• Re: 27" samsung s27a350 dead

Your safety test pdf has to do with returning a receiver to the customer, not when you initially get it in for repair.
I'm sure you both do a safety check every time before returning it, eh?
If you really felt there was a safety issue with ogtommy don't you think that he would have been electrocuted by now?
You've never felt tingles when attaching cables to equipment?
Due to double insulated equipment i.e. ogtommy's TV and two Samsung monitors, they could be floating at around 40...

Hello evilkitty,

You have to remember that when people restore vintage radios and other appliances, its extremely rare that they can get original parts again. Therefore they have to use modern components to do their repairs.
Some actually hide the modern component inside the original by hollowing it out. Paper capacitors were a favorite. But inevitably they have to replace some parts that stick out like dogs balls in regards to being modern.

You are correct though, the restoration...

• Re: I'm not sure it gets more gutless than this

Hello budm,

Could you please tell me the detrimental effects if two diodes were in circuit rather than one?

I realize this, and yet it originally had one diode and no filtering what so ever. Ripple would have been relatively high with half wave rectification.
So what should I have labeled the output voltage. 13.4, 16V with ripple???

Edit:
@ evilkitty
The more I look at that thermal disconnect, it looks more like a mercury tilt switch....

Hello ogtommy,
Can you please check something for me?
I need you to go to the back of your stereo and touch the metal case to see if you get a tingle from it.
Though you may have to touch another appliance with your other hand to actually get a slight or hefty buzz.
Please let us know how you get on.
Thanx in advance.

• Re: What cap should replace this?

Hello evilkitty,
You just need to use a standard capacitor and NOT an ESR or high ripple type.
You need to look for a 105ยบ TK-R type or similar. Dimensions would need to be the same or smaller.

Hello evilkitty,

I originally drew it using my Eagle schematic proggie.
I then did a screen capture and opened it using Corel 7.
I removed any unwanted values, arrows and location marks.
I then converted it to 8-bit greyscale.
I used Micro$oft Photo Premium 10 to place the watermark.

Pity. Since its so old, it would be considered a vintage item, and perhaps worth a few dollars to a collector.

Hello crash-cyberdrive,
Could you please see your modified picture below:

You need to remove the glue that's shown by the red circles. Search the rest of the PCB, top and bottom for this glue and remove it ALL.
That garbage has been known to become conductive.
Companies that used that glue during assembly didn't do their research in regards to the long term effects it may cause over the years due to heat and age. They apparently couldn't care less.

Hello ogtommy,
Could you please look at your modified picture below:

Can you please check the voltage on the arrows indicated. What volts, if any, do you read?
If there is nothing there, then we need to track back.
But if voltage is present, then you need to check the fusible (safety) resistor shown in the red box. Also check those two zener diodes. You may have to lift one leg to get an accurate reading.
Also, could you please provide the numbers/letters of the IC indicated in green.

Hello claudiuandrei2010,
Can you please check the voltages of the connector as shown in your modified picture below:

You need to check and record the voltages with the connector connected, and also with it disconnected.

EDIT:
Could you please also check the components marked in the two modified pictures below:

Check for shorts, as well as a punch-through test on the diode.
Please let us know your results....

• Re: Insignia NS32L450A11

Hello ivtec,
Measuring the diode in-circuit may be giving you a false reading, as the diode is sitting
across the primary of the switching Xformer.
Have you measured across the tranny with the diode out of circuit?
If you find it shorted, then its more than likely normal, as you'd be measuring the
transformer winding's.
Check ZD503. Lift one leg out of circuit when measuring and ensure you do a punch-through test when you reverse bias it.
Measure across the main filter cap to see if there's any shorts.
If...

Hello killian6pk,

Yes, most definitely.
If they are reasonably priced, then it wouldn't hurt to replace them all.
Reason: They degrade after a time due to their internal molecular structure changing every time it has to deal with in-rush currents.

• Re: CyberPower 1500AVR - Repair

Hello crash-cyberdrive,
I have to say that you are brave in regards to taking this on.

I would check the transformer to make sure that it hasn't gone open circuit before you start.
You'll have to test quite a few components, both on the primary and secondary of the transformer.
You MUST ensure that you remove ALL the carbon off the PCB, especially where the carbon is extending between two or more components.
Please keep us updated on how you get on.
Good Luck!!!

• Re: XFX clicking noise

Hello tiki66,
The ticking almost sounds like the PSU is hiccuping. By this I mean, that the PSU tries to start up, senses a fault, then shuts down. It continually repeats this cycle.
It also sounds a little like arching as well. Very strange that its intermittent.
Can you check the outputs of the PSU with a multi-meter to see if there are any voltage fluctuations that keeps in tempo with the ticking?
You may also need to monitor the voltage across the main filter capacitor as well.
You need to check the above in and out of fault...

Hello nguberinic,
Please refer to your modified picture below:

Would it be possible for you to take a photo of the section shown by the indicated box?
Also, what is that component encapsulated in heat-shrink, as shown by the red arrow?
No need to remove the heat-shrink, as you might be able to see what it is via circuit component designations on the bottom and/or the top of the PCB.
Thank you.

• Re: XBOX Original - Won't power on

Hello Wester547,

Agree. In all my time in the past when I was working with TV's or computer monitors, I only ever come across one switching transformer with shorted turns. And from memory it was in a Sharp portable CRT telly.
Heaps of flyback trannys with shorted turns, even the occasional CRT deflection yoke, but just the one Chopper X-former.

True. Though I've had a fair share of 110V versions come through my work bench, but none with a faulty tranny.
Admittedly I've...

• Re: XBOX Original - Won't power on

Hello Wester547,
Thank you for clarifying the capacitor issue in regards to its working voltage.
Though when I used to replace those offending caps, I found that my 10 volt types had the same pitch as the 6.3 volt ones.

Thank you also for alerting me to the V1.4 trace fix.
I was not aware of it on that particular version.

I also never realized that my tutorial landed on another web site. I really thought that when llamma.com went defunct, it would have been lost forever.

Hello killian6pk,
Can you please check the resistor shown in the modified picture below:

To me it doesn't look like a white band marking from the factory. It seems to have burned in that section of the resistor and has turned to white ash.
Can you please confirm this?
