I concur that it requires a total boot to have the required functionality to perform eeprom regeneration, factory reset, enable ex-link port, etc - so whether caused by bad flash or fatal eeprom glitch, the problem can only be solved externally ( or with factory procedure/inside information ) - I will report back anything I learn that might help others - meanwhile thank you both for replying to me

hello fellow peers, scholars, and potential saviors...
..after much searching for particulars about my problem with no luck, I thought to hijack this thread because the last post is just the segue to where I have wandered...
I have connected my PC to CN901_DEBUG out of desperation because of a firmware upgrade gone bad ( last thing displayed after reaching 100% was something like "unit will now power off for three seconds" ) - interestingly I discovered the need to set terminal baud rate to 38400...
