Re: SGI Multilink Adapter
One of those it is then. I'll get some ordered and see how it goes.
Thanks for your help, appreciated.

Re: SGI Multilink Adapter
Thank you very much, I'll give it a go as I don't really have anything else to go on, and if it doesn't work then I'm no worse off!
What about the JV3 H? Am I looking at one of these?

Re: SGI Multilink Adapter
Does anybody know how to test these? I've been looking at mouser but don't have a clue what to pick up. Somebody did send a photo of their board but it's a different rev with slightly different components.

Xilinx XC1765ELS08C alternative
Hello,
I need to find an alternative to a Xilinx XC1765ELS08C PROM Serial 64k bit 8 pin SOIC chip. As these have been discontinued they are hard to come by and very expensive when they land on eBay. A lot of the eBay ones have rubbish data already in place and are often recycled.
Also, I would have to buy an old parallel port programmer from the US (I'm in the UK) and I don't have access to a) a parallel port enable PC or b) have a version of Windows that will work with the programmer software.
My options are either try and source an alternative chip...

Re: SGI Multilink Adapter
No, that's the only one on the whole pcb, top or bottom.
I've asked if anybody on the neko forum has one and could check the part description.

SGI Multilink Adapter
So I picked up a known not working SGI MLA adapter for a 1600SW SGI panel (I know this works, tested on a SGI O2) a few weeks ago. The adapter lets you use a 1600SW panel with DVI input.
The guy I got it from was going to chuck it in the bin but I thought I'd see if I could see anything wrong on the pcb as usually these suffer from blown mosfets. The mosfets appear fine and unit powers on but produces a solid red status led.
There was however a dodgy looking three-legged component (suspect a paired diode?) that looked like it's coocked. The plastic package has burnt...

Re: Component identification
Thank you for your help.
I've managed to source a replica PCB in non-working state, I'll pull one from the donor board as there are about 5 on each board. These aren't usually the culprits when these boards fail, it's most likely the old style IBM compression connectors that get damaged.
Failing all this I'll just buy a few new ones.
Thanks again.

Re: Component identification
Hi, the other one on the board is smashed to bits. Seems like it was knocked, the one end has come off the board, the ceramic and coil winding have been broken as well....

Re: Component identification
Thanks! From googling it seems to be the MuRata feed through capacitor used as an EMI filter as you've suggested. Question is, how do I go about measuring the capacitance of the one on the board? They seem to come in a few pF ratings....

Component identification
Hi all,
I have a component I need to replace on a PCB of a very old custom graphics card for an SGI machine. I've managed to take a picture of an intact one, does anybody know what this is and how I can spec a replacement?
The part looks like a very small fuse but with a metal half loop cage around it. The cage is soldered to the PCB as well as the ends of the insulated section. On the broken part I can see a copper wire connecting the two ends. The metal cage is just that, metal. L511 on the board
Thank you....

Re: SGI Octane 747W Cherokee PSU noise
Some photos. This is one of the boards in the PSU. I plugged the PSU into the wall socket and listened for the noise. The noise seems to emanate from the black Potter and Brumfield relay, or immediate surrounding components....as in very immediate. Could the yellow PTG MPX GPF capacitor (??) also make a noise?
Anyhow, here are some photos, excuse the flash, it's late......

Re: SGI Octane 747W Cherokee PSU noise
I took a chance last night and plugged it in to the Octane. The warbling sound dissipates when you power on the workstation. When powering it down, the loud noise resumes. The PSU is a bit like modern ones, it never fully powers down and enters a 'power save' mode that draws about 0.2A while plugged in to the wall but turned off at the workstation side. This is sort of confirmed as the psu remains warm in one spot after about three hours of no workstation activity.
I've decided to keep the unit so will open it today, take some...

Re: SGI Octane 747W Cherokee PSU noise
I also have an old Lucent psu, it's dead quiet apart from sounding like a jet engine (fan). It is whisper quiet in all other respects though. Cannot use the Lucent one as it does not work with VPro graphics boards unfortunately.

Re: SGI Octane 747W Cherokee PSU noise
Hi, the PSU should be dead quiet apart from the internal fan. The fan noise is separate to this other noise.
I had one of these 8 years ago and this is by no means normal.

Re: SGI Octane 747W Cherokee PSU noise
I'm aware of the Nekochan forum and am a member there. While 99.5% of them can tell how to NUMA link two servers together or compile some obscure piece of code, they are a bit thin on the ground when it comes to electronic matters. Tracing 3.3v lines, yes. Diagnosing a sick sounding psu, very very unlikely....

SGI Octane 747W Cherokee PSU noise
Hi,
I recently acquired a second hand SGI Octane Cherokee PSU, and while it does power on and 'work' in the workstation, it makes a rather disturbing noise. I wouldn't call it coil whine, it's more like a warbling electrical noise. The noise is from a specific area on the PSU but before I open the PSU and void the sellers warranty, I thought I'd put up a post to see if anybody has come across this before or has any ideas?
I'm quite happy to replace bad caps etc but if it's something that is likely to cost more than say £25 then I might as well return the unit for...
