Re: VIZIO P50 HDTV20A Plasma Distortion on Screen
I got the replacement control board. Put it in a the tv works great. The old control board didn't have a major distortion in the test pattern, but there was the same flickering and flashing going on. Thanks to everyone for your expertise and especially attainteddragon. I never would have gotten this far without your help. I have another tv I'll start on in a few days or weeks depending on funds. I picked up 4 tvs including the 50 Vizio for $60 and I was starting to wonder if I shot myself in the foot. It sure is fun when the tv comes...

Re: VIZIO VT420M Power up issue
The reflow per the instructions didn't work. I used an infrared thermometer for control. I guessing the chip is what is bad. I'll be looking for a reasonably priced main board. Although $123 isn't bad for a 1080P HD TV is it?

Re: VIZIO P50 HDTV20A Plasma Distortion on Screen
I checked the connections, they look okay. I also put the old board back in and caused some distortion with the test pattern unlike the replacement board. The dark spot did no go away with the old board.
I've run the test pattern a few more times and I do see flickering and some bright and dim going on. So I made an offer for a control board for $6. I'll try that and see if the test pattern improves. Then try plugging the main board back in, remove the jumper and see what happens.

Re: VIZIO P50 HDTV20A Plasma Distortion on Screen
I think that's the board that has been replaced, picture #7. It was supposed to have been tested. I'm certainly no expert either. Thanks for the input.

Re: VIZIO P50 HDTV20A Plasma Distortion on Screen
You can see the snow in the video. Is that normal?
Although when I compare the test pattern to the first video I posted I certainly don't see any of the same symptoms. There are no lines or blur in the test pattern.

As for the x-main, I could put the other one back in. It didn't make any difference changing any how.

I'll edit a picture to show the jumper set up. From what you told me the test patter must have been okay? It wasn't as clear as I expected it might be.
So the board in this picture is the main board correct....

Re: VIZIO P50 HDTV20A Plasma Distortion on Screen
Okay I found this thread that told me how to jump EXT_AUTO_GEN and get a test pattern.
https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=57818
I took a video of the test. The pattern was snowy and the bright flashing was still there on some patterns although not as bad. Near the end of the video notice the text in the corner of the screen. It is from a local TV station WSBT and it's like it was burned in, for lack of a better description. FYI I can get a good control board on ebay shipped for $6.99....

I see it the EXT_AUTO_GEN. It has 4 pins on it, so I don't want to go poking around without a map. Here is a picture....

This one, I think its called the Z board sometimes.
I'll look auto-ext-gen and see if I can do that diagnostic. It would be very helpful if some one knew that control board. Thanks for your help....

Re: VIZIO P50 HDTV20A Plasma Distortion on Screen
I replaced 12 obviously bad caps. The voltage is 4.56 for 5, 11.1 for 12 and 22.2 for 24. Not as good as I had hoped. The picture is no better either. I've uploaded a video because the issue is hard to describe. The bright and dimming you see is actual and the close ups show the distortion and blur.

Any ideas about where to start and where to junk it?Re: VIZIO P50 HDTV20A Plasma Distort.../> I replaced

Re: VIZIO VT420M Power up issue
I found a process for DIY reflowing here on the forum. Remanufactured main boards for this are $125 plus shipping and no one has replacements in stock. Ebay has none either. $125 is more than the set is worth, so I'll give this a shot. When I heated the underside I only I think it got just hot enough to make it worse. This process will evenly heat top and bottom to a predetermined temp.

Re: VIZIO P50 HDTV20A Plasma Distortion on Screen
I'll phrase it another way. Would low power cause display problems like the ones I described?
If the answer is a definite NO why put money in it right? Thanks.

VIZIO P50 HDTV20A Plasma Distortion on Screen
The set has distortion like the text showing the channel is in a slight zig-zag patter, also an occasional flickering on the entire screen.
There are 12 capacitors bulged on the power supply board and in testing the voltage it was low from 1 -2 volts below what it should be on all but the 24 volt. Could that cause the issues I'm seeing on the screen?
