Yep, I meant 420MB. Really should've gotten some sleep before I wrote that post, lol....

  • Re: What fails for you the most?

Seagate consumer drives and most definitely Toshiba drives.

My original Toshiba 320GB HDD in my current laptop from 2011 only lasted until August 2013 (too many bad sectors). Had another older Toshiba 40GB laptop drive suddenly die after ~2 years of use as well (2005 - 2007). One interesting exception is the 120GB Toshiba laptop hard drive that was in my sis's old Gateway laptop. That drive was bought in 2008 to replace her dying 100GB Seagate drive. It has gone through heavy use. It was replaced with a 320GB Hitachi drive in 2012...

  • Re: Lesson in dust cleaning

Surprisingly, I have. I had to fix a computer that had malware. It also was never maintained since they even bought the desktop, which was 2009! Three years of dust accumulation in the computer case and the power supply in a dusty basement. The system, including the power supply's fan, ran pretty loud. After cleaning it out, the system was quiet.

The power supply also looked like new, too, after cleaning it out. For the record, it was a Lite-On 250W power supply. Though, the power supply I saw was worse than the one in...

lol, someone trying to use a penny or some sort in this laptop. Doing it wrong, though!

I, however, would never have done this.

  • Re: Ratdude's Main rig V3.5

May be fine, may not be. I have two HDDs with >400 bad sectors and they still work properly. They're both Seagate drives, too.

Seems so. I actually managed to get Windows Vista SP2 working on my Tyan Tiger MPX S2466N-4M board, even the onboard NIC which has no Vista drivers, with no issues... then I installed WinXP Pro SP3 on it. I probably could get Win7 working on my board if I even bothered to do so....

  • Re: Why would anyone get a desktop anymore

Yep. If anyone saw my computer stuff, very few, if any, are modern computers that are in the i5 era. Only two laptops in the house are recent: one in May 2011, and one in December 2012.

My dad's WinXP desktop runs on a Pentium III, and his laptop is a Pentium 4 Celeron heater.
My gaming desktop runs on a Core 2 Duo. (E6550)
My sister's laptop is also on a Core 2 Duo. (T7200)
My mom's second laptop is also on a Core 2 Duo. (T2300)
My two servers are in the Pentium III era.
    My workstation...

  • Re: E-POS E-880 Series: Bios Needed

I also ran into a mini POS that went by 880, lol. Threw me off, though. Here's the old text, for future reference:

    ---

    The AM880. Either versions: 1.2, 1.3, 2.0

    Found them through here: http://www.helpdrivers.com/desktops/Amazepc/AM880/

Downloaded them and put them on my server: http://cwcyrix.no-ip.info/am880-bios

Man, it was tricky finding these BIOS files. But that's what I do.

    ---

    Also attached these files, since...

  • Re: does the xp EOL affect the tablet edition to?

Yep, but it depends on the board. I tried Win7 on an old BIOSTAR U8798 Pro P4 board with 2GB of DDR400 RAM. Ran surprisingly efficient, but unsurprisingly, it didn't like the onboard sound (never worked).

Also ran Win7 on an Asus P4B motherboard. Ran pretty well there as well.

Then... I tried Win7 (and WinVista) on an Abit SR7-8X motherboard. Couldn't install the AGP Bus drivers, therefore making the board virtually useless for both OSes. Didn't have a newer PCI graphics card back then,...

  • Re: people are sheep when it comes to beats audio!

Never really liked any of the Beats headsets. Always thought they were overrated and overpriced.

Only ones I wear now are my Panasonic RP-HT360 monitor headphones. Abused my first set, now I use my second set most of the time. The first set stays at home, though.

Some years ago, I owned a pair of Jensen monitor headphones. I loved the way they sounded, then they had to die after a year of use.

@goontron: I vaguely remember owning a set of cheap Sentry headphones, and they actually did...

  • Re: Got lots of junk, what should I do with it?

I have two of those cards, mainly because Sis wanted to hear distorted Genesis music through an archaic DOS Genesis emulator (Genecyst) on an old computer, and I took the original one out of that PC to place in another computer. It only worked with that one version, as it was fixed in later versions.

That CT4170's Vibra16XV chipset has a quirk regarding its Creative (Win3.x) or Windows 9x Volume Control with that old Genesis emulator, as the notes went off-balance depending on how loud it was set. It...

I wonder what model SB16 sound card it is, as there are quite a few. (Curious!) And a Sound Blaster AWE64 Gold? Lucky.

I love vintage hardware, yet I don't primarily collect them. I obtained an SB16 CT2830 for a 486 build. I don't even have an AT case, at least, not yet....

  • Re: Farewell, Minidisc

Interesting. I only remember Sony discontinuing the MiniDisc Walkman stuff in 2011. Even earlier, U.S. popularity really fell in 2006, mainly because of the unstable SonicStage software used with NetMD units, especially v3. The 1:1 recorders were mostly fine, but the copy protection...

That was mostly defeated by getting an MZ-RH1/MZ-M200 recorder, but they are in high demand even today. Otherwise, you were stuck recording 1:1 through an analog cable to another source.

I have a few MiniDisc recorders and players,...

  • Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Last month, I was looking to obtain an old beige ATX case for my FIC PA-2013 board because I wanted an old system in my room, instead bought an entire system for ~$3.40.

    System contained:
a generic CD-ROM drive, 50X speed

a Sony floppy drive, since used in my second Socket 7 build (PCChips M520), which has a Sony CD drive

a FIC AZ11 Socket A/462 motherboard with its I/O shield. Partially recapped some capacitors: 8 VRM (few were bad, one dented), 2 between third RAM slot and two smaller chips; third RAM slot's...

  • Re: Newfound hatred for windows 8

Classic thread. Only experimented with Windows 8 (Release Preview) on an abused Seagate Momentus 320GB HDD with ~430 reallocated sectors, and left it alone since, then finally formatted the drive. Though faster than my Windows 7 install, the changes within that OS made me go "lol no."

However, Mom's old Vista laptop finally died recently and had to buy a new one. Despite me telling her that Windows 8 is vastly different from even Windows 7, she got a Win8 laptop. Then she said to me: "This is a large learning curve...
