Re: iPhone backlight circuit operation question
I must've been editing my previous comment whenever you responded, but check that link. It looks fairly similar to the iPhone's backlight circuit. Looks like it has something to do with Electromagnetic interference?
Oh, and this may be off topic but sometimes after I replace a screen on an iphone, the backlight flickers, even if I unplug it and plug it back in. But it always subsides over a few hours. Not sure if that has anything to do with EMI. It has happened maybe 5 or 6 times out of about 400 scree...

Re: iPhone backlight circuit operation question
From what I've seen, there are dual circuits only in the Plus models, probably due to the larger screen.
Could this have anything to do with having two coils?:...Last edited by Hellfiya; 04-06-2017, 03:36 PM.

Re: Looking to buy my first hot air station.
I didn't read the entire thread but I would like to state that I've been using a xtronic hot air station for at least 3 years and it's still running great. It is super noisy why higher than 50% but it was incredibly cheap. I think I paid $70 for it. I use it almost daily for iPhone board repairs and other random things like heating up labels from packages so I can reuse a box without making it look like it was delivered before :p

Re: What oscilloscope to buy?
The Siglent SDS1202X-E 200MHz looks like it's a great entry level scope and for only $379USD. It should be released for sale sometime this month. There is a video on YouTube by eevblog who does a tear down and it has a great build quality.

Re: Ps3 dvd drive problem
Try adjusting the gears that help move the center circle thing up and down. It doesn't look like it was moving at all in your video, when it should.

Re: Problem Cleaning / Removing Old Solder from Board
You should first clean the area with high % alcohol, then add flux and fresh solder. Those components are much easier to remove with a hot air station.
I have a hot air rework station, and whenever my iron is melting any solder too slowly, I blow the area with hot air around 240C. Everything solder joint my iron touches melts like butter. Perhaps you could use a blow dryer or heat gun(6 inches away on low) if the other suggestions fail. I would also recommend buying low melt solder so you can blend it with the old...Last edited by Hellfiya; 04-03-2017, 12:30 PM.

Re: Help! need to solder the wire to the TAB!
You may want to put some UV curable solder mask over that area when the connections are repaired. I usually use it on my iPhone board repairs when i'm running micro jumpers(it keeps everything in place and prevents shorts) but it may work well in this application as well....Last edited by Hellfiya; 04-03-2017, 12:07 PM.

Through-hole DIODE replacement question
Hello,
I had been repairing a nice old Marshall amplifier that I received for free. The thing would sound fine for a few minutes then all the sudden it's like everything maxes out and makes the loudest noise imaginable. I found that one of the large resistors had burnt out and a paired set of voltage regulators would get incredibly hot.
On the same line there were 3 out of 6 zener diodes that are rated at .5w(halfwatt) and 5.6v but were reading around 7.1v-7.4v.
Am I able to use 1w rated diodes to replace them or do I need to use .5w?

Re: TV SMD Cap question
Nevermind, disregard the last post. I have confirmed with the owner that the backlight has always been like that. Guess I will just leave off the caps since it works fine.

Re: TV SMD Cap question
Actually, after watching it for a bit, I did notice that the blacklight may be off at the 1/3 and 2/3 position of the screen(horizontally and vertically). It's not noticeable unless viewed at an angle greater than about 45 degrees. From a direct view, it looks completely normal. I'm not sure if it had always been like this or if the missing caps is causing it.

TV SMD Cap question
So I had a friend bring in a 55" Westinghouse TV(Model: DWM55F1G1) with no picture but it had blacklight and audio. I first checked out the T-Conn board, which everything appeared ok, so after I tried doing the half display test. I plugged in one side to the tconn board and sure enough, one side would display output. I plugged in the other side and nothing.
I checked the board that was soldered to the display panel and found a short in a line and two bad caps(One was shorted, but the other had some black dots on it. I removed them both and the short was gone, and both sides...
