• Re: Samsung LN52A550P3FX2A, blinking red light in front. No backlight.

so I replaced C102 on the new board, and it worked! I had almost given up on this thing!

thanks everyone for your help!

in case anyone googles this in the future, I replaced the SMD C102 with a 47uF tantalum capacitor. I am not sure why even after replacing C102 on the old main board it still wouldn't fire up. Perhaps the EEPROM was bad on the old board, but good on the new one. If a klutz like me can do this with a 52 inch, anyone can ...

and just for the sake of completeness this is what I see when I plug it in. Its a crapshoot between a normal image, a solid aquamarine, and a nasty glitched out screen before it shuts off and turns back on again. Its a big improvement over not turning on at all before. I already changed all of the power board caps and double checked that the new ones arent bulging.

I really want to avoid removing and replacing anything on the brand new board, but it looks like thats the only option I have left....

So here's an update.

I received the new main board in the mail, swapped it out, double checked all connections and now I get a loud squealing out of the speakers and the occasional samsung startup noise before it shuts down. It does this repeatedly with no image. Going to poke around a bit, but at least I am getting something apart from just clicking on this set.

Ideas? Does the squealing and startup 'jingle' provide any clue as to what it might be?

Yes, unfortunately the clicking is still there

I did check for an image when the backlights came on and there wasn't any, simply the glow from the light. Those moments when the backlights werent on, I also shined a flashlight into the screen to see if there was an image in there somewhere and that also didn't produce any results.

I think I'm just going to wait for that main board to arrive. This is way too much time to invest on this project at this point.Re: Samsung LN52A550P3FX2A,

if you are referring to the tiny connections between the upper half and the bottom half then its labels are

GND
FB
VCC(+12V)
PROT
LOOP2
LOOP1
PROT1_1

thanks for clearing up the inverter/balancer nomenclature. One step closer to knowing what the heck is wrong with this thing and how I can get a shiny new 52 inch to watch tv on....

regarding this post, should I hold one lead in the first arrow then use the second lead to test the other arrows sequentially? The first pair of errors gave me an OL signal as much as I tried to wiggle them and make good contact. The second pair of arrows gave me 2 ohms.

I tested the cables joining the two halves and the continuity is there for both left and right sides...

PROT1_1 reads 0.027V, but quickly jumps to 11.26V when it clicks and the backlights come on, only to quickly fall back down to 0.027V

VCC(+12V) reads 12.08V

EDIT:will check the transformers being connected in series after some dinner. This troubleshooting is exhausting Re: Samsung LN52A550P3FX2A, blinking red light in front. No backlight.

The ribbon cable runs to what looks like another inverter on the opposite side of the tv set as seen in picture 1. It runs along the bottom of the tv.

The model of the power board is BN61-03012A #6 DH06 as written.

I attached other pictures. It looks like the inverter model numbers are SSB520H24V01 REV0.3 I had to disconnect two cables to see the model number but I reconnected them afterward.

The transformers seem to have the number 388R B0829...

So in the previous 2 posts I put the resistors in individually while keeping the other cable plugged in. This time I put the resistors in both cables at the same time. I got a backlight after the initial click that lasted roughly 3 seconds then it clicked off and did not return. When I unplug and wait 10 seconds to plug it back in again, the same thing happens.

Can a backlight be bad, even if it comes on for a few seconds?

I attached a pic of the light I saw shining through the...

I ordered a main board. I just don't have the time or patience or remove and install a new component that might or might not work. If the main board doesnt work, this thing is going into a landfill. I will update the thread once I receive and install the new main board so people googling in the future can get a sense of what I did.

Thanks for taking the time to help me out, everyone

I used a tantalum capacitor like the one pictured here:

I made sure I put it in the right way

I went to three separate electronics stores and just couldn't find the tiny SMD caps. Why is it so hard to find those outside of the internet?

Did I screw up by using a tantalum cap? ...

steady 4.98V throughout on INV ON/OFF, except for when it clicks on and it makes a brief jump to 5.00V

AHA. After connecting the 1.5kohm resistor to INVERTER ON/OFF and DET_5V the backlight came on for 5 seconds then a *click* and the backlight went off for approximately 15 seconds.... then it came back on for 5 seconds... then off, and on and off and on.

It doesn't stay on solidly, but it's good to know that the backlight at least works.

I hope this sheds some light on what direction I can take on the repair. Thanks!...

ok I put back the 1.5kohm resistor and here are the results I got from each connection with the 1.5kohm resistor in place and the TV plugged in:

CN801
PSON...............3.75V
SYNC...............0
STB.................5.17V
13.0Vs.............13.31V
5.1V.................5.1V
13.0Vm.............13.21V

CN1805
INV ON/OFF.......0.001V
PWM DM...........0V
DET_5V.............5.17V

CN1806
FB...................0V...

I'm a dolt. The resistor in that picture is actually 1.5kohm, not 15.

anyway, I tried a 15 ohm resistor in the same configuration and I still didn't get a backlight.

So I tried what you suggested with a 15kohm resistor and the backlight still didnt come on. I did notice a very faint squeaking coming from the 'HOT' side of the power board that I normally don't get. I made sure the resistor made good contact with the connector and even tried to unplug and replug the power back in. No success. What does this tell me about what steps I should take next?

Thanks again, without help I would be totally lost.Re: Samsung LN52A550P3FX2A, blinking red...

dragon, I have tried disconnecting the main from the power supply and the backlights do not come on. How would I use the 1k resistors, exactly?

so I replaced C102 on the main logic board and the television still does the same red blinking and clicking on the power board. When I try to power it on with the remote, the red blight strobes/blinks rapidly as if it knows im pushing the buttons, but I still have a complete lack of backlight. Could use some more suggestions.

so I tested a connection called CN1805 that goes from the power board to the main board with readings as follows:

INVERTER ON/OFF...................0.038V
NC.......................................0V
PWM DIM..............................0.425V
GND.....................................--
DET_5V.................................5.13V

is that voltage way too small for the INVERTER ON/OFF signal? I have no idea what it should be. Thanks again to...

I took the voltage readings for that whole connector. The readings are as follows:

13.0Vm.........................13.15V
13.0Vs..........................13.57V
