blown cap on video card, help me.... It's made by

When I goto Digikey's website and look for 470mf 16V surface mount caps I get the following companies to choose from. Which one would you suggest? I need to order them from Digikey as I have a family member who works there and gets them at a nice discount..

    Cornell Dubilier
    Elna America
    Panasonic -ECG
    United Chimi-Con
    Vishay/BC Compenents

  • Blown cap on video card, help me location a replament?

Hi, I'm new to recapping things and I'm unsure of how to read this cap. Typically I look for the capacity rating and voltage, but this cap doesn't appear to have a voltage rating as far as I can tell. It's the one on the very top. To me the bottom number reads 16A. Any help would be great! I'm trying to use Digikey's website to order a replacement, as I am able to get a nice discount from them. Thanks....

  • Thank you for this wonderful site!

I would like to thank everyone responsible for this site! Because of the information provided here I have repaired 3 Apple Emacs and 1 G5 20 inch Imac Isight replacing the caps on the logic board.

I have a gigabyte board that was pulled from a computer with a bad power supply. This board will post with a new PSU but won't go into bois, flash utility, or detect any drives. None of the caps look bad, but I'm going to replace them all anyways. Wish me luck.
