Hello all. I retired a couple years ago from 42 years with BNSF Railway as a Signal ET. Worked on really weird proprietary stuff that tested the limits of electrical engineering. Our motto was "It only works on paper, but we make it work anyway." The foundation of train signals is, we shove a mix of Low Frequencies (mostly below 1khz "audio" tones) and coded audio chirps (below 3khz) a couple miles down the rails and into trackside signal boxes. I know this is an old thread, but for the record, I had a very similar problem. Backlights would flash on for a second then go off. It seemed like the Protect3 circuit was the problem. I hit Q1500 (2SK2417) on the inverter board, which I think initiates the protect circuit, with a hairdryer for a couple seconds and boom it lit up and stayed lit. I then hit Q1500 with cold air can and it shut down and wouldn't re-fire until I heated it back up again. The Zener Diode in that circuit is a very specific voltage (and kinda hard to find) it may be suspect...
