• Re: Dell Optiplex SX280 Weird problem!!!!

That's a good point, this TR2 is longer as well, but, by proper placing of the power supply cables I managed not to block the fan and also not get the cable crushed by the backend of the CD-ROM drive.

It took some nipping of the sheet metal with a nibbling tool and then the AC power switch on the PSU was no longer obscured/covered up.

Some pics - first, the still bits nibbled away, plus that some pieces (one piece of plastic) from that little 'arm' inside the PC that used to 'hold' the Dell PSU...

Been a busy week here, and lots of progress made.

First, some pictures of the swelled (several) and leaking (1) caps from the Dell Model HP-P2507FWP:

    Leaking cap:

    Swelled caps:

I'll have to oen it back up to get the manufacturer's name ......

    Right.

I suspect 'out there' on the 14 kV riser off the main 3-phase things are a lot 'cleaner' so to speak; however, it isn't true here near the end of a long residential spur feeder off that line (did I *did* mention being near the end of long spur by any chance?) ... in fact, for some reason this is one of the longer spur lines in this subdivision ... this as they say a "Power Quality" issue but I digress ... I'm going to take this up with out local 'provider' too I think ...

    I'm...

I don't quite understand ... but, the issue with the flat-topped mains remains today (see posted image above, for instance), and was not due to the 'arcing' across an 1" air gap on an un-used circuit a mile away (the pole-pig shown fed an unused riser to an empty lot where a house had been removed). Good work hunting that down BTW. I have a full report how all this was down, BTW, in PDF format if one is interested ...

    Regards, Jim...

I should add, I try to verify proper test equipment operation by either verifying with another instrument - or by cross checking with another type of instrument (perhaps a PC based scope or spectrum analyzer) ... I'm sure everybody does this ... right?

In the case above, swapping between CHs 1 and 2 on the O-scope resulted in the 'distorted' waveform always being associated with the AC Mains signal ...

As I was saying ... I can view the 'signal' six ways from Sunday, swap channels, et cetera, the AC Mains signal always has the peaks clipped:

The 'clean' sinewave (for comparison) was generated by this instrument (note: It too is not currently certified to an NIST-traceable standard, but I have a warm fuzzy feeling it's working okay and would even 'fly' with it):

That thought never entered my mind; everything I've got here indicates a true representation as displayed by the Type 453 O-scope in the video ...

If he would prefer, I think I've got an old Eico or Heathkit that *does* have a dynamic range/compression issue ...

BTW, how does one post an image/still picture (jpg) on the forum? Guess I'll go check the FAQ for that ......

On the Good News front - The Thermaltake TR2 430W PSU is on sale at CompUSA for $10 off regular price (the 'instant rebate' trick) and a further $15 off via mail-in rebate ... so $39.99 will turn into $24.99 (after mail-in rebate and 6 weeks wait) ...

The tin snips (or a chassis nibbler) will be called upon to open up the area where the power switch is on the back of the TR2, I tried it for fit yesterday, to make sure that's all that's needed there.

I'll probably bench test the Dell PSU then...

Braid, properly fluxed, works pretty darn good ... sometimes a little excess flux-core solder that is applied just for the flux content works well too with braid that isn't fluxed ... but not as well when flux itself is applied to otherwise bare braid! Great vids too. ...

Really saggy-looking AC mains sinusoid - the top portion 'clipped' off due to ... extensive use of peak-rectifying power supplies (all kinds of consumer electronics?):

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ozzp4RW5G54

This is the result of being on kind the long-end of a power distribution line -

    - and something that PFC (which draws current during the entire 360 degrees of the AC sinusoid, rather than just during the peak and 'clipping' the incoming AC wave, as peak-detecting or peak-rectifying...

As part of the investigation into this issue, I opened up the Dell OEM PSU that was part of this GX270 and found several swollen caps and one leaker (on top, in the middle of the 'X') ... will probably pick up a Thermaltake TR2 today at Fry's simply because it's available locally and looks like the better choice at Fry's and given the from factor it has to fit into (a Dell GX270).

I probably just pushed something over the edge by booting with the 300 GB Maxtor hooked up and from that point forward it would...

I will be giving all that a try. The only thing I need to rustle up is a different PSU to try ... will post results as they are available ... Thanks for the input.

  • Re: New Members - please post your introductions here

Found this info-packed site as result of Google search while seeking info on a Dell GX270 issue ... and looks like I hit the 'mother lode' of info regarding caps!

Background: A few years ago I spent 3 years working as test engineer at a contract manufacturer; we built a variety of product including product heavy in SMT (including high pin-count BGA and really small QFN packaged parts) running two 'placement' lines with their own reflow ovens ... we saw our share of little problems, including bad 'parts' right...

Got something similar here on GX270 -

Events before final symptoms (final symptoms described below the 3 points I open with here):

    1) W/O a HD attached the GX270 _was_ able to boot to DOS. Did this several times okay ... even actuated the CD ROM drive tray.

    2) Hooked up a 300GB Maxtor, connected AC line, pushed power button and - nada. From this point forward the new symptoms start.

    3) Now even with the HD disconnected the GX270 only flashes the power button when...
