Re: Abit KX7-333
Nope. Why? Because I don't have another motherboard with an AGP slot except for an even older ASUS P2B, which only has an AGP 1x/2x slot.
The next (newer) motherboard than this Abit KX7-333 is the one in my Dell Inspiron XPS Gen 2 laptop - which has a custom PCI-Express slot for the GeForce Go 7800 GTX card that's in there now. This Abit MB is the last AGP MB I have....

Re: Abit KX7-333
Bigger cooler, copper base, bigger fan, what's not to like?
The fact that the system STILL refuses to POST with the Radeon X700 Pro installed. It's definitely not a cap problem, boys. NO beep codes at all. If I pull the card out, it gives me a "no VGA" beep code. Put the 9550xl back in, boots just fine. I even went into the BIOS to disable AGP Fast Write and change the memory size or whatever it was from 64M to 256M and still nothing. I had to end up clearing CMOS to get the thing to boot correctly again, but I got...

Re: Abit KX7-333
Got the MB back today - looks cherry. I got everything put back in place except the CPU cooler - I'm getting a new one with a Copper base and possibly bigger fan to go on the newer Barton core. This new cooler has three hole attachments on each side of the CPU socket, not the single hole kind on the old CPU. I'm sure either will work, but peace of mind.
I also got my two new 16MB EDO RAM sticks in today, so now my Windows 95 retro system has a full 64MB (4x16MB) of memory instead of 40MB (2x4MB + 2x16MB). Now I have to figure out how to sell these...

That's ok. I can put the old BIOS back on once I get it back....

Re: Abit KX7-333
No, what I meant by "trouble" was I had to find the BIOS firmware, then I had to go back and FIND the Flash utility for it because I couldn't flash the BIOS without it... get them both put on a FLOPPY drive (which this system doesn't even have normally), find a working/compatible FLOPPY drive cable....make sure the drive was hooked up properly (cable not installed upside-down and stuff), re-enable Floppy support in the BIOS (because I disable floppy support on computers that don't actually have a floppy drive), make sure my Windows 98 startup...Last edited by FFXIhealer; 02-05-2017, 07:20 PM.

Re: Abit KX7-333
Did you....reflash my BIOS? LOL After all the time I took trying to re-flash it myself months ago! >.<
Guess a guy's gotta try to badge his work somehow. But I'm the guy that takes off car dealership badges if I buy a car.
When it had the Palomino in it, it said
Main Processor: AMD Athlon XP (tm) 1800+ 1531 MHz
But I've booted that Barton core into Windows XP and it says it's an Athlon XP 3000+ in the System Properties window, so I couldn't give two shits if the BIOS doesn't see an exact model number. Windows...Last edited by FFXIhealer; 02-05-2017, 05:09 PM.

Re: Abit KX7-333
LOL I'm just jokin', bro. I'm sure everyone else knows you're more professional than that.
Hey, it's what was affordable to me back in 2002. I still have the original Athlon XP 1800+ Palomino sitting on my shelf and EVERY SINGLE PIN is ram-rod straight. Not like the Barton that's in that board right now. I got that off of E-bay and I had to straighten a good number of pins before I could "coax" it into that 482 Socket. That's why I also didn't want to take it back out. I also hate that it's AGP 4x...I wish it was...

Re: Abit KX7-333
So...yeah. He got the MB today and told me something to the effect of: Yeah...your sh**'s f***ed up, mate. And I'm like: What up, bro? Sh** worked when I sent it to you! Fix that sh** and send me the bill!
Ok, so maybe he didn't use any bad words...but yeah. LOL

Re: Abit KX7-333
MB shipped out today with the caps - well packaged with the instructions manual too. LOL Here's hoping that the end of February brings to me some solid retro gaming.

Re: Abit KX7-333
I'll answer that with a full UPDATE.
Received my new caps order today - found out that two of the caps I ordered have a larger diameter than the caps they're to replace, so now I have to adjust fire.
I attempted to de-solder the first of the tall 2200uF caps near the CPU....with a 20-watt Radio Shack iron and a 45-watt Radio Shack iron from the 80s or something. Neither one would melt the solder joint of the first wire, so I'm calling a halt to trying to do this myself. I just sent an e-mail to the admin guy here asking if I can still...

Re: Abit KX7-333
New Barton CPU works like a charm after I straightened out the crooked pins.
Wanna know what DOESN'T work? The X700 Pro. The system refuses to POST with it in there - not even a beep code. Just running fans and HDD whine (the HDD spins up, of course).

Re: Abit KX7-333
Well, I ordered a nearly-complete cap set for this MB. I left out the caps below 1000uF after talking about it with the guy over e-mail. I will be attempting this job myself. I'm crossing my fingers that I don't screw anything up. I have a 20-watt soldering iron and one of those 45+ watt ones. I think I might have a sucky-pump thing somewhere.

Re: Abit KX7-333
Well, some additional info...
The motherboard was bought some time around the 2002 year and it was used until around 2005, when I joined the military and moved out. The PC then sat on a desk/shelf for years.
It wasn't until later in 2016 that I pulled it off the shelf and began messing around with it again. I put the system back in its original case and it did power on. Only now instead of 2 x 256MB DDR-266 sticks....it has 2 x 1GB DDR-400 sticks (which really did smooth out performance with Windows XP SP3).
The board...

Re: Abit KX7-333
Thank you for those links. They work. I've sent off for a quote. If the price is right, I don't mind providing a little business his way to get a professional job done. I'm comfortable soldering guitar parts together, but I really don't like the idea of accidentally messing up my PCB when I have a CPU and a video card coming in. And the site says he warranties his cap jobs for 2 years, so that's not bad either....

Re: Abit KX7-333
I'm tempted to just send it in to be done by this guy, even though I am fully capable of doing the work myself, I only have a Radio Shack soldering iron, no workbench, etc. And I'd want all the caps replaced anyway and there's a good 48 caps. How to you get a-hold of this guy to do the work anyway? His Contact page gives a 404 error.

Re: New Members - please post your introductions here
/facepalm I have to introduce myself first?
Hi.
I'm an IT guy and I'm no stranger to soldering. Just wanted to get a kit together for a job, but I can't...because forum restrictions...
Motherboard is Abit KX7-333 (NOT the Raid version), AMD Athlon XP (Socket 462), DDR-400, yadda-yadda. MB still works, but leaking and bulging caps bothers me. I have hi-resolution photos with details....but again....forum restrictions...
