Re: Proview pl713s -newbie in distress
To the left of the bad U101 mosfet is just a dab of burnt flux. So where do I get the replacement part for the U101?

I turned it on again and the smoke comes from all the joints on the bottom of the board. Any ideas?

Re: Proview pl713s -newbie in distress
Guys I did it but there were sparks and smoke! I saw the LCD turn on and then I saw sparks where the power button is and then smoke from the MB. The LCD never shutdown and was still on so I unplugged it.
I looked over my work and found on questionable joint. This joint was kinda mixed into the neighboring solder so I sucked out the solder. I think the solder that I took was used as a wire on the MB and I took too much out. You can see a white line where the solder used to be. Take a look at the pic....

Re: Proview pl713s -newbie in distress
Thanks got all the caps I need. So excited. (:
So how do you know which caps are motherboard grade? Can you give me a list of brands with the series (such as Panasonic FC) so next time I need caps I can just go down the list?

Re: Proview pl713s -newbie in distress
Hi guys I know this thread is kinda old but i found some time to continue this project.
So I looked on digikey and the dont have any panasonic fm/fc 150uf @ 25v caps. What do I do?
Also should I replace the big cap? And what about the tiny caps on the 2nd board of this monitor?Last edited by lasttarget; 12-28-2010, 05:51 PM.

Proview pl713s -newbie in distress
Hi guys! Glad to have found such a wide community of experts online. I have a couple questions.
The monitor is a Proview pl713s. Its old and I don't really intend to use it but thought it would be fun to fix. Its completely dead, no screen, no power light. I can see bad caps on the board. I also see parts of the board that are discolored near the yellow boxes I believe are called fets.
My question is how do I order the capacitors needed? Digikey seems really complicated and I don't know how to order caps. Badcaps unfortunately doesnt have the caps I need. Do I need...

Re: how to reflow laptop graphic chip
Heat gun is not the way to go. If you want to do it right you have to reball. There is no other way than to reball for a permanent fix. The problem is that the solder balls used are lead free and although they have a higher melting point then lead solder, they are more susceptible to cracking under heat strain. You must reball with lead solder balls. A heat gun will probably popcorn the chip and you will have a graphics error again in the near future.
Doing it professionally cost a lot for the equipment alone.
