Re: Acer Spin 5 - Turns on and off after a few seconds
In fact the problem returned. I'm waiting for the ICs from Ali to replace it.

Re: Acer Spin 5 - Turns on and off after a few seconds
It's not the RAM, cause right now it is on Windows login screen, with the power/card reader daughter board disconnected. So the problem is isolated to this board.
Every time I connect the board it turns on and off after two seconds. Every time I power the laptop on by shorting the pwr + ground on the main board (with the daughter board disconnected) it powers on fine.
Let me attach a few photos.
EDIT: So far I've tested the power button by ensuring there is no continuity when not being...Last edited by DanFen; 08-21-2022, 04:32 AM.

Re: Acer Spin 5 - Turns on and off after a few seconds
I got a new board and the same problem occurred. Reaches the POST, brings up the logo, and shuts off. After installing the new mobo the system worked for a minute and was able to boot to Windows and shut it down, before connecting everything else. I wonder if it's the battery or the Power Board that's causing this.
EDIT: Yep, it powered on by shorting the power button pins on the connector of the power board.Last edited by DanFen; 08-21-2022, 03:38 AM.

Re: Acer Spin 5 - Turns on and off after a few seconds
The voltage regulator also seems to be slightly warm, but not hot. I can't check the schematics properly, because the schematics I have seem to have a dedicated regulator IC for 3V and 5V separately. The board I have seems to have one for both. The capacitors around the IC seem to have very low impedance (92 ohms - probably low impedance is the wrong term at this reading), resulting in beeping when checked in continuity mode. Not sure if this is expected or not.
Edit: During the original issue, when the system powers...Last edited by DanFen; 08-07-2022, 03:04 PM.

Re: Acer Spin 5 - Turns on and off after a few seconds
Another point that's worth mentioning is, that if the battery is plugged in, the system powers on automatically when the DC/adapter is plugged in. This does not happen if the battery is disconnected.Last edited by DanFen; 08-07-2022, 02:06 PM.

Re: Acer Spin 5 - Turns on and off after a few seconds
I honestly can't tell cause the board is not too big and my hand was all over the place, I was just holding the board in place in the chassis.
I can give it another shot, but it's quite random. Can't see any pattern of when it switches off in seconds vs when it stays on.
EDIT: I just powered it on now, inside the chassis (not screwed in place). It stayed on with the cooling fan on (seems like high fan spin to me). CPU is warm but not hot. Coils around it are quite warm (almost hot, but not too bad)....Last edited by DanFen; 08-07-2022, 08:16 AM.

Re: Acer Spin 5 - Turns on and off after a few seconds
So just received the replacements. The measurement between the S and D out of circuit is the same. The measurement of the new mosfet is also the same out of circuit, so I am not sure if it has anything to do with the fault :/
I went ahead to measure between the S and D of the other mosfet (PU4301) and it has the same reading. This means, my original reading of PU4301 in one of the earlier posts... was wrong. I replaced PU4401 anyway, and will give it a shot. I've ordered some other components that are in the power/charging...Last edited by DanFen; 08-04-2022, 06:37 AM.

Re: Troubleshooting Uni-T EEPROM ErrE
Reflowed the resistors, still the same. While it seems to be interesting, I don't think it's worth working on it anymore. The only thing I miss about this is that it has auto range, and the other ones I have do not.

Re: Troubleshooting Uni-T EEPROM ErrE
Doesn't seem to be the case, must be the quality of the previous photo
I'm still to re-flow the resistors around the EEPROM area....

Re: Troubleshooting Uni-T EEPROM ErrE
Thanks for checking!
All resistors seem to be soldered fine, but I'll re-flow them just in case. I also measured them and the readings are good.
About the solder balls, do you mean in between pins? If so, it doesn't seem like it under the microscope, and I didn't reflow it or touch it in any way.
I also tested in continuity between the DTM0660 and the EEPROM IC, in case there's a broken trace, but all seems fine....

Will tryIs that done with the EEPROM back in circuit?...

This is the backup (the one I had before I wrote the shared one)....

Re: Troubleshooting Uni-T EEPROM ErrE
I know it's been a while, but I just got to do this now. Wrote the shared bin to the IC, re-soldered it back, and still getting the same error :/
I also de-soldered the IC and read it again just to make sure that it got programmed correctly. Then compared it to the shared hex and they are the same... which concludes that the programming was fine.Last edited by DanFen; 07-16-2022, 02:51 PM.

Re: Acer Spin 5 - Turns on and off after a few seconds
The power button on this laptop is not on the keyboard, but a dedicated board. It has the power button, power and charging LEDs, a card reader, and two other buttons. It's connected to the mainboard with a flex cable. It's quite a wide flex cable.

Re: Acer Spin 5 - Turns on and off after a few seconds
Something odd happens when the battery is connected now. The system turns on with high fan spin, but no display still. The battery is also not charging. PU4402 drain starts at 12V and drops to 0.83.
Another thing I noticed while poking the probes around and trying to analyse measurements (voltages), is that there is voltage anywhere I could check other than at PG4707 & PL4801.
PR4802 is 2.49V (I thought this should be 5V?).Last edited by DanFen; 07-11-2022, 05:20 AM.
